RIVER STREAM (18 months old) Nature Aquarium

Update of my home tank 'River Stream' designed for livestock (mostly for Ramirezi German Blue) where I was able to breed them successfully in a different tank. This layout is doing 18 months since it was scaped and it is one of the most enjoyable tanks to keep. It doesn't demand so much maintenance, of course being really stable and matured, it turns the maintenance much easier and we can enjoy the aquascape without being worried in have the hands wet all the time. I hope you enjoy it!
Full setup:
ILA Europe 90x60x45h cm, 2x Twinstar EU 900SA III, old soil with Aquario root tabs, background light by the Lightground, gravel by Prodibio G Series, OASE Biosmaster 600 thermo filter with inline pressurized CO2.
AQUAFLORA plants:
Eleocharis sp minima, Juncus repens, Pogostemon helferi, Cyperus helferi, Eleocharis acicularis, Lilaeopsis Novea-Zealandiae, Anubias barteri var nana mini, Anubias barteri var nana mini mini, Anubias barteri var 'Paxing', Bolbitis heudelotii, Microsorum pteropus 'Petit', Eleocharis vivipara, Eriocaulon sp 'Dong Ha', Helanthium bolivianum 'magdalenensis', Helanthium tenellum, Potamogeton gayi, Cryptocoryne Willisii, Cryptocoryne lutea 'Hobbit', Cryptocoryne parva, Hydrocotyle tripartita and Vesicularia montagnei 'Christmas moss'
Livestock by AquaNaturae:
Otocinclus affinis, Nannostomus beckfordi, Corydoras pygmaeus, Garra flavatra, Rasbora Brigittae and Clithon corona. Very soon I will add in this tank my Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi German Blue breeding. Unfortunatelly the parents passed away due to their age (24 months) but since I have breed them, the kids will be moved to this tank very soon.

The appearance of this tank after growing out is amazing. I love the way all the plants have mixed together to produce a beautiful and natural aquascape.

Yes. Now I need to rescape this one to move most of them to this tank. I need a bit more of space. However I have them all in a 100L tank and they get along very nice.

This tank is one of the best creations by you. It's wonderful how you have chosen and executed all rosette style plants and made it into a mind blowing scape and also a beautiful home for fishes as well. I must let you know that I have learnt aquascaping from this tank. I'm making my own share of mistakes, learning, getting up and going again. Whether I become a better aquascaper or not(although I want to be with your guidance), this comment will stay as a tribute to you, to let you know you have inspired me and many others... You are a legend...

To run CO2 you must have medium light and then fertilize a bit your plants. If you don't do it and since photosynthesis will be higher, the plants can get a bit stunt.

Glad you hid the equipment and got a surface skimmer for the filter inlet

The biggest problem before was the filter with 13mm hoses... Since I changed the filter to Oase Biomaster 600, I could change the lily pipes as well and remove all other equipment. 😉

The Ramirezis aren't in this tank anymore. They passed away due to their age. I will add the breeding in this tank after I rescape it.

It's difficult to other to understand how the layout will evolve by looking to it in the first months, this was always the plan for this scape and was already trimmed a few times to remove volume. 😉

Did you glue the microsorum and anubias? They look very nice and neatly arranged. My problem is microsorum, anubias and bucephalandra always change position after waterchange and siphoning. I didn't glue those on the hardscape before.

Yes. I intend to do it before summer because I need more space inside to move the breeding of Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi to this tank. I have 10 to move in here.

Good day Filipe, what was the longest and shortest total lifespan of the adult rams that got to enjoy this beautiful scape as one of their homes?

Hi Grant. They came from previous scape, probably already with 8 months old. They last in this new home from 12 to 18-19 months. It's all about if they are sexual active and if they keep spawning. If they do, usually we keep them from 12 to 18 months, otherwise they will get close to 24 months if they are in good water conditions.

This is a masterpiece, looks fantastic. I'm currently trying to create something similar but what I cant seem to get right is how do you stop the soil overlapping onto the sand/gravel without using rocks to stop it. Is it a case of putting the sand slightly on top of the soil and then using the plants to stop it from coming over? so do you basically plant into the sand that has soil underneath it? Also what would be the maximum or ideal depth of the sand/gravel thats put over the soil?

More or less that... I also use large gravel over the sand to prevent the soil to come over. Of course the plants will hold it too and since I don't have shrimps in the tank, it turns that tast a bit easier.

Die Pflanzen haben sich wahnsinnig toll entwickelt! 👍 Allerdings ist dadurch auch der freie Schwimmraum Für die Fische viel kleiner geworden und die Schmetterlinge sind verschwunden ... 😒... Man könnte jetzt wahrscheinlich auch nur noch ein Pärchen einsetzen ........ 🙄

I have 10 to add in this tank... But not before I rescape it! The Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi died due to the age, we can't keep them forever... I would wish, but since they were sexual active, that reduced their life. I have the breeding and I will place them in this tank after rescape it.

I have a mix.. . From pomice stones, AquaRio media and old media that I was using on my filters since 2010...it was moved from filter to filter because in this OASE Biomaster 600 I have 4 trays full of it.

well Filipe, with that much java fern, maybe you are the next Takashi Amano. What happened to the pinnatifida? and how do you keep BBA off the plants?

Hi Riley, I never used Hygrophila pinnatifida in this scape... Maybe you are doing any confusion with previous scape. I barely have BBA on my scapes since I use a very lean fertilization routine, I don't have so much livestock in my tank and I don't feed them too much.

It's explained in the video's description... They passed away due to their age and since they were sexualy active, that reduced their life. Rams don't last longer, 24...max 36 months and they will die. Fortunately I have the breeding and I will add them in this tank after rescape it.
