FKlejs I kept asking the same thing. It could have gotten in for a ton of free damage before the freebooter hit the board.

The only answer is that LSV didn't see it. He definitely missed a bunch of free damage.

Yeah because the format is completely solved? Just like when Hour came around everyone assumed the format was still blisteringly fast like from Amonkhet. It may end up that way but it's too early to call now.

I mean the activation cost is real. Merfolk are aggressive and tiny. Value aside I feel as if you just want to stay low and fast versus trying to eek out some card advantage or play the longgggggg game. IRL I would take Kumena for the card value (and realistically they are razor thin close in terms of picks) but I feel like the low cost lord is correct overall.

Even at the pt I would seriously consider that pick, I mean Kumena gives you the kind of inevitability that mistbinder never can.

Remember, Kumena taps himself for his abilities, you only need two more merfolk for free cards and you can get those of just one other source...

Yeah although mistbinder has more immediate value Kumena almost certainly wins you the game if it comes down on a board with 2+ merfolk

I had him with a board full of merfolk and he is a powerhouse and totally destroyed when he went off.

There is a good reason the card is the most expensive one of the set at 20+ tickets

the difference is that by picking Mistbinder over Kumena his limited deck got better but there was nothing to pick in Blood Sun's pack (once it came back around) that bettered his deck

ElTeddo Agreed! A pleasant change after Ixalan and Hour which were both abysmal IMO.

You're in the vast minority not liking Hour.

Amonkhet & Hour were abysmalit was pretty disheartening to play a 2/3 on turn 3 and it to always be a speed bump or unable to block whatever your opponent was turning sideways2/3's used to brick or trade vs 2 or 3 drops in older setsat least now a 2/3 actually keeps out the weenies againand 2 less packs of pirate's cutlass

Hour of Devastation had a good GW Exert aggro deck, and some other aggro decks that weren't very good. And 2/3s don't block Kitesail Corsair, Giltgrove Stalker, or Goblin Trailblazer, which are all new commons. Don't count on a 2/3 being a reliable roadblock in this format either.

Junglej0hn The card would only make him win harder in those situations but if he faced a more aggressive deck misty and kumena are not even comparable.

To your point, I am pretty new to the format. I have now seen 3 matches out of which 3 out of 3 had a board stall. Also I think that the deeproot elite outperformed the mistfolk in match 3 and that if lsv hadn't drawn rather well would have probably lost to a sworn guardian where Kumena would have easily beat it. The format + the Merfolk tribal itself seems to reward being on the attack and so Kumena which rewards you for being defensive is not what you want, but seeing how matches actually played out, in hindsight, I think Kumena would have been better.

It's almost like he had an initial view of the card based on years of experience with similar cards... but then after playing the card and the format realized it's actually quite good and thus changed his view of the card.

I think they're both very unlikely to wheel (~30% or less), so power level should really be the only consideration.

Khazuki I'd say kumena is powerful enough to take even without wheeling anything. Because of this, I think the greater chance of mistbinder wheeling might be worth taking into account. I still agree with lsv's pick, just thinking about the best case scenario.

I also would've taken Kumena. It's better with no other merfolk and it's probably better with 2 other merfolk in play. But I would have zero expectation of either wheeling. Even when you know your colors/tribe are open, cards that powerful usually get hate drafted or spec picked out of an otherwise empty pack.

James Why is everyone so butthurt over that card? Even when you get it to do stuff (which is never in limited) it doesn't do anything particularly special.

Its easy enough to get 3 or 5 merfolk, pump them EOT, most are hexproof or unblockable. Ive just had a lot of fun, in Limited, with it. Im not butthurt, and I dont care about the money, I just think its a fun card, like a mini-plainswalker with its abilities.

I'm not saying its the better choice, I'm saying its the most fun choice. See "This isnt the PT" ... meaning, he probably made the right choice.

What if I watch lsv to see him draft like a pro tour I have far more fun watching him drafting a better deck

The irony is apparently several other people did. Also, if you're rage-closing LSV drafts you're missing out on a lot of learning opportunities.

Romain Verneyre I feel that merefolk is a high risk high reward archetype. If you get the lords and boons the deck is nigh unbeatable. But if there are more fish drafters at your table things can get very bad very quick.

Alkoholwioslaidziwki i also feel like 2-3 stops are best and 4 mana should be be considered high cost. At least in Draft.

Mistbinder also does it immediately rather than making you take turns off. I'd definitely take Kumena since it's going for 22 tix right now and it's close enough that it's still a good pick, but I do agree that Mistbinder is better.

BlaineTog kumena I suppose it's close but not only is kumena more resilient to removal it's also a mythic- the simple fact is that we actually don't know which one is objectively better. You are going to see plenty of mistbinder whereas with kumena you may open him once maybe twice.

I don't agree that the floor is the same. Instantly having an anthem and costing 2 mana is a big deal.

If you think that a 3drop with mediocre stats and highly conditional abilities is better than an on tribe 2drop lord in a fast format you are simply bad at Magic.

Troy Moore obviously Kumena's anthem requires some work (with significantly higher upside) but even if it eats a removal spell kumena should be able to atleast replace itself. This is what makes Kumena a better pick for me. Both of them will be lightning rods for removal and while Mistbinder is cheaper Kumena is more resilient and more importantly even if it gets removed it should almost always be able to cantrip unless you are very far behind in which case kumena is still better because of the 2/4 body. That all being said I do agree it's relatively close and i wouldn't fault anyone for taking mistbinder but I'll take first kumena over second mistbinder almost every time, regardless of monetary value.

Glad I wasn't the only one. There is a fine line between "disciplined pick" and ignoring obviously easy picks. That was just dumb, he was in merfolk, you pick the best merfolk in the set, not a second Lord. Its a finisher.

Was it the correct pick because LSV said so? I think it depends on the speed of the format. The later the game goes the better Kumena is. If you curve out then maybe the pure lord is better but not enough better to give up a card that wins through board stalls and is better on defense and dodges some removal. And definitely not enough better to skip on evaluating the mythic and getting a chance to show a draft with a fun card.

@big .guy - That's kind of an exaggeration of what I said. Just pointing out that as a viewer, it made me uninterested in watching the rest of the video. He could have said, yeah the uncommon is what I'd take in the pro tour like many CFB people do to show what he thought was better but then still take the more fun card.
