Welcome to Riversdale! This historic mansion was built in the early 1800s and is now open to the public for tours and events. The Riversdale Historic Society presents what life was like not only for the high society families that owned the property, but the people and families they enslaved as well.
Riversdale has a unique advantage when it comes to uncovering the experiences of enslaved people living in the United States. This is thanks to the diary of Adam Francis Plummer, who was taught to read and write by a pastor. Adam's diary was continued and later published by his daughter, Nellie Arnold Plummer. It's titled, "Out of the Depths, or, the Triumph of the Cross".

It is hard to hear about enslaved workers - but important to be reminded. It is too easy to just blow past it, and as these comments suggest, some people still need to be reminded just how much it was a part of the foundation on which we now live.

Why not just call them "servants". They served.

Facts are not politics. Let truth be told and just acknowledge it. And, no slaves are not the same as servants. Slaves were bought and sold, couldn’t change jobs, couldn’t learn to read and write by law, and couldn’t even keep their own children at times. Yes, it is a harsh set of facts, but we can acknowledge the sad facts while still enjoying the beauty of the house, architecture and furnishings. We should also acknowledge that the lady of the house had very few rights at that time either, and likely suffered the misery of involuntary childbirth many times over in an era before birth control. Yes, there was quite a bit of emphasis on the role of the enslaved persons here, maybe unexpected for some watchers, and a bit too much of the emphasis of the house tour, but he certainly was right to acknowledge it. Every society has its share of injustice and beauty, this is not just an American situation, it happened since the beginning of time in different forms.

There is a vast difference between being enslaved and being a servant who could leave the job. It's important not to conflate the two.
