I never managed to read the novels by G.R.R. Martin, but I love the world of ice and fire, so for me it is really amazing having the whole history of house targaryen summarized in a documentation. Thanks a lot for the hard work!

Fact check: Rhaenyra was pregnant with her *sixth* child when she received the news of Aegon's usurpation. By this time she already had five sons: Jacaerys, Lucerys, Joffrey, Aegon, and Viserys; the child she miscarried was her daughter Visenya. Edit: Also, Queen Helaena was Queen Dowager Alicent's daughter, not her daughter-in-law.

Rhaenys and Viserys weren't brother and sister. They were cousins. Rhaenys was the first born child of King Jaeherys' third born son Aemon and Viserys was the first born of Jaeherys' 4th born son Baelon whom both were heir apparent before dying before Jaeherys. Rhaenys' line technically had the stronger claim being the first born of an elder son, but since she was female, the great counsel of 101 AC chose Viserys over Rhaenys and her son Leanor due to Viserys being the closest living male relative. They were the only 3 potential claimants to be seriously considered out of roughly a dozen potential heirs. That story is a very important precursor to the Dance of the Dragons.

Seems strange to completely skip over the reign of Maegor the Cruel.

I’ve been waiting for a K&G documentary on the Dance of the Dragons for years….

So in terms of military units, the Dragons are not as all powerful as I once thought. In terms of dragons against armies, the dragons need to be supported from the ground by infantry, as while devastating they are vulnerable to ranged weaponry (crossbows and Scorpions notably). Myraxes shows this, as even during the Conquering a single dragon is defeatable. You can get away with just dragons though, if you have a decisive number of them. The Battle of the Gullet shows this, as well as the dragons weakness to ranged attack. Dragon on Dragon combat however I would not advise, in any scenario really. The only example I can see of a straight victory is the battle between Aemond and Lucerys, and that only ended cleanly because Aemond outweighed Lucerys threefold (according to the book) and had years more experience riding. Every other example of combat between dragons ended in mutual defeat. Aemond himself would meet his end in what could be argued as the most even fight between dragons of the war, between himself and Daemon, but in the end the dragons were destroyed weakening both sides (as well as denying them able commanders). Aegon II too, would shatter both his legs in his fight to retake Dragonstone, and while he and Sunfyre can claim victory, again both rider and dragon were incapacitated as a result. So how should dragons be used? Several ways, I think: First, reconnaissance. Excellent flight range, fast as hell and if you choose not to engage the enemy can’t really touch you. Prince Daeron shows this, as the young man proved vital to the Hightower advance from the reach doing exactly this. Second, fire support. Dragons should not be deployed dirslectly to the frontline, anywhere. They are too valuable, costly, and are often ridden by people of supreme importance to the army overall. As such, they should be kept at maximum range most of the time, and deployed at pivotal points of the engagement. To create breaches in a wall, to curtail a cavalry charge. To break a stubborn shield wall. While a Field of Fire style decimation sounds good, the risk in my estimation is too high. Last, that I can think of anyway, deterrence. Frankly, the threat of dragons is more beneficial than actually using them. Since Harrenhall, every lord in the land knows what could happen if you piss off a dragonrider. Using them as a threat can bring rebellions to premature ends before they begin. King Jaraharys I (Spelling, I know…) famously flew to Oldtown with his dragon just to make a point, he also forgave his step-uncle Lord Baratheon very magnanimously, while they were both standing in front of his dragon eating. The Lord got the message. Dragons do not win fights by themselves, and losing one is equivalent to losing a battle by itself. But used properly, you can conquer a continent with them! It’s actually quite possible that the Targaryens fled from Valyria due to some political mishap at court and chose exile on dragonstone rather than death. The whole thing about Danys the dreamer foretelling the destruction of Valyria is likely a myth conjured up afterwards.

I picture Valeria like a modern looking futuristic city with dragons flying about. Hope they bring it to life in HOTD.

57:26 The Starks weren't at the Battle of Kingsroad. The war was over by the time the Starks made it that far South. They didn't make it to Kings Landings until after it was taken by the Tully/Blackwater host.

Also Sarnor is not a city. 6:39 Nymeria didn't travelled to Westeros right away, but I get why you would cut that bc its complicated. A small problem is the animation. The Rhoynar lived near river Rhoyne. These ships sailed into Westeros through the river, not from the western coast of Essos. The area of Rhoynish civilisation is also wrong. 6:50 I dunno its ever stated the people of Dorne are mostly of Rhoynish ancestry. I would actually say Rhoynish ancestry is much smaller than that of the Andals and the First man in Dorne. 7:02 the Valyrian freehold never was that big like depicted on the map. The Kingdom of Sarnor was independent and never part of Valyrian influence. Only mention in Canon from this part of history is this: Sarnor remained a trading partner with Valyria. Qarth likewise wasn't a part of Valyria. 7:38 House Targaryen wasn't the most powerful yes. Yet it was still one of 40 ancient noble houses, so definitely not politically unimportant, minor power or on the periphery. 18:30 We just dont know that. Part of this battle here is made up not canon. 22:00 We only know the location of Aegons footmen. 22:55 Any mention of archers in canon I fear. I wouldnt mind that much but You also got the one fact that is known about this battle wrong. The left and right under Oakhearth and Lannister actually didn't charged right in. The plan was that only the center under king Gardener would charge. The left and right tried to swing and attack from behind but they probably didn't make it in time. 24:29 Sharra Arryn was no king. She is a woman and the king was her son Ronnel. She was just regent. 25:00 The Red keep was finished by king Maegor the cruel, long way after Aegons death. 25:45 Tower of Joy propably wasn't standing yet. And if it was, it got its name from Rhaegar Targaryen like 300 years after conquest. 27:00 Like you mixed two kings, Aenys and Maegor into one I guess. Maegor was the one that defeated the faith militants. 30:20 the council was made up from green supporters except for Lyman Beesbury, so they were not deeply torn. Likewise we don't know if Criston Cole killed him. 32:50 Nope Luk is not Aemonds cousin but nephew. I mean you have the family tree right there. And why does Daeron have such a magnificent beard. He died when he was like fresh 16. Gosh the boy drunk some milk🥛. 33:18 Her sons were not Targaryens but Velaryons. They are sons of Laenor Velaryon. 33:28 Rhaenys isnt a sister of Viserys. Rhaenys is a daughter of Aemon and Viserys is a son of Baelon. 33:55 Is this true? Aegon did not have a majority of noble houses supporting him. It was the opposite I would say. Aegon from the start had like only Lannisters, Hightowers and what... Brackens? Vances of Atranta? Does it sound like a majority? 36:39 The Riverlords didn't join bc Harrenhal was conquered. They joined bc they remembered their oaths of loyalty towards Rhaenyra. They just used Harrenhal as their base, but it was not the reason for them joining. Also, the Tullys stayed neutral in this period and for quite some time, but the map shows them black already. Also, most of the Crownlands joined Rhaenyra. Basically Aegon had just Kings Landing. 39:19 Did you just said Triosh instead of Tyrosh? And why is there a black dragon atop Sunspear? The Dorne was neutral for the entire war. 42:00 These people were just from Dragonstone and Driftmark, bc of their Valyrian blood due to the Targaryens practicing the custom of first night. So the animation of them appearing from all of Westeros is wrong. 44:10 The map is wrong. The Triarchy split their fleet in half. The southern attack pushed as far as Driftmark and they raided the island. So the battle happened on and near the island of Driftmark. When there is not enough material for a battle you add non canon things. When there is a pretty detailed battle description, you ignore it. 45:00 Wrong. Tom and Rowan were in the same army and they were going from the north. The another army coming from the south was under Tarly, Beesbury and Costayne. Uff... Also prince Daeron did not came from Kings Landing. He was in Oldtown as a squire for Lord Hightower for many years. 46:10 these battles were not triumphs for the Lannisters. At the Red fork they were defeated on third occasions by lord Vance before finally breaching the defenses. They also lost their lord/general. Victory sure, but triumph? 46:40 Roddy Dustin was just a lord, why call him a warlord? 48:30 lol Dalton Greyjoy joined the blacks and raided green territory in the Westerlands. So why is the map showing him raiding black territories in the Riverlands? 😅 52:15 ehmm... no. Nettles wasn't even in KL with Addam she was with Daemon in Maidenpool hunting for Aemond. They didn't escaped together. So why call them a pair? 55:40 Ambushed by Addam with a large Riverlord army yet they are never mentioned. Also Ulf the White didn't die in the battle. He was drunk during it. He was then killed later by the greens themselves. 57:10 the army of blacks arrived from the north from kingsroad, not from the west. Also only Riverlords defeated the Baratheon host. Cregan Stark was days behind them. 1:02:40 So you said he was crowned in the Red keep but the video is showing Dragonstone. 1:04:03 You showed Dorne on the map joining the Seven kingdoms. Why is like half of the Reach including Oldtown and the Arbor also joining now. They were part of it from the beginning. Or did your map maker thought this is also part of Dorne? 1:05:25 Aegor "Bittersweet"? 🤣 That one broke me btw. Also Quentyn Ball wasn't Aegons bastard I think. Please all spam 🤓 under this comment. Good work and excellent art work - allthough I would say, the history of house Targaryon is to much for one video (even such a long one). It would be even better, if you had concentrated the video only on the Dance of Dragons (and annother video for the conquest, one for the Dornish war, one for the Blackfyre rebellion etc.).
