Doobie Brothers Quadio Review - The Quadraphonic recordings of the Doobie Brothers brought back to life with the Rhino Quadio box set. Albums 2-5 from the Doobie Brothers released originally between 1972-1975 as Quadro disc CD-4 LPs are not available on Blu Ray audio with DTS-HD Master Audio encoding. The experience is amazing and has made me a fan of the Doobie Brothers.

So great to hear from someone who was able to experience Quadraphonics from the beginning. While I was aware of the technology back then, we didn’t have it. Instead, dad had a Dynaco Quadapter which simulated a form of 4-channel sound. Not the same. You had some serious gear to fully experience. It would be neat to compare against the modern playback I am using. Thanks so much for sharing. -Jon

John, a few important points about the comments you made about quad, back when these albums were first issued. First, the CD-4 system, used by Warner Brothers for their quad releases. Warner was all set to release their quad records, using the QS matrix system, until Brad Miller, of Mobile Fidelity, threatened to pull his titles from their catalog, if they went with a matrix format. Warner caved, and decided to go with CD-4 instead, to placate Miller. Miller still pulled his titles from WB, to start his own label, Soundbird Records. The CD-4 format was very finicky; it required a special cartridge, on the turntable, which could reproduce the frequencies needed for the carriers that contained the difference signals for the demodulator to split rear from front. The cartridge had to be perfectly aligned in the tonearm, and the cables, from cartridge to demodulator had to be very low capacitance. All told, the format should have worked better than it did. Had WB stuck to their guns and used QS, no special cartridge would have been needed. Any stereo cartridge could do the job. The matrix decoders back then were still works in progress. Even though very few quad records are being produced today, many people, like myself, have extensive collections of both SQ and QS records. We still like to play them. An Australian company, Involve Audio, has produced a decoder that can properly decode both SQ and QS, with separation as good as most discrete systems, that can be added onto any system that offers multichannel analog inputs. It's worth looking into, and the decoder is less expensive than the best separate QS and SQ decoders of the 70's era. I concur, 100%, with your evaluation of the Doobies; Quadio box set. Rhino has, since, released four more albums in Quadio, from Black Sabbath, Jefferson Starship, J. Geils Band, and Alice Cooper. They all sound quite amazing. All are the original quad mixes, as appeared on the LP's. Rhino have also announced there will be more, presumably later this year. And, unlike the Doobies' set, they're using Dolby Atmos, for those people whose systems have that capability. For those who don't, they'll fold down to 5.1 quite well. By the way, the four albums I mentioned above are also Atmos! They'll fold down to 4.0, if that's what you want, with absolutely nothing lost.

Amazing information you shared. I got behind on my responses and this one deserves a reply. Sorry for the delay. I like knowing the history and I did not know the details you supplied hear - very interesting - especially how the record company was forced into the more challenging technology. I hadn’t checked to see if more releases in Quad are available or coming and this news is exciting to me. While I am an Atmos fan, I like hearing these original mixes. It is a different experience and places you in the band vs. the audiences. I love it when I am nearly frightened by voices coming out of nowhere. Thanks again. -Jon

I downloaded the Doobies quadios and got an interesting effect. I do not have a four channel system, just stereo, so only two channels are heard. A fascinating unintended alternate mix. And the clarity of sound is crisp and phenomenal. A totally different experience with albums I am very familiar with. Love them!

Don - thanks for sharing. Feeding to just two channel isn’t something I had tried but will giving your report. I can imagine as I know how discrete and clear the mix is. Very unique. -Jon

I was late to the game, but purchased Chicago Box and Doobie Brothers Box. Listening was an exciting and thrilling experience. Quickly purchased the Quadio Bundle from Rhino as well as preordered Richard Wright's Wet Dream. (Notice some items were sold out in 30 days!) I'm glad you pointed out that having a blu ray player and 5.1 theatre system will work fine. I had to turn off the LFB. There were so many desirable Quad 4.0 produced in the 70's, so I'm hoping that Rhino able to bring us Bowie, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin (just to mention a few). One last thing, hopefully, Rhino will print "sold out" items--they were not limited editions (as far as I know). =)

Glad you weighed in - never too late. I like your “exciting and thrilling experience” - I feel the same. I didn’t know about the new Richard Wright release - that might be a good choice as well. Thanks for sharing. -Jon

Greetings Sir. Kinda off the subject but I’ve been looking at yours videos and have a question. I’m currently in the market for a multi channel A/V processor and actually have a Anthem AVM 70 on order but nobody knows when they will ship. I went to my local high end audio store and was looking at the new Macintosh AV processors and the salesman told me he would drop $2000 off the price of the MX 123 if I bought one of their amps to go with it. Should I stay with the Anthem or get the Macintosh ? Normally the Mac runs $8000 now 6000. Thank you for your very informative videos. My best Dan

Daniel, thanks for watching. It is certainly not an easy time to purchase a processor. Since my series of reviews my impression of Anthem has gone down and that of McIntosh MX123has risen. Which is better - tough call. The McIntosh may be the safer but more expensive choice if you are okay with not supporting front wide speakers with its 7.2.6 configuration. Both are still respectable. I would hope that the MciIntosh would sound better but they don’t publish all the expected specifications and a few they do publish are not market leading. Without direct comparison it is hard to say. Personally I would be prouder to own the McIntosh and would more likely retain it for years longer even it not in my main system due to its build quality and classic styling. The Anthem display I found appealing in their marketing resources but photos/videos in reviews reveal an imperfect implementation. I recall each are missing a sound format - the MX123 may not support DTS:x Pro and the Anthem seems to be lacking Auro3D support. The Anthem ARC calibration is said to be superior to the Audyssey solution within the Marantz based MX123. Neither may have HDMI 2.1 support yet - but not critical today for most non gamers but rather a comforting capability for those who like to be future ready. I am one not to trust that hardware / software upgrades will arrive on time. I have decided to hold off until supply chain and HDMI issues are resolved. My guess is that things will begin to flow this Fall. While my guidance is not that decisive, that is hopefully a few details that will be helpful. Best of luck - either way you will have a really nice processor. It would be good to hear more as come to a decision.-Jon
