Dr Lucy Kissick - The PhDiaries

One year ago I video-diaried waking up at five thirty am for a week… and loved it so much I’ve continued to do it ever since (minus the filming). One year later, it’s pretty much changed my life. I’m now far more productive, and have been able to work on some quite major side projects during my PhD that I’ve never found time for before. 10/10 would recommend!

My name is Lucy Kissick, I’m a third year PhD student at the University of Oxford (aka “DPhil” as they call us there), and I don’t care whether Pluto is a planet or not, but what I do care is whether there is life dipping its toes in its probable subsurface ocean.

I do it too. Its been 6 months or so that I start my day at 5 in the morning and it has changed my life enormously. It has increased productivity and I plan better, and execute better. I am keeping this routine for the years to come.

Thank you for sharing this Lucy. I remember watching the first video and I opened up my mind to the possibility of also getting up earlier than my usual time. I've been doing it for 95 days now and my life hasn't been the same. The results are simply astounding to me, considering that I never used to think that I was a morning person. With this update from you, I'm all the more encouraged and I'm looking forward to seeing you share more of your experiences.

I woke up at 5 am every morning from 5th through 10th grade because I was an athlete. I was incredibly disciplined. But for the past 10 years, I've stopped waking up early and get little to no real exercise. I know that I am a morning person, but I have become accustomed to going to bed late and waking up very late. Your video has inspired me to readjust my sleep schedule to have more time in the day for the things I enjoy.

Wild guess: the side project is the YT channel? :D I also rise a bit earlier than needed, do some calisthenics and stretching, wake the body up, wake the mind up. When that's ticked for the day, it's all in for my PhD project...(and a side project as well ;)). Lovely video, motivational! Keep 'em coming, Lucy!

I think the last point is very important to remember. I certainly have the urge to fill any extra time with work and 'be productive' which is probably the opposite result of this exercise.

I do really enjoy waking up earlier because for some reason I feel like the time goes by slower and I can get more things done, including homework, but it's getting progressively harder for me now that my health issues have gotten worse (I have an autoimmune disorder that makes me really fatigued). That's exactly how I am, though, where I'm so exhausted after studying or doing research that I don't have enough time to do what I enjoy. But being an HSP introvert, it's so nice to wake up to the quietness in the early mornings!

Lucy Kissick, These *curls in your hair* are *very beautiful; truly charming* !... Never commit the sin of smoothing them out with those little thermal machines that girls use today. And, talking about beauty, the *color of your eyes* is really *fascinating* !...

I've only just discovered your channel and have enjoyed a couple of your videos, you come across really well. I like the reasons that you've chosen for changing your routine. I'm a little intrigued by your accent, I can't pick out exactly where it's from, sounds like a little bit a Liverpudlian sound to me, but not the stereotypical accent (there are many varieties and I enjoy them) that some people imagine, yours is very nice and you choose your words well. Anyway, that might sound a bit strange, but keep making the great videos. All the best.

When people leave the obnoxious throat clearing clips in their videos like this I turn it off immediately- why do you want to irritate your viewers by making them listen to that?
