Mount Mitchell is not only the highest elevation in North Carolina, the Appalachian Mountains, and North America east of the Mississippi River, but it is also the centerpiece of NC's first state park.
The story of how the mountain got its English name (after thousands of years of indigenous people living there) is an amazing one. This is that story.

The heat index in Nashville hit triple digits in early Friday afternoon traffic. I was in my van and I said, “Siri, I want directions to nearest, highest elevation near me.” Four hours later I was stretched out watching the Sunset from Mt. Mitchell at 67 degrees. Probably the smartest, most therapeutic trip ever. Thanks for your work

Wow if Morganton was his last stop before he started walking, that's 30 miles away from that mountain peak! in straight line! what a journey, I got lost for a few hours hiking from a few miles away from the peak, found a beautiful unmarked waterfall, still unmarked. I envy the ability to navigate lands like these people.

Kinda related. There’s been a movement afoot with hikers going up Mt LeConte just out of Gatlinburg stacking rocks at High Point trying to get Mt LeConte higher than Clingmans Dome. In the many years this has gone on, Clingmans is still taller. This I think is still going on even with the rock huggers poo pooing it!

Whoa, that is crazy! I think maybe whatever man-made structures or rock-stacks get put up, we have to give these mountains credit for whatever height they are. All of those areas are amazing.

Clingman's last laugh bit doesn't tell the actual story. There was a tower on Mitchell that was torn down around 2010ish, and it was easily 3 to 4 times the height of the one rebuilt in its place. So when Clingmans tower was constructed, the old tower on Mitchell was still standing! So it wasn't anyone with the department of the interior saying, let's win one for Clingmans. Nice "tall tell", I guess this is how they start. Facts are facts though.

Fair enough! That's a good point about the old tower. So, yes, probably not intentional on anyone's part, however Clingman's tower does stand taller as of today.
