I never tire of listening to the original Carter Family. The sound reaches deep. The pictures are great, but sad in a way. AP was estranged from Sara at the time and it shows in the pictures. As I recall the story, they never got back together.
@martaacosta441510 ай бұрын
I could never understand why they didn’t get back together. I know Sara was involved with A.P.’s cousin, Coy Bays, but there was a period of several years when Sara was living at her parents’, Coy Bays was living in California with his family, and A.P. was living with his and Sara’s children. A.P. And Sara were only a few miles from each other in Virginia, and attempts were made to reconcile. Why it didn’t happen, either no one knew or those who knew didn’t want to tell. In any case, Sara did marry Coy Bays after being divorced from A.P. for several years.

I was very sad. AP was an akward guy but without his ambition the group would have never happened. The story is he fell in love with Sara's voice before he first laid eyes on her. @@martaacosta4415

Maybelle played a C chord formation and moved the capo around to play in different keys. A and A flat were common on many songs because it fit Sara's vocal range.

Love the way The Carter Family can take a very basic run-of-the-mill 12-bar blues and tweak it one way or another to make it unique and special. This one is a fine example of that. If I'm not mistaken it was not written by A.P., but is one they learned from a contemporary whose name I can't remember so its hard to say if the "original" added the fifth measure (which transformed it into a "13-bar blues") to get the Hallelujah in there, or whether the Carters introduced that. Same with the short E-minor chord at the end of the third line. But another example of how they modify the basic blues form to great effect is Bear Creek Blues which was written by A.P. and which on the instrumental breaks they play as a straightforward 12-bar blues, but on the vocals they make the first line 5 bars instead of 4, then the same with the second line and the third. I really like the way John Prine covers this song, and introduces electric guitar which I imagine some people will say is blasphemous, but I think the Carter Family would approve. Of course, he also changes the line "One drink of that water, you'll be drinkin' it all the time" to "One drink of that water, you'll stay drunk all the time". That they might not approve of !!

Richard Sleep I first heard this on a thrift store-bought 78 rpm shellac disc (cost 25 cents). It was 1969 and it sounded timeless then and now in 2020, it still sounds timeless as it did in 1930's. The Carter Family is timeless and for all times. Class is class.

@@carmenhardy2629 Greetings to Carmen. Sold my 78's via auction fliers of Joel Slotnikoff in St.LouisCity twenty years ago. He took 20% and I received almost exactly $20.00 per disc. Had most on cassette tape, alas, no tape player anymore. I had 78's of blues, R&B vocal groups, Hillbilly Boogie,Bluegrass, Classic Country, Cajun and Western Swings, original rock'n'roll/rockabilly. Played all of these styles with talented Ozark musicians, 1971 to 2010 at picnics, school houses, parties, etc. and the sacred singing at churches & the other places. Played with men and women as good as anyone recording professionally on my vocals, harmony to my singing and guitar playing, plus steel guitar, fiddle, banjo, string bass fiddle, mandolin, piano and accordian. I am 79 now, a widower (high school sweetheart & wife of 54 years died in 2015) sold the homestead, divided the money between my four children and live in St.Louis City in a large room in my oldest daughter's house in St. Louis City. Until the pandemic, I got around all over the city exploring.Now as a prime target of the virus due to advanced age, I am pretty much out of the picture and I don't like to drive so much anymore in traffic (lots of crazy drivers out on the highway). By the way, shellac records are extremely brittle and break very easily. Best wishes to you. RJS

@@carmenhardy2629 Greetings to Carmen. I had a small collection of 78 rpm records. Started in 1969 with Married Girl Single Girl by the Carter Family. I found the records at 2nd hand stores, used furniture stores, and some at a radio station in West Plains, Mo. and some at "First Monday" 13 acre flea market in Weatherford, Texas. 78 rpm shellac records are bulky, big to store, and extremely brittle and breakable; however, they held recordings back then not available in any other format and 78 rpm records because of their size and speed and groove depth have the greatest fidelity/sound reproduction of all. I collected blues, hillbilly boogie, cajun, r&b vocal groups, western swing, 1920's jazz, recordings. I sold them through a consignment auction some years ago. After the 20% taken by the consignment fee, I made almost exactly $20.00 per record. I had taped them on cassette, but no longer have a way to play the tapes. sincerely, RJS

@Pickinbuddy Because of the attack on the Pearl Harbor the Life Magazine decided not to publish the story and the pictures. But if I'm not mistaken, the Life Magazine published an article in 1991 "The Ballad of A. P. Carter", and I think they also published those pictures. Anyway, the pictures were also uploaded to the internet, so everybody could see them.

@ Dullborn, docsavage: if you want to play this song like the carter you have to tune your guitar 1/2 tone lower and play the C position (it's a B song). But in addition you have to pay attention to the rhythmic asymmetry at the 3rd verse (and the first verse too, when they sing "oh yes").
