Mark my words, these will continue to get higher for a few years then we'll start working our way back down. In 5 years we'll be at normal heights again and people will be talking about all the benefits of lower mounts again. This is like girls and their high / low rise pants. High in the 50's low in the 60's-70's high in the 80's low in the late 90's-00's and now they're back to ridiculously high, running stretch pants halfway up their backs. 😂

I think it also has to do with use cases Most of recent US military engagements have been in the sandbox, out in the open, with some urban warfare and CQB here and there. For those cases, riser actually is pretty handy Now can you imagine fighting in a trench in Ukraine with your optic half a mile above your barel? It would make the soldier have to expose himself way too much and/or cause him to shoot the dirt. There’s a reason optics in WWI and II started to be placed on the side of the weapons

I'm not an expert and I haven't been around for more than a little over two decades, but I feel like the same thing is going on with the change to larger calibers rather than intermediate, as well as the change to rifle length barrels instead of carbine length ones. Who knows, maybe this is also a cycle, like many other things in the world. Perhaps it's just the videos I watch and have watched over the last decade, that's also very much a possibility. Either way I can't help but sometimes think that the perfect rifle ON PAPER would be an intermediate cartridge bullpup with a rifle length barrel and an LPVO with a micro reflex on top (with the mount essentially functioning as a riser, of course). But then there's the list of drawbacks and of course the likelihood of the entire system being a jack of all trades, but master of none. For air rifles it's less of a drawback though, but air rifles themselves are sort of a drawback (though capable).

Awesome info. I used to be old school and mount directly on the rail, just like I was taught back in the day. That was ok back in the open desert, but going into rooms it sucks having to make the "tactical turtle", especially if you have spinal injuries (like many of us do). So I have my riser about in the middle, not too high, and not too low. It's much more comfy to shoot. I appreciate that our gear is evolving and I'm glad y'all put out this video.

I'm glad someone was finally smart enough to understand that your optic should meet at eye level without having to crunch your neck down awkwardly to use your optic, the natural positions are always the easiest, fastest and most efficient. Optic immediately at eye level upon shouldering versus shouldering then having to adjust your head until you can utilize your optic, there's always a better way of doing something until it's perfected, mounting optics at eye level is perfection.

Once you use a riser, train with them, there is no going back.. imo. I love them! I'm looking forward to getting the Scalarworks EXPS mount coming later this year.. For those who don't already know, the new Scalarworks mount entirely replaces the DQ mount on the EXPS optic.

*This is not an argument. This is only friendly advice from a fellow end user.* To the individuals who have questions about his stock weld. The buttstock doesn’t need to be sucked into your body to deliver fast consecutive shots on target. It just has to be touching. To provide just enough contact so the gun doesn’t rotate in flight. But other than that having a super aggressive stock weld is unnecessary. And not actually beneficial. Aggressive forward momentum via your lead leg and a firm grip on the further end of the barrel and that’s more than enough. The lower 3/4s of the stock will do just fine. This also allows you to shoot more naturally without hunching over and doing weird stuff behind the gun. If you can establish strong forward momentum, strong barrel control, keep your back erect, keep your head and eyes naturally positioned AND get a perfect, deep stock weld. Then yes 100% do that. But if you do all of those other things the full contact stock weld is a little less important Hope this helps any current or future gunfighters

Amazing no one mentions cons of something when new, but yrs later, it’s jacked up. Nobody mentioned uncomfortable and back injuries until industry started pushing risers. Also, optics on the A2 is st-d, but let’s put risers on contemporary ARs? While I see the benefits, I also see the possibility of damage to the system of dropped or stuff getting snagged. I love my EXPS-3 on my 11.5. High enough, yet low to be snag-free.

First thing I did when I got my first AR was get a riser, that was like 4 years ago before risers blew up. I grew up shooting older firearms and immediately disliked how much I had to hunker down to the gun. Only my LPVOs sit at standard height, riser doesn’t make sense if considering range.

So, the higher mount is better that the standard mount but also let me add a cheek riser to “also” bring my cheek weld higher. Marketing is awesome!!!
@DJ-fd4qk
@DJ-fd4qk Жыл бұрын
@@OddFortune this isn’t marketing, this has existed on a number of other platforms, most notably precision rifles. Literally look at any DMR or sniper rifle and they all have cheek risers. The M14 EBR, McMillan chasis, Accuracy International rifles, even the SVD. With a cheek riser you aren’t bringing your cheek down to meet the stock and craning your neck, you’re simply making your stock’s cheekweld taller to accommodate your position for more comfortable shooting. Tell me you don’t shoot a lot without telling me you don’t shoot a lot
@OddFortune
@OddFortune Жыл бұрын
@@DJ-fd4qk what is the purpose of the McMillan Clamp Bar or cheek riser or any of the platforms you mentioned? Isn’t to bring the shooter closer in line to the optic and proper eye relief? Also I don’t shoot my ARs with the same posture I shoot my long range guns. You are 100% right about one thing. I definitely don’t shoot enough. Peace Brah!
@DJ-fd4qk
@DJ-fd4qk Жыл бұрын
@@OddFortune no, actually, since eye relief is distance from the scope not height. It's literally to get optimal head height for when you aim through your scope, for the purpose of consistent sight picture AND comfort so as to reduce movement and straining, cause you shoot better when you're comfortable and not craning your neck. The riser on an AR stock literally does the same exact thing except people bitch about it because its an AR and not a Bolt gun

That way if you're up close you just know to aim with the lower dot and say have it zeroed at 8 or 10 yards and be dead accurate and for anything farther you can use the upper dot. I’ll also add that a full length metal rail like a ris 2 or 3 can add a pound or more to the overall weight to the rifle so now it’s heavy and front heavy. You don’t even need a metal rail with this. What people don't seem to address in these high risers is your height as well as your neck length. People who are short, around 5 ft in height, do not usually have this problem as their neck is also not that tall. When I draw my rifle, my head barely moves, and I can easily cheek my rifle. I'm running no risers. I don't have NODs, but if I did, I would assume it would be near identical on drawing and cheeking the rifle. Also, this guy is showing 2 different buttstock positions. One where almost the entire stock pad is in the shoulder pocket, and the other is the bottom of the stock pad in the shoulder pocket. Majority of shooting is done with the bottom part of the stock pad in the shoulder pocket.

I think losing connection to the weapon at your cheek can affect recoil management. I took a class with 2 pretty high level shooters and they just use regular mounts for that reason. I think it just matters what you are going to be using it for. But shredding on split times is another consideration.

I ran a ADM riser with an EoTech in a 3 day carbine class. The ADM riser was equivalent to the Unity Riser height. 2.2 something. It was fantastic the first day which was mostly standing up and square range shooting. The second day when we started awkward shooting positions, barricades, shooting and moving drills, cover and concealment and day 3 around vehicles it became a liability for me. I had terrible issues trying to get good sight pictures I could actually make hits with. You can see an EoTech reticle in awkward shooting positions and still completely miss a target. I know that for a fact. And it gets even harder when SF dudes are screaming at you to get rounds on target and shock collars for hits. Ouch. They really pumped up the stress. I think risers serve a purpose but they definitely are a trend and not for everybody. I think a lot of people run them for the trend or cool factory and gain no benefit from them. On a night vision rig absolutely. They are great for that. Depending on body size and face shape it may work well for you on all your carbines. I’m 5’ 11” with a round face and the riser did not work for me off the square range. But there was a dude in the class that was like 6’ 5” with a long slender face that had a riser and it was perfect for him even when the shooting got awkward. I can shoot those awkward courses of fire from that class with a 1.7 riser with no issue. I gave a riser an honest shake and found it did not work for me.

I honestly have been thinking a lot the different scenarios in which they could be good or bad. I recently put a riser on my eotech and while I do love the heads up position I can shoot from I have wondering what it would be like in less than ideal situations. I am a taller guy which Is mainly why I wanted it to begin with. I kept seeing all the recent preaching on the new way of “heads up shooting” instead of getting down into the rifle. I still have some experimenting to do with it. But your comment definitely got me thinking more about it again.

@writingonthewalls9052
@writingonthewalls9052 Жыл бұрын
*This is not an argument. This is only friendly advice from a fellow end user.* The buttstock doesn’t need to be sucked into your body to deliver fast consecutive shots on target. But if you do all of those other things the stock weld is negligible. Hope this helps any current or future gunfighters.
@writingonthewalls9052
@writingonthewalls9052 Жыл бұрын
@@mumblety96 aggressive stock welds are overrated. And not actually beneficial in dynamic environments. They don’t give you anything that solid forward momentum and a good grip doesn’t give you. Even a light stock weld will keep the gun from rotating. As long as the gun doesn’t rotate your momentum and grip will do the rest of the work.

I understand its more natural looking through a riser, for regular civilians in home defense thats like a 2% improvement of your capabilities, but if your physical capacity has deteriorated to the point you have any kind of trouble looking through a regular optic, thats like 99% drop in your capability to survive, if you cant deal with that then you cant deal with anything.. You need to workout before buying any mount
