Nazima Khairzad is a talented athlete from Afghanistan: a country where, if you happen to be born as a girl, you're expected to stay home, and NOT do sports. But Nazima is defying tradition and threats, to follow her greatest passions in life: skiing, hiking, running, and doing sports. Her extraordinary story inspired me to travel to Afghanistan in the first place, and I'm proud to share it with you all.

@@suny1265 Please clarify who you are referring to and what moral high ground. I also don't judge other cultures but I don't think Eva was doing that and Nazima was merely telling her own story. This is a far cry from virtue signalling, believe me. My personal belief is that there is no good reason to deny a fellow human being the right to pursue their own path, wherever that may lead them. Consequences will arise naturally as a result but they bear responsibility. It is the chauvinist who sees himself as strong and virtuous. Live and let live.

Think, believe, and have whatever vile perception about our prophet you want (unless you want to educate yourself about prophet muhammad pbuh from *acurate sources*) but don't spread hatred and pass malicious comments against one of the most noble religious figure on public platform. He is no common man for Islamic believers and people have deep reverence for him. So as a fellow human, you should not offend others by passing such pity comment.

@Anna Gilyanna See, I don't deny the reality of Islamic extremism and I, as any other civilized muslim condemn such activities. I just know those activities, in any way are not justified and motivated in Islam. They are motivated by narrow minded extremists who think killing people who don't practice Islam and oppose it is a holy war. I would like to cite the teachings of Prophet Muhammad PBUH about holy war for you. Like majority of non-muslims, you too are misled by half knowledge of Islam. Suppression of women rights, the perception is factually incorrect, Islam may not encourage women to equally compete with men but it does encourage women to educate themselves in order to educate other women (as men are not allowed) and if no other source, earn their own living. Also, it is not mandatory for women to cover themselves from head to toe, they just need to wear loose clothings and their heads, especially hairs should not be visible to other males. Islam forbids many seemingly normal activities but every rule has its own rationale.

@Anna Gilyanna While you people love to cite Quranic excerpts like “kill them where u find them,” you ignore that such verses clearly refer to treatment of those who would violently persecute Muslims or any person because of his faith. Similarly, every other verse that seems violent has a justification. I bet you don't realize how misled you are about Prophet Muhammad PBUH that you didn't know he commanded the following uncompromising rules of war: O people! I charge you with some rules; learn them well…for your guidance in the battlefield! Do not commit treachery, or deviate from the right path. You must not mutilate/disfigure dead bodies. Neither kill a child, nor a woman, nor an aged man. Don't destroy a church or a temple. Bring no harm to the trees, nor burn them with fire, especially those which are fruitful. Slay not any of the enemy's flock, save for your food. You are likely to pass by people who have devoted their lives to monastic services; leave them alone. Don't kill an animal except for eating. Be good to the prisoners and feed them. And in the end, don't enforce Islam. Islam at every step encourage peaceful living of every one. All I'm saying is please don't disrespect and spread hatred against it. Thank you.

As an Afghan, I would like to thank you for coming here. You are braver than all of us. Because you have risked your life to reflect the lives of our hopeless and hapless people. Afghanistan is a country full of stars but hidden behind the clouds of war and terror. As an Afghan in my early 20's, I have seen nothing but war, guns, bullets, and heard nothing but bomb blasts, gunshots... And all of these have taught me one thing that I will never forget and it is that being here in Afghanistan is like being in a cage and seeing the outside world and saying how beautiful it must be to be free and live and travel without any fear. I think most of the Americans, Europeans, and others don't really know how fortunate they are to have such peaceful countries and can live, and love as they want. I can only imagine how amazing and beautiful it must be to live without the fears that I have been living all my life. It is a kind of philosophical truism that says: you only know the value of a thing when you don't have it. It is only in its absence that you can understand its true value. Anyway, I hope, and I live for this hope that one day, the peace-thirsty Afghans would eventually get to the ocean of life and live the lives they all deserve. Agree with you -- sooo sad beyond words. I am a retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer and served a year-and-a-half in Vietnam -- a half-century ago. Same thing happened in 1975, when I saw on TV what happened at the end of that war. Tore my heart to pieces, as I had met so many wonderful Vietnamese men and women. Yes, Westerners have no idea at all of the struggle the people in your country (and other places) have on a daily basis just to survive. I hope and pray that, over time, things in Afghanistan will improve. I don't know how, but I hope. Peace be with you and all who suffer in Afghanistan.

@Win Everything your comments are full of judgement. The whole point of this vlog is that this girl wants to do something different. Therefore she should have the option to do that. No matter what her society says. This should be a human right for ALL. I hope that is clear for you to understand. Islam. Is not prescriptive. It’s only your interpretation of Islam that is limiting. As is your interpretation of what women should and shouldn’t do under Islam. Please go educate yourself. Then you won’t make yourself look so foolish.

@@Nadia.travels People like this are so paranoid about their own women (be it their mothers sisters or cousins) that they must use every aspect of religion to prevent their women from being merely SEEN by the opposite gender. Their trust in their women is so low that they have become so insecure about other men "touching, looking or talking" to their women. Islam is a great religion however it has bred such insecurity in men that the whipping of women has become common place. This guy wouldn't hesitate to stone his own sister to death if she were to be seen walking past a person of the opposite gender.

But i dont see that stopping the taliban whom have the same rhetoric you are showing, going around killing other ethnic groups, whipping and stoning their women. Sarah & Marek Let's not forget that Afghanistan used to be a very different country with a different culture before the USA "created" the talibans. Universities were full with girls... So we can't speak about tradition here.

@Amina Binte Zakir I agree with you, except that this is not the tradition of Afghanistan, since things were different before the creation of talibans by the USA, and they are different where talibans are absent. The reaction of Nazira's family is certainly influenced by these talibans or by the culture, true, in villages.

And Talibans are a group created, trained and armed by the USA to fight against The Soviet Union (Russia and other communist states, the soviet union has collapsed, it does not exist any more, its only "remains" are the "big" Russia) during their invasion of Afghanistan in the seventies. When the soviets left Afghanistan, Taliban used their american "teachings", training and arms to be what they are now, and to fight against the new ennemy : USA. This is of course a brief summary.

@Win Everything i am sure your intentions are good, but brother i have not seenvthis girl "loose her clothes", in fact she is more covered than many of the girls who wear a scarf. Brother you say most of the people are against this kind of activities. My answer to you is we should fear ONLY the law of God subhanah wa ta ta3ala. Don't you this verse where Allah 3azza wa jal says " fear me, not them..." (them = people). And an other verse where He says : "Don't make haram what i have made halal..." Brother i have chosen to be muslim to folliw the wonderful Quran and the sunna, not to follow all the Muslims of the world who declare haram whatever they don't like. Because of people like you, wemen have lost most of the freedom that Islam came to give them. Please tell me how the pleasure she has by skiing is a sin : Is she stealing, comploting against someone, spying on her neighbors, being jealous , is she commiting zina, is she lying and deceiving etc etc. Heee i wish we were REAL fundamentalists, when wemen were the proud riders of the fastest arabic horses, when they sang in groups and on streets to accompny a bride to her husband's house, when they were the proud transmitters of the teachings of the Prophet salla Allahu 3aleyhi wa sallam, when they could freely and frankly tell a man that they admire and love him, and wish to be his spouse...

I hope it too. I just found out that there's snow in the middle east especially in Afghanistan. But sadly I'm just did the research that the snow is very dangerous for the people there. Most of the area is completely blocked of snow so it is very difficult for the people who living in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Hopefully this is resolved soon 😊👍

Wow, this touched me. Nazima is so brave and courageous! ❤ As a Canadian woman, I take everything for granted. I've lived a risk-free life, and I'm thrilled for Nazima because she is a trail blazer and a true inspiration for Afghani Girls and Women. I wish all the best for her; I hope all her hopes and dreams come true. She deserves nothing less. 👏👏 Eva, thank you so much for sharing her important story. This was also a first for you; skiing in Afghanistan! I've said it numerous times, you're the most interesting person on KZfaq, hands down. I live vicariously through you. At 60, I'm thinking now my life has been so, so incredibly dull.

As an Afghan, I would like to say that some of the stuff Nazima had said is simply not true. I have 5 sisters and they are educated and have earned their degree from Kabul University. I have close females relatives, cousins, second cousins, family friends, etc. and they have all attended schools and earned their degrees from Kabul university or private colleges. During my primary, secondary, and post-secondary education I have had female students who were actively involved in sports such as basketball volleyball, and combat sports such as Taekwondo. In big cities such as Kabul, Herat, Mazarsharif, Jalalabad females actively attend schools and attend local fitness clubs. During my years living in Afghanistan, I have never heard of female friends and relatives that they were forced by their family members or friends to stop going to schools or receives death threat if they go against their family member wishes. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who provide false information because that what people buy. I wish you have visited schools in cities like Kabul, Mazar Sharif, and other parts of the country where females freely attend schools. Cheers

Not everyone has the luxury to attend schools and this is international problem. According to the National Center of Education about 21% of American Adults fall into illiterate category and that is around 43 million people. In the United Kingdom 16% of people are uneducated. Amish allow female education until grade 8. The illiteracy rate in India is about 30% and in Nigeria is about 35%. France banned Muslim’s females to attend schools if they wear a hijab, Netherlands and Norway do not allow women to attend schools who wear full veil. Education is an international problem and this need to change so male and female could freely have access to school.

@@timharris7904 Thats not the rule in Afghanistan. The number of kids not attending school ist about 3,7 million! and among this 60% girls Unicef says. Happy you come out of a privileged family and living in cities, but all women have the same right to go to school and study, even girls from poor families.

The video is presented in a way to show that women cannot get an education which is not true. Every country has its problem and in the United States, over 30% of the population or 40 million people are considered illiterate, similarly, in other parts of the world, there are people who do not have access to education. In spite of 40 years of continuous wars, Afghanistan men and women still have access to education. Please do not compare Afghanistan with your country or European country, because they are totally different cultures, societies, economies, and security. Cheers

@Win Everything I’m well aware of radical feminism but in Islam women are allowed to have their basic rights like studying, doing sports or others things. In rural Afghanistan they don’t fully understand Islam. They don’t even allow women to get out of the house.

I wish this wouldn’t be labeled “conservative”. It’s oppressive/ backward/radical. “Conservative” would mean they uphold some positive traditions and that it’s a political position. This is not a women’s rights issue, it’s a human rights issue.

I came across your channel yesterday, and i am watching this vlog after the news of taliban taking over parts of afghanistan. It is just so heartbreaking to hear her say that they expect the situation for girls to change in few years but it only got worse. I really feel sad for the people of afghanistan🥺. It makes me realise how lucky we are to enjoy everything that we have and be grateful for everything we have. As a Muslim from Yemen I am really sad that we ended like this, I always think about this new dress code for women, and wonder why they choose black color of all colors, I know Japanese ninjas wear black to hide in the dark and be invisible, do they really want to make women invisible? As a male I can't imagine how can you live when you are being forced to be invisible from this world. This is disgusting, I hope Wahhabism and the rest of extremists ideologies go away soon.

Eva, thank you so much for visiting my beautiful country. I love seeing this video through your beautiful heart. Thank you for your love of the people and for showing a side of Afghanistan no one sees. I left Afghanistan as a little girl in 1980 and I remember that painful day vividly like it was yesterday. We left family and all our belongings behind. That was due to the war with Russia and unfortunately the Taliban like a horrible plague just won’t go away. The people of Afghanistan need to rise against them and do what Nazima Jaan is doing in order to make a change. Nazima Jaan thank you for your bravery and I’m so happy and proud that you are fighting to make a change. May god keep you safe from the evil that live amongst the innocent Afghan people. May you succeed in whatever you set and may the Taliban be gone like a nasty virus that they are. Nazima Jaan offareen 😘♥️ 🇦🇫

@Win Everything well that's your point and I respect your perspective. But isn't it bad to force Islam against their will? What about LA IKRAHA FID DEEN. Tell them what's correct and leave it on them. Islam doesn't appreciate forcing religion on anyone. Either beautify these teachings to the level they come running towards it or leave them on their will. Eventually people come back to Allah if that is in their fate. But you can't force violently. No one can!

Not everywhere in Afghanistan people are treated like that, where I’m from Jaghori, Ghazni province girls have regular volleyball and football competitions. Nazima is so brave I am proud of her! One of my favorite books is about Afghanistan. It is called "the Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. The book is amazing and for the first time gave me an idea of what life is like in Afghanistan. So it's so interesting to see your series. Send greetings to you and Nazima,Sajjad,Gull and the crew. Eva, this is a fine piece of journalism! Nazima's story really strikes home for me. It is unfathomable to me that anyone would try to control someone and not let them ski or go to school or socialize with anyone they please. This sort of vlog is so powerful because it makes Afghanis, at least some of them, seem so relateable. Every country has a lot of nuance and it is easy for foreigners to over generalize a population. I pray for all Afghanis like Nazima to be safe and find happiness in light of what is happening there since this vlog was published.

So powerful! I ended the video crying and very emotional. Your work in this video was incredible, alternating her clips of sharing her story and struggles with the clips of you actually doing skiing. You can se how lively she looks when going out for doing sports with you guys. And then you realize how all of the hardships that she shares ends up being worth it. Beautiful work, Eva! Seeing this brave young woman who lives in a country where skiing comes with death threats, and rebellion for equality starts with going outside or study, makes me so humble and almost ashamed of my privileged life and my complains.
