One of my all time favorite bikes of all time! My 1996 (I think) Rivendell All-Rounder has been my touring bike of choice for the past few years. It's a very special bike made of Reynolds 753 Tubing at the Waterford Precision Cycles factory in Waterford, WI. Originally it was designed as the next iteration of the infamous cult classic Bridgestone XO-1 as a 26" Road Bike, or basically the first "Gravel Bike" ever produced. I've built this bike up with some of my all time favorite bicycle components over the years. Hyper practical 3x8 Shimano XT drivetrain with bar end shifters. Fancy XTR hubs, Rene Herse tires, Nitto stem and bars, etc. etc. etc. The Chris King headset was binding on me and I've never taken it apart enough to really learn why. A friend was telling me the head tube has to be just exactly perfect to accomdate the tight machine tolerances used by King, so I jumped at the chance to get out my facing tool and headset press and see what's up. What I discovered made me sick! Be sure to stick around for a "Bike Check" where I follow the camera around to point out all the cool features of this one-of-a-kind All-Rounder as I get it ready for an adventure in The Black Hills of South Dakota!

Chris King sells the seals, snap rings, and even the grease they like so you can re-grease the bearings; which is a maintenance action for their headsets.

Gorgeous bike. I'm super jealous. The Green Frameset with the tan sidewall Rene Herse and the silver accents are just gorgeous. Very well thought out and just a fabulous. The best bikes in the USA are built in Wisconsin. This bike screams class.

Love your Videos man keep it up! Just one tip from a professional bike mechanic- never ever turn the Reamer in the other direction! Always turn in cutting direction even when pulling out. Otherwise it will not last long and you got to replace a pretty expensive tool sooner than needed. When cutting threads you can turn the tool in the other direction but not when reaming. I hate to post such things but it hurts to see that^^ and i know how expensive those tools can be.. Anyway nice Ride- greetinsg from Austria! :)

I was taught the same in 1990. Even when ‘retreating’, spin the same direction as when advancing into the cut. We always used a thicker, oily lube. I prefer to use the compressed air to frequently remove all shavings. Facing head tubes and bottom bracket shells is slightly scary but very satisfying.😊

Hi. I enjoy your videos very much. Just a word, from an old guy, regarding 26 inch wheels on road bikes. I believe that Tony Oliver started this trend in his book “Touring Bikes”. His rationale was that anywhere in the world you’d be able to source a mountain bike tyre. 700c or 27” may be harder to find….Regards from the UK…..👍

I think you're making good, relevant content, and your demeanor is excellent. I hope your channel grows and grows. I'd say this non-publicly if I could -- beware of turning your facing and reaming cutters counter clockwise; unlike taps and dyes, they only want to work clockwise in the cutting direction. They will dull a lot faster if they are turned the opposite direction. Just looking out for a brother -- you can verify this easily. Cheers!

Excellent episode with an impressive bike. I’m jealous. I’m also a fan of Paul‘s components brakes and the engineering ideas to make adjustments easier and simple. The rusty fork stem was a real surprise especially for such an expensive custom hand build frame. One wouldn’t expect someone would forget to apply at least a thin layers of grease before assembly.

Those old "All Rounders" are very cool. Grant still makes interesting bikes, and seems to be doing very well., unlike some of the main stream brands. I have an old Chris King on an old Bontrager that's always been pretty bound up., yikes, I better tear into it!. I would have chucked the old headset, and now you GOTTA pull the bottom bracket and get some Frame Saver in there.

I bought a Chris King Royal Navy blue 7075 aluminum headset back in 2011. I don't think it's been greased since; if it has, it's only been once. I paid 💰250.00🍁 tax plus lab. No issues 🤘🤘

That's a marvelous bike and a mic-drop display of some of the finest bike parts! I'd be showing that thing off every chance I got. There's "bike people" that know and have a pretty good idea of what you've got going on there- and then there's "bike dorks" that *understand* what you've got going on there. Not just "a nice bike with nice parts," but a 753/531 Waterford built Rivendell All-Rounder with a "game over" build. Personally, I don't think you made enough of how special everything is- yeah- you've got Paul touring cantis- But they're Paul touring cantis with green anodized adjustment heads. And green anodized "extra fancy" Moon Unit cable yokes. Best of luck on the tour! I appreciate what you've done with the headset adjustment video, the tour of the bike and the great ideas of what to shoot for in other builds!!!

Especially when you have pitting and can't remove all the rust, a RUST NEUTRALIZER like Loctite EXTEND converts remaining rust molecules to a hard, inert material.

Not sure what you’re asking here. “Bodge”? Do you mean the decaleur (bracket that holds the bag)? This one is from Velo Orange. There are many variations on this through history.

I didn’t watch all this video yet but my guess is you were fixing a non existent problem with the cutter, and the stiffness could and should have been avoided by using some oil as routine maintenance. If the high quality headset is so accurately made that it requires extra precision facing to avoid binding then perhaps it’s TOO precisely made?
