Fabulous interview. Marty’s voice has that same comforting quality I’ve always loved, reminiscent of Jon Miller’s voice. Terrific historical commentary and truly interesting. I grew up in the 50s and 60s. I remember Selma, and racial tensions in full swing. Willie WAS tough. And truly an all star. What a time that was. ❤ Have a wonderful vacation Damon

In passing, Willie Mays is bringing back fond memories - connecting a generation of fathers & sons. My dad took me a Giants game at Candlestick Park in the 60's as a little boy - still remember the chill of the Bay Area climate, the awe of entering the stadium, holding dad's hand going to our seat on the first base side lower deck, and the announcer calling out Willie Mays name at bat.

"The definition of happiness is the full use of your powers, along the lines of excellence." John F. Kennedy. Willie Mays played baseball exuding happiness. He pursued excellence in every facet of the game. In the field, he meticulously prepared his body and mind. Kept in tip top shape, honed his swing with endless batting practice, drilled his throwing and fielding and base running into graceful efficiency. He studied film, kept detailed records on opponents in his head, studied other team's preparation in warmups before games to suss out others exploitable weaknesses. He eagerly shared his knowledge to strengthen the team, always encouraging excellence in others. I'm sure he kept the team loose, too, not putting himself above anyone else. Over a ten year span, he played in over 97% of his team's games, and did it with a smile. Off the field, he was gracious to fans and was an ambassador to the team, the cities he played, and the sport. He taught kids how to play, he helped kids get an education, he worked to provide opportunities for them to play. He won the Roberto Clemente Award for his work. He did it all with joy, showmanship and happiness from the satisfaction of knowing, at the end of the game, his career and his life, he did it with excellence, at the full envelope of his power, and left nothing on the table. He had it all, by giving it all away. RIP, Willie Mays, #24, excellence personified.

Willie remained tremendously popular in New York long after the Giants left. When he came to the Mets, he always got a great ovation whenever his name was announced.

I would like to tell a true story about Willie Mays. I would like the readers to make up their own minds about this account. During the early 1960's I had an aunt that was dating Willie Mays. My Aunt and Grandmother and cousin were coming from New York to live with us in San Jose. They flew into SFO airport. Willie Mays came to the airport to greet my aunt. Willie Mays drove his Cadillac to airport. I was awestruck because the trunk of the Cadillac opened remotely. That was a big thing in the early 60's. Willie Mays came to our home a few times to visit my aunt and a couple of more times for a date. The first time he came over he brought his son Michael. I can remember Michael Mays showing me and my sister a new watch that Willie had bought him. Things with Willie was always cordial with my parents. On one when visit my Dad asked Willie Mays why he wasn't at spring training. Willie replied that spring training was for the "regular players." Suffice it to say we didn't see much of Willie Mays anymore.

Great idea , Damon, Marty is the perfect spokes person for Willy Mays. There will be 1000 people at his service, a who’s who of baseball, Barry Bonds and Dusty Baker will be 2 of his pallbearers if I had to guess.
