That's not a smoke detector. Otherwise it would not be switchable. It's the mounting base for that light, but the light doesn't fit the space

it's very easy to secure a sliding door from the inside with a bar. With a key lock sliding door the locking mechanism is pretty easy to bypass unless there's a bar..

As a youngster here in Kansas, some small towns would have a post in the alley behind the house. Most had 1 hook to hang a pail on, some had 2 hooks. You would throw edible garbage/leftovers no one would eat, into a pail and hang it on the hook in the alley nearly every day. Once a day, pig farmers would come around and collect the waste to feed to their pigs. Slop buckets are what everyone called them. I remember as a kid having to haul the bucket out to the alley and hang it on the hook in the late evening or ridiculously early in the morning.

Thank you for this. Growing up my grandparents had one and was told "I don't know" when I asked. I have some of one in the back of my house, and now I know. Very informative. Thank you again.

Gotta check out 1 N Clarens in Old Town Alexandria. If you look at the Zillow listing it only shows the in law suite/guest house, not the main house. The in law suite is a cabin, which itself is neat, but the main home was designed by an electrical engineer with a modernist architect. It's all steel and glass and built like a sky scraper

They still have these in Sun City, California. It’s a 55 + community. It was out of service ,clean and I used to play hide and seek with my cousins and that was my favorite hiding spot until the latch got stuck. I was found 11 hrs later. Lol. I won the game. lol. Now I’m all fucked up. Jk. I’m good.

I used to live in a house like that not too far from Alexandria. Same situation, where an addition was built over the back yard. The original stairs from the basement to the outside remained but were under a new concrete slab, and the space was used as a storage area. I learned the history the day I realized there was an outside porch light over the door into the storage area that had never been removed.

I don’t think they were yours, unless you were alive a long time ago. Remember also that building these buildings employed a lot of people - often (not sure about this one) they were built as a form of relief to wage workers by providing employment when the private sector couldn’t or wouldn’t. Your point about whether we should use taxes to build with aesthetics in mind, or only to the level necessary to achieve the intended purpose and no more, is an interesting one that has been debated a lot over the centuries. I think having buildings of beauty is important - and a sign of respect for the populace (including wage earners). But that assumes that we can also afford justice. I think we can, but I agree that is not the way things seem to be handled in the U.S. - but that is a story that has been going on for a long time.
