When I was growing up, offering people who visit your home on a professional basis cups of tea was a very normal thing and in many places I suspect it remains so. It is a mere courtesy. Boris is not the first to do this and Akshata Murthy will not be the last. What is unusual is that the media report it whereas in the past, they would not have necessarily done so.

Even so, shes not obligated to talk to the media. For example, just bcoz a reporter sits outsides Buckingham palace, doesnt mean the royals have to interact , confirm or dismiss gossip. Media is not judge or jury.

This isn't just an "Indian thing"; Nepalese people, too, will offer a cup of tea for any guests - invited or not. I think it's a way of Asian hospitality and you ought to respect it.

It's the same in the UK, too. "Shall I put the kettle on?“ or" Do you want a cuppa?“ are both offers for tea as well as a way of asking how long the visit will be. People that don't expect to be around for long will refuse the tea but the ones that expect to be over for a while will take it.

In India we offer a glass of water and also Tea for the guest's. Tea is like a traditional servings you'll find in all places in India if you visit their homes.

Its very common in india to bring visitors tea..first day after arriving in Australia I remember bringing tea for guy who came to add foxtel n he got upset n said i never asked for tea.Learnt my lesson that giving tea without asking is not acceoted in western world...n in india its the opposite..This girl quickly ran to avoid this kind of negative but people still r judgemental
