Kinda related. There’s been a movement afoot with hikers going up Mt LeConte just out of Gatlinburg stacking rocks at High Point trying to get Mt LeConte higher than Clingmans Dome. In the many years this has gone on, Clingmans is still taller. This I think is still going on even with the rock huggers poo pooing it!

Father's family lived on Alston Ave 1919-30ish. G-PA (Squirrley) drafted WWI (got gassed in France 1918) Both dad's parents worked cigarette factory. When G-ma started having kids in 1920 (Dad & 2 sisters) she worked out of their house stringing the gold thread through Bull Durham tobacco pouches. Paid by the piece. G-PA worked Liggett Meyers. His father had a small grocery at 106 Alston Avenue. Found him murdered on RR Tracks Pettigrew Street. (Behind now DPAC). G-PA took over but depression came and couldn't continue lending victuals to the Haytai residents. Moved the family out to his sister's husband land on Briar Creek, Wake County. Hwy 70. Tobacco farmer and moonshiner. When Dad retired from Navy in 1962 he moved back home out there on Briar Creek on family land. I got an instant education on flue-cured tobacco farming. Did that 7-12th grades. Today, Briar Creek is an.Arnold Palmer Golf Community, retail business, banking,,,, RDU Airport expanded, too. Cemetery is still there on Hwy 70. Was Westland now call Briar Creek?

Clingman's last laugh bit doesn't tell the actual story. There was a tower on Mitchell that was torn down around 2010ish, and it was easily 3 to 4 times the height of the one rebuilt in its place. So when Clingmans tower was constructed, the old tower on Mitchell was still standing! So it wasn't anyone with the department of the interior saying, let's win one for Clingmans. Nice "tall tell", I guess this is how they start. Facts are facts though.
@GEEKORMANАй бұрын
Fair enough! That's a good point about the old tower. So, yes, probably not intentional on anyone's part, however Clingman's tower does stand taller as of today.

There is an annual 102 mile bicycle ride that ends at the summit of Mt Mitchell. It draws pros and amateurs from all over the world. The 74 mile Assault of Marion bike ride was required to be accomplished before you could try the Assault of Mt Mitchell in years past. That ride starts in Spartanburg, SC and ends at the base of Mt Mitchell in Marion, NC at the fifth rest stop. For the Mt Michell ride you continue up the mountain for 4 more rest stops but if you don’t reach that Marion rest stop by a certain time they won’t let you proceed up the mountain. Now you can pay the registration fee and ride either Assaults (without qualifying with the Marion ride first). The Assault on Marion is a challenge of itself and has mountains of its own. Many riders don’t complete it on their first try. If you continue on and do the 74 miles of that ride to do the Assault on Mt Mitchell it’s a steep 28 more miles all uphill climb. Each ride is a continuous one to be completed in one day for many hours of riding. No eBikes are allowed. There are cut off times for each ride with SAG vehicles to pick up riders that quit or have mechanical difficulties along the route. And don’t worry-you don’t ride your bike back down from the mountain to Marion-there are buses to take you and your bike back down to Marion where you can pre-park your car the day before. (You’re not allowed to park your car at the summit.) But the weather does change on top of the mountain to cold, foggy, rainy or sometimes even snow! Rode the Assault on Marion twice, once in 102 F degrees in the shade and once in the freezing rain. Now just help out with the rest stops as a volunteer. You’d be amazed how many riders push themselves to get to the top of Mt Mitchell to be the first!! To show you how hard that ride is, the first rest stop on Mitchell is only two miles from the base of the mountain at Marion’s rest stop with three more rest stops before the summit!!!

In the late 70's I explored Zealandia and Helen's Bridge pretty extensively. It was abandoned at the time. I even wrote a term paper on the place for one of my history classes. Been up there day and night. Many years later I was fortunate to get a short tour of the interior. Employees who worked there agreed the place was haunted but it had only been pleasant experiences nothing bad. One thing you may find interesting is that there once was a large carriage house associated with the property that did burn down. I have explored its ruins. Is that perhaps the source of the fire mentioned in the Helen story? Was it perhaps large enough for someone to live there? I do not know. Once, very late one night, after picking up my son and his GF from a movie, I drove them up to Helen's Bridge and called for Helen to come forth. Nothing happened....then. As we were driving back down, just before we came to the first homes I came to a stop sign. My son's GF says: "what's that"?, I turned my head to see that a woman with long dark hair, wearing what appeared to be a flowing white night gown had just appeared by some bushes not very far from our car. We watched as she crossed the street and began to pick what seemed to be unseen berrys or something from a bush that was not there. We immediately left the area and never looked back. I've taken a few car loads of teenagers up there over the years since and except for some druggies we have not seen anything else up there at night.
@GEEKORMAN3 ай бұрын
Wow. I would love to explore Zealandia. Not sure about the carriage house or the fire story, there are so many different stories floating around about that area. Crazy about the woman you saw!
@TheCephas643 ай бұрын
@GEEKORMAN Indeed there are a lot of stories, who knows. I have been told that there are no official or newspaper stories to back up the Helen suicide story. But the legend has lingered for so long and so many folks have told the stories, there has to be a kernel of truth in it some where. Thanks for covering the story and the area so well!

The carriage house was still there in 1978, so it wouldn't have been the source of the fire story...

I am a little surprised that Durham does not make more of its connections with Piedmont blues given the interest there is today - even in terms of self - interest, the popularity of this music would enhance the town's reputation. I am very into this form of country blues, and play several Blind Boy Fuller tunes in an acoustic duo. People really dig Piedmont blues as it's upbeat and has a little more going on than the Delta style....which I also love. Thank you for this documentary; it's concise and informative, and I'm sure folk who know little about this regional style of blues will be turned on to it.

Didn’t knew anything about him before that. And I’m so happy that I found him. I have his two vinyl albums for about 7 years, but I still didn’t open them, keep them to some special moment maybe. there is something special about him, something mystical..
