Bob Uecker was one of the worst players in MLB history. He knew this, so he then decided to transition into becoming the funniest man in all of baseball (and maybe in the history of sports)...

I did get him of laugh one time at the baseball writers dinner. I got to go with my Dads friends when I was in college to the 67 and 68. Met Gibby, Lou Brock, and Curt Flood, People had a chance to go up to the head table and shake hands and say hello. That season Harry Caray was still the announcer for the Cardinals but he was in the hospital after breaking his leg when a car hit him after he left the Chase Park Plaza. For the whole season Harry kept talking about his purple martin birds and the bird house he erected in the yard to kill mosquitoes. When games were slow Jack Buck who did color commentary would get Harry going about his birds and he could go on for several innings about them. So I pocketed two leg bones from the cornish hens they served for dinner and pulled them out to give to Gibby , Brock, and Flood saying as I did so " I really miss not having Harry here, please give him these and tell him I wish that he was here because his purple martins were delicious. That should get him out of bed. All three of them started laughing. Later the three of them were standing behind me as we waited for valet parking and one of them said that I was a funny kid and they would be sure to tell Harry;

Watched them many times in the early 60's. Remember getting tickets for an epic game pitting Gibson against Koufax, I'm the only Dodger fan in a family of Cardinal rooters. So this could be bad for me either way. Koufax got knocked out in the third inning and i was taking a lot of heat. Then Gibson got yanked one inning later. Dodgers won in 10 inning 8-7 on Norm Larker's single and the ride home was very, very uiet

If I had to build a Rushmore of baseball announcers, there are three voices that are guaranteed and a fourth that could be one of many (depending on the day). The three that I would definitely enshrine are Dave Niehuas (original voice of the Seattle Mariners), the incomparable Vin Scully, and Bob Uecker. They were all special to the audiences that heard them during the years. Bob was one of the reasons I wanted to get into broadcasting (haven't tried it yet) because he was such a character that I felt confident being myself on the air. Thank you for giving Bob Uecker the spotlight he deserves, and great content as always.

You briefly showed a photo of Uecker with what looks like a tuba. That is exactly what it was and there is a great story behind it. It happened at the 1964 World Series when on the last day of the season the Cardinals won their last game as the Phillies who once led them by 18 or so games went on a monumental losing streak and lost their last game of their season giving the National League Pennant to the Cards.. St. Louis faced the New York Yankees. On the morning of one game the Yankees and Cardinals were out taking batting practice before the game. There was a marching band there that was going to play the National Anthem and also entertain at 7th inning stretch time. The Yankees had finished practice and were in the dugout and the Cardinals took the field to practice when Uecker grabs a tuba and goes out into the outfield and starts catching fungoes with the tuba, beating it all to hell. Both the Cardinals and the Yankees watching him were in hysterics until someone came out and took the tuba away. Though Uecker was only a reserve catcher and came later in the season, the team voted him a full share of the World Series money of $4500.00 or so minus the cost of repairing the tuba which came to two or three hundred dollars. Lord, that was 60 years ago and I still remember Ueck in a Cardinal uniform. I was a sophomore in high school then and I am 74 today.

Bob isn't just a treasure to Milwaukee, he's a treasure to Wisconsin. What makes his humor though so great, unlike Rodney Dangerfield (a great self deprecating comedian himself), Bob's self deprecating humor had more elaborate setups that took more time, and just when you least expect it, the punchline comes in when you think his stories couldn't get anymore worse or tragic XD! I love his joke on his dad and him struggled to throw an NFL style football, it was going so horrible, until a nice enough neighbor came over and put some air in the ball! Which leads me to another point about him, he's not just a treasure to Milwaukee, or WI, he's a treasure to baseball. He's so beloved in the world of baseball that when he was inducted into the HoF with the Ford C Frick award, he became the only non-player inductee ever to be allowed into a special club room for hall of fame players only while in Cooperstown. He's one of very few persons that can make even the most fun-sucking, no-nonsense, meanest S.O.B.S tear up from laughter, and it takes a special talent to do that! If you don't like Bob Uecker, there is something WRONG with you! There is not a hateful bone in his body, the man is so beloved that he can connect to any generation, and that also takes a special kind of human, because Bob is that special of a human being. Uecker loves WI and Baseball, and in turn, we loved him back, all deserving.

I remember a beer commercial when I was a kid featuring Ron Cey and Bob Uecker Cey was talking about how amazied he was that he could take one of his baseball cards and get a case of beer then Uecker walks in with one of his baseball cards and says hey Ace give me a couple of cases of beer and you can have this baby one of his baseball cards the bartender says no then Uecker says okay one case the bartender says dream on then Uecker says half a can? It was hilarious and I always thought it was interesting that somebody could make fun of themselves and be okay with it I guess a true comedian can do something like that

Whenever I see a video or picture of him, my heart jumps into my throat and I think "Oh god, he died and people are doing retrospectives."

Nothing like Norm Macdonald stories about Bob Uecker he was absolutely filthy every time he sees a good looking lady in the stands he would hit the cough button and say really filthy things about her and then goes right back to announcing the game. He hits the cough button and goes like I sure would like to get with that tulips over there and then here’s a ground ball to second

Ueck had the voice and even did all those commercials with Bud Light and even did a TV series called Mr. Belvedere for 6 years from 85 to 90 WHILE doing Brewers games at the same time. We all know him from Major League, but remember he was in his mid 50's when that came out and now he's 90 now. That's a long time he's been working and still doing these games. He's either going to die on the job like Harry Kalas, retire like Vin Scully, or hopefully just die peacefully in his sleep. Just be happy we even have him now after all these years.
