My father worked there as a nurse until he had to retire due to going blind. I used to hang out at the cafeteria up that hill with the patients in the 70’s as a kid while my dad worked. My mom also worked there as a health care worker. Both of my parents have passed my father died Sept 2, 2022. This place was a huge part of my childhood. It taught me to learn how to respect mentally ill people

I've worked here a lot in the film industry and spent a lot of time in the crease clinic, east lawn, and the exterior or the west lawn building. During the day it's not so bad but walking through the halls of the crease clinic at night with only a headlamp is pretty creepy. I walked through the 4th floor at night by myself and one of the old radiators in one of the rooms randomly switched on while I was walking by (it sounded like a light switch being turned on) and it freaked me out. Most of the buildings have asbestos in them still and some of the paint contains led which makes it quite a health hazard. Thanks for making This video I found it really interesting !!

Heya Glenn. I was a patient at Centre Lawn in early 2009 for a few months. Dont worry, i'm ok now haha. Anyway my only complaint about the place was everyone was after my cigarettes, and they would often ask for puffs, I didnt like the idea of sharing so I would smoke it till I was satisfied and give them the rest. Oh yeah, being woken up at 7:15 AM every morning sucked too. Can't say I miss the place too much.

My moms friend took some pics of this place, she took one and then took a few steps back to take a bigger pic, the two where takin seconds apart. In the second picture there was something peeking out from a column, I zoomed way in on the pic and it was a clear image of what appeared to be a priest with a faint misty aura around it. It was creepy! And I'm going there today to take some pics!

Some guy posted a video a while back as a drone view of the location, wouldn't mind making this into an episode with Interviews with staff and patients. Maybe get him to share some footage or shoot something new, Riverview is constantly evolving, still currently owned in a way by Hollywood north and the city of Coquitlam, the original building at west Lawn is in serious need of repair or demolition, would be nice if they put in an effort to showcase our history rather than tear it down for condo land :(

Glen Ferguson Cool. You may want to contact the Riverview Horticulture Centre Society, a number of the gals that organize the arborist walks that I and others lead around the site are former nurses / employees of the hospital. I have a couple of grainy pictures of the museum display from Treefest 2010 which I believe is the last time it was open to the public before getting mothballed. Shoot me a PM and we can discuss if you wish.

Here's a quick question, for those who have seen this video...do we preserve our heritage in B.C. Canada. or destroy it from existence, buildings like this are torn down to make room for valuable real estate, do we preserve our history?? buildings like this in Northumberland England are preserved for future generations to discover. What are your thoughts. ?
@MrGlen1965

For those Interested you can have my personal Email address, lets stop tearing down history, It doesn't remove the memories, chatted with patients who cheered when PHI was finally reduced to rumble, now they feel it was better left up to preserve their memory of the treatment they had to endure there.

The history tells an ugly story, mostly of our ignorance at the time. I worked here in the 60's. It stunk big time, literally. urine.. It was no less than shocking on my first entry. We didn't see "these people" in the streets in those days which is why I was so shocked. Fortunately, many have been able to manage their illness and live in society today, as a result of this place progressively closing and advancing treatments...but the need is still there, maybe more than ever. No. they are not haunted. The scary part was the living within those walls, (the poor souls!) and the treatments of the day, at that time, and. of course, the history. They are very old with VERY thick, disintegrating concrete walls and small metal framed window panes. Mostly ..they stunk. They need to be torn down. This property is much to valuable to BC taxpayers as a useful property. We bought it!!! We need to use it. Start somewhere..once again..........with kindness and true understanding.... and education! New structures, new jobs, and hope for people who suffer.

+twiter bee Thanks for your comments. It's nice to see someone on here that respects the memories of those who suffered at this hospital. My father's younger brother, Loren, had down syndrome and because of the shame brought on by ignorance, along with a lack of support at home, he was institutionalized here. It was during the depression so it was difficult for my grandmother to visit him. When she did, she would bring my father along. Shortly after moving to the hospital, Loren became ill with dysentery and within a year he passed away My dad was very young at the time, but the memories of those visit lived with him well into his '90s.

twiter bee and once "this place" closed the vast majority of patients were released to the streets with no family, no coping abilities or relationship skills etc. A vast majority of addicts in the downtown east side at one point were former residents of riverview. There are still many former patients that are now addicts on the street.

is all true as is said to have happened in the mental hospital? The films made about the hospital there must be something behind them, as the man who "owned" the hospital in the movie. Has he been around for real? Is the hospital in the same place? Is there someone I can contact me for additional information about the hospital? It may have not only a myth, for example, in the movies, ok they ahr brainwashed people there and so on. What's his name who owns it in real life? Does it look the same as before, haunting it in the hospital?

One must consider the fact that it was originally an insane asylum, and truly at the lowest of times for care and understanding for the mentally ill. Historic perhaps, but not in a good way. We own this property and it should remain mental health and support services but not in these buildings. It is valuable property and sits alone like a little village. It could be a nice place for treatment(s). The need is horrendously high, although one must consider the fact that it was and is impossible to treat an active addict, and that is much more often the case of today. especially when one tries to keep the 'clean' and effectively treat psychiatric conditions. Human rights stepped in, years ago, and fractured this previous system. A much more modern and humane system needs to be created. It floors me that we care so little for our own,keeping them safe and keeping others safe from them, when needed. Does it cost any more than handing out welfare and dealing with public crime and drug problems..maybe yes, But, we are supposed to be civilized and caring.

It is not man's soul, haunting, it now haunts in the mental hospital, which it does. But in the Bible it says that the human soul does not remain on earth without going to heaven or hell. There are spirits from hell demons and so on. Those of you who think it's interesting should do more research on the Bible and what it says. Everything the Bible says is true, and will happen!
