I never in my life thought I would see a flathead catfish this big. Maybe the dam stories are true haha. It may not count, but I just feel blessed to have put eyes on it. This thing was a freak!

Beautiful Giant! One in a million day and I do respect and relate to your afterthoughts. The beauty of this video is seeing the live release of a very healthy 70+lb. Flathead. 76.5 lbs. has been the record Flathead in my home state of Ohio since 1979. Even without measurements I have a great mental image of what a state record fish might look like.

@stevesmith4181

I was born in Ohio but I've lived in Texas since I was 4, although I visit family in Ohio when I can and we fish the paylakes alot. My favorite one, my Dad always fished, and I gratefully got to fish w him alot before he passed away, recently closed down and is now a public catch and release spot, always been known as Beaver Lake. I'll miss fishing the tournaments and for tagged fish there! Sum 70+'s have come outta there and I know other paylakes near Springfield hold sum 70-80+ blues and flatheads so I'm surprised that the state record is only in the 70-80# range, with the Ohio River being responsible for alotta those big fish that were stocked in those paylakes from my understanding. I believe I heard they recently put a stop to catching them outta the river to stock in paylakes. I dont care what anyone says about paylakes fishing, I think the shits fun as hell! Can't wait til this summer, after my daughter graduates high school and we head up to Ohio to visit my Mom/Stepdad and family and my cousins and I can hit sum paylakes again!!! Fish on!!!

Gonna fish right below this real small waterfall for cats/carp today.Went yesterday got 3,3 different species. Cat,carp and a 3 lb Small mouth.Was bored, waiting on target specie,pick up small combo,tied a spinner on,wham! Chunky smallie about 3 lb.Third cast with the spinner,thought I foul hooked a carp,until it rocketed into space.Love when they jump like that.. Another fine River Certified production..Thanks the fourth time for this Epic Iowa Flattie vid...

Snagging sucks. People have many theories as to how foul-hooking a fish happens, but forget about all those theories because here is how snagging occurs most of the time: When a fish goes to attack the lure the rush it, then the hook gets caught in its mouth as usual. What happens a lot of the time is that the fish will shake, bend and jump trying to spit the hook. When the fish flex’s to spit the hook, they often snag themselves even while the hook is still in their mouths. So the tail or back end of the fish flex’s enough to get its tail or back end snagged on one of the treble hooks in its mouth and it pulls the lure from the mouth and the hook is now set in its back en$pd. It’s hard to describe this process in text, but I think a lot of you will understand what I am talking about here. In my books that catfish should count! The one foul-hooked in the belly. Was probably hooked properly first and snagged himself is all. So that’s how foul-hooking often occurs. It can also happen on a crank bait where the front treble is in the mouth and due to flipping around the back hook can get caught just past the gills into their “shoulder” and that’s how another foul hook happens. First time visitor to your channel, so far so good! That thumbnail pulled me in to your videos channel. If you have other videos I like where you are hopefully going after and catching multiple other species then I may sub even! I can’t stand a channel that is focused on catching one species only. Especially largemouth bass. A lot of channels focus on those only and I can’t stand it! We need variety! Walleye, trout, Muskie, pike, catfish and yes even carp are all good when the fishermen goes after all of those species changing it up often depending on location and conditions. Thanks for your video!

Glad you enjoyed the videos! It's hard to tell how the fish got hooked but all that stuff is definitely a possibility. Ita tough to tell what you didn't see happen. I fish for a variety of species, but catfish are my favorite. No bass fishing here, except some smallmouth on occasion. Thanks for watching!

Now I know the baitfeeder spinning reel can somewhat handle a fish like that. I rather use spinning reels vs baitcasters even though baitcasters are smaller profile and look better. And too many baitcasters with right hand retrieve. Awesome catch though. Looking forward to break record for MN.
