Rival Schools is a series that has held a special place in my heart for many years, and yet sadly it's fallen off most people's radars. Well let's fix that today as we dive into the series and learn more about these fire ball throwing students than you ever wanted to.

its not street fighter or RE so of course it was going to be a no. i mean if there's one thing that we learned is that capcom fears two things....risk, and money, and if there is a possibility that a game might make more money than their dying cash cow, then that will always be a hard NO for them

That is so realistic. They don’t care about the good things but are too busy doing street fighter releases although the stuff they have locked in their vault is awesome. I even made an OC for rival schools (and street fighter due to them being in the same universe) named Alex Jones. He is a student at pacific high and is the number one fan of Ibiki. He attended the school whilst Roy (who was a member of pacific HS himself) was president of the US. He uses a mixture of judo and karate (along with some aura manipulation put in there) and only fights to protect his friends and loved ones ( just like Goman but without the religious side). He is a kind and compassionate kid who is really eager to learn more about Japanese culture (unlike Roy when he went to high school).

I remember magazines at the time selling the second disc as a “loan it to a friend so they can practice and become a fan!” disc, like it was some odd marketing strategy, little realizing we were missing out on the school sim. It kinda makes sense Capcom left that out given it was so foreign to the western market at the time, but a lot of non-US friendly genres were being brought over and making fans of us, and I know now this would be a welcome feature in an HD port/collection.

They were; Sakura was put into RS on Playstation mainly to help the game sell more copies. The fact that Sakura is in a completely different high school than everyone else proves this. Arika did this with SFEX on PSX too, slapped Sakura in to make the game sell more. Sakura was a highly popular character from at least '96-'98. Concerning Bloody Roar the worst entry in the series BR4 has as a mode this customization mode where you select a character on the roster and go around winning various fights to get DNA points in order to unlock new moves and abilities for your customizable character and before you say BR4 has a CaZ mode a Create-A-Zoanthrope Mode nope BR4 does not have a Character Creation Mode the customizable character is a established character on the roster, and to pour even more salt on the wound this mode is the only way to unlock Long, Shina, Uranus, Khoryu, and Dragon Ryoho as playable characters and they each cost a ridiculously high number of DNA Points to unlock with Long, Shina, Uranus, Khoryu costing around 500,000 DNA Points to unlock as playable characters, and Dragon Ryoho costing around 1,000,000,000 DNA Points to unlock as a playable character, now if it was just Uranus, Khoryu, and Dragon Ryoho being the only unlockable characters this wouldn't be so bad as ever since BR3 Khoryu, and Uranus have been unlockable characters, and Dragon Ryoho is BR4's final boss it makes since that he's a unlockable character that takes a lot of effort to unlock, but to cut Long, and Shina two fan-favorite protagonists who have been series mainstays since the first 2 games from the base roster only to make them unlockable by earning and spending 500,000 DNA Points in what should've been a fully-fleshed out Character Creation Mode is BS on every level.

14:40 AU CONTRAIRE MR THORGI You forget that at that time Capcom had also developed Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future. Being set in the story known as Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro is also a delinquent searching for who is hurting his mother. In fact, the similarities could be uncanny based on the fact that Capcom really loves Jojo. Take Guile and Juri as an example of how big of fans they are. Guile being inspired by Stroheim and J. And yes, we played it in japanese. The thing about it is you got to fight often in it, while choosing the power and moves that you character would have. So it was like a roulette for us, which sucked, but it was such an interesting concept that it thralled us in. I think it would have been fucking awesome to have this translated, and I can't believe we were the only ones that was hooked up by it. The amazing thing about Rival Schools is that its a concept that would work flawlessly nowdays and yet it is buried in our hearts. Such good stuff!

The PocketStation was HEAVILY covered in PSM during the late 90s, especially because Final Fantasy 8 was to use it as a side quest for a baby Chocobo you would raise to adulthood and use as a summon, I think. Obviously this was left out of the American version but you were still given the baby Chocobo, just no way to raise it unless you imported a PocketStation (at least in the PS1 release of the game).

I still have my copy of the US PS release, though if I were to tell a friend to buy a copy I would advise them to at least get the evolution disc if it was a choice between one or the other. The franchise deserved so much better than what they got. I would at least advise an HD remake of the first game if not just merging all the games somehow as one continuous story. Heck, they already have a script, just refine it a little and animate the cutscenes. Also in the case of the original game, the gameplay really does make the game despite how outdated the graphics are. Hell I bought the Kanzuki Beach stage because Tiffany and Hinta were in the background, I didn't care if they were swimsuits they could've been fully dressed for all I care, I just wanted to see them again.

I'm kinda glad they had the Guts(heh) to portray Roy as actually xenophobic. People like that exist and they do have their reasons for the way they act. Not good reasons, but with countries going into wars all the time, and resentful feeling that people cannot direct properly, xenophobia becomes terribly common. But seeing how direct experience with a foreign culture can change someone's outlook is an actually mature direction to take for a fighting game, a genre that from its inception focused on multi-culturalism as a defining aspect.

One of the best retrospective videos of Rival Schools. The only that was missed in the video is Street Fighter Online: Mouse Generation crossover game where Batsu and Akira made a return. This is why I really wish Batsu would also be part of SFV these two characters are awesome.

I really loved this series, and was so happy I got to play both of the English titles in arcades. The latter one... I think I played not too long ago, not even a couple or so years back. It's always nice to see old classics in a lively arcade. Had good memories of playing Shoma and Natsu. Was never actually good at the games, having them eat my quarters nonstop, but I had fun with the characters and loved the level of story that I didn't get much out of from other arcade games I'd get to play outside of maybe the House of the Dead titles. Really nostalgic feelings... Super glad to hear Akira getting that love, and opening up so many doors for things to come.

Even before Akira was announced, one of the DLC stages in SFV (Kanzuki Beach Stage, 2016), it teased two Rival Schools characters in the background (Hinata and Tiffany). A lot of fans were believing at this time that Rival Schools and Street Fighter were married into the universe along with the Final Fight series.

Capcom also did another fighting game with branching stories depending on how you play. Tech Romancer. We should also have that back too. Every story path played out like a Saturday Morning or after school anime show. Fantastic presentation and a mech for every kind of mech or cyber type fan. Great IP's that Capcom just abandons because they go easy mode and just keep using Street Fighter, using a name to make the big money. Cuz yeah, Capcom has a problem understanding how nostalgia and a versatile portfolio works.
@Sorain1
@Sorain1 2 жыл бұрын
Tech Romancer was amazing, the fact they wrote entirely different genre's of plot based on which character you played as, then fit each other character into a role in that story? Bloody brilliant. Heck, two different pilots on the same mech? Completely different tone of story. (It was the gundam expy, where one was a very ZZ Gundam style romp and the other a Zeta Gundam style tragedy.) From classic super robot show plots to a serious war drama with an ensemble cast for the big stompy military robot that couldn't jump. (With only one crew member surviving to bury the rest in the GOOD ending.) I really wish we could get a modern take on that game.
@Bangcat
@Bangcat 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sorain1 A character for just about every anime mech type. More standard Gundam story you had Dixon, but yeah the other back and forth swapping one was like some of the others. They even covered the not entirely mech ones like alien body type anime like ultra man, and even had a junk bot in there. There was just so many things well done with it and it deserves to be on a fighting game collection. We'll just about never see a sequel out of Capcom for something that was so different, content packed, and over all just brilliantly well done and told in stories for such a presentation to come together, but would be great to have it again in some form.

Even as a fan I never knew that Capcom put a stop to RS & SF sharing the same universe. This makes the announcement of Akira huge as you said. Thank you for your research and a really well put together video. I can’t wait to see more! Might we see a Power Stone video in the future? 👀

Fun fact: The letter “V” in Japan is pronounced with a “B” sound, making “Vatsu” literally the same name as “Batsu.” It’s sort of a joke name for translators as, in the Japanese version, Vatsu doesn’t even have a name. 😂
