Күн бұрын

‪@thewonderingelectrician‬, ‪@SideTrailAdventures‬ and Dirt Dobber join me on a Kayak Capmping quest to paddle the entire Deep River. 120 miles, 10 dams, long lakes, and rugged terrain stand in the way. This is a special river to me as my 7th great grandfather settled on these banks before the founding of this country. Come along and join us as we embark on the adventure that is the Deep River Expedition. This would be a seven day Kayak Camping journey that flows straight through the heart of North Carolina. This is a trip that did not disappoint.

Nice to meet you. Perhaps our sixth great grandparents knew each other. Mine was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of These United States, and the Bill of Rights; the only man to sign all three documents. He was also the last signers of the Declaration to die. He built the Erie Canal and the B&O Railroad. I guess you could say he was pretty instrumental in the success of the early years of our nation. His name was Charles Carroll of Carrollton. He got kind of sideways of Andrew Jackson because of his opposition to the American Indian Relocation Act, and the Trail of Tears. Jackson once said that he'd shoot him dead if he weren't so close to dying on his own. Charles Carroll had also criticised Jackson for the massacre of British troops retreating under a white flag of surrender a day after the end of the War of 1812. Jackson claimed that he didn't know, but several people, including the message runner who brought the news to him, said he new very well, and that a thirst for blood and a desire to make himself look like a war hero spurred him to commit one of the worst war crimes in American history (though it has never been recognized as such). I really don't know why the heck he's on our $20 dollar bill. When you learn a little more about him, he's not exactly a shining star. Anyway, it's wonderful to find someone whose family has memories of roots as far back as mine, and who kayaks as well!

when is the next one out Pete? i was at Highfalls yesterday. been a couple of years since I have been there. The way I used to access the river there is locked up tighter than San Quentin. i had to go down the road to the Methodist church and access it from a path at the end of their graveyard.
