What does Rivian's "Max Pack" really give you for your money, and how does that compare and scale, are we getting ripped off?? (no)

I am in line for a max pack. I have watched your videos and Kyle’s videos and you are the only ones really covering this so i appreciate you both. After taking everything into consideration i still think the max pack makes sense for me. I live in texas and a 4 to 5 hour drive is my normal drive time when visiting family and friends across the state. I especially think the time saved charging in the sweet spot of the charging curve is significant enough driving those distances. Also, i agree with you that people have gotten so used to Rivian being the best deal out there that as soon as they do something that is average, people are disappointed and in my thoughts probably unfair to a company trying to survive in a very difficult industry.

I have the Rivian R1T Dual Performance Max. It’s goes farther, not by much, not worth the money by numbers, but still goes the farthest. So works great for me. Thanks to you and Kyle for all you hard work…. Amazing Info. Thank you so much! Oh yeah, fast as hell for me. Off-road has yet to be tested by me.

I just took delivery last month, of a Max pack dual motor non performance version. (Lease deal to get the tax credit). I use my truck for work, drive average 200 miles a day. I only have to use about 60% of the battery for that, within 80% and 20%, which should be good for the health of the battery long term since I recharge almost daily. I'll have the option to 100% charge for longer trips. In my car this Max pack makes sense. I wish it would charge faster, but feel it is still a good fit for my purpose. Love it

I waited and waited for the Max Pack. Sadly my reservation isn't as old as yours, so I'm one (two?) price bucket up from your pricing at 73k base + 5k for dual performance + $16k for the max pack. I agree with pretty much everything you said. Do I wish it had been a bigger capacity? yes. Does it hurt that they charged that much more (large pack would have been $6k for me, so it was a $10k markup) for that little additional capacity? yes. But I expect given that this is brand new battery chemistry that they've only just begun to stretch its abilities and we'll be in for some additional benefits over the coming couple years that the large and standard packs on the old chemistry may not get... whereas they have gotten some boosts already over the last couple years. I've had the R1T for about 2 weeks now, it feels good to be back in a pickup, even if it is one that is significantly larger than I would have liked. (I had two Chevy S10s back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I'd LOVE an electric truck in that size!)

Very nice video. I would love to see some off road testing comparing the dual motor to quad to see the actual difference.

Like you I'm an original order holder and waited 4.5 years to receive the discounted max pack for $7K. Didn't realize I was getting the Max for that price as I truly expected to pay $10K at delivery. Glad I waited. I'm not concerned with Kyle's analysis as the discount, IMO, negates the argument.

I think the point you are missing, is at current prices, the Max Pack is very expensive for what you get. I have an R1T Large pack and agree with you...we got a good value for what we paid. Would I pay $90 or $100K for a new one? Doubtful.

My R1T is now 1 week old (dual-motor, max pack, 21” Wheels, Limestone, Ocean Coast) I got the old pricing which makes me feel at least a little better about the somewhat disappointing max pack. My main concern so far is about what seems to be excessive vampire drain of 2-4 kWh per night. I've tried everything I can think of (no proximity lock, alarm off, bluetooth off, wifi off, shipping mode, etc.) The nights have been very cold, around 20F, but the battery temperature in the morning is never below 54F, does that mean the truck is maintaining battery temperature overnight? Does anyone have any suggestions? My second concern is that the truck is quite loud at about 30-35 mph and also when coming to a stop. Does anyone else experience this with the dual-motor?

Working on vampire drain myself, will do a video when I kinda get things figured out. Last night I had .34 MPH of loss which is way better than I had a week ago with everything turned on.... FWIW go set up a trial account with these folks, will give you fantastic detail on what's going on: www.electrafi.com/

Appreciated. I think I am going large and waiting until there is a software that offers what they want max pack to be. 6% will be gone in a year with battery deg. What are we even talking about? Only sorta makes sense if you have pre hike pricing.

As a consumer, I'm not asking for something for free. I want to actually hit 400 miles when I drive reasonably :) And paying $10k extra seems like a fair price for that, if Rivian actually delivers on the promise.

I think I could get the EPA rated range if I pre-conditioned the cabin & battery and drove 65, but is that reasonable? We are on a road trip in Texas right now, and in West TX the I-10 has an 80mph limit! One man's Reasonable is another's so-slow-big-rigs-will-run-you-down :-P

I recently traded my 2022 Quad for a 2023 PDM Max Pack...thus far (~1,500 miles) I am very pleased. Overall, it seems like it's better put together than our 22. Question...so my "range" estimator states 389 (22" wheels). On a long road trip this past week, we got 2.47 mi/kwh which is pretty great in my opinion. This is at ~76 mph @~84 degrees. So if we take 141.5 kwh usable times 2.47 mi/kwh = ~350 miles on the highway. What efficiency are you seeing with your Max Pack? Thank you
@MotorsportUnplugged
@MotorsportUnplugged 12 күн бұрын
ABRP now has integration with Rivian where it starts plotting out your real world efficiency. So far we're looking like 2.29m/kwh, and that's with our AT tires and the RTT on the back which I'm too lazy to take off :-P

A person just needs to be comfortable paying $10k (todays pricing) for a best-case 58 extra miles over the large battery but understand that you might only get an additional 20-25 miles - maybe even less in the cold. People can do what they want with their 10-grand but for me I can think of many better ways to spend that money that offer more value. Hopefully folks don't finance that extra $10k over 5 years where it ends up costing closer to $12k. Ugh.
@MotorsportUnplugged
@MotorsportUnplugged 6 ай бұрын
Well let's be clear, it's not simply "a person", it's "a person who is already willing to shell out at least $79,000 for an EV truck, probably more with some options". The question then is adding $10K more or not, ~13% more or not, for a 10-15% increase in range/efficiency. We could also consider the other end of ownership, after say 5 years when the battery has lost a few % of capacity, the Max is going to be still going strong and have a higher resale value than a Large showing it's age.
@markmonroe7330
@markmonroe7330 6 ай бұрын
@@MotorsportUnplugged We have no idea how "strong" the Max Pack will be going after 5 years compared to the large battery. We have no idea what the range difference will be between the two after 5 years as well. For all we know today, the Max batteries might actually degrade *worse* and the range could be even less than the Large after 5 years. How much of that $10k (or $12k if you financed it) will you recoup on resell? My honest guess is that the trade difference after 5 years between the two will be close to zero or well under a $1000. Rivian hasn't even been selling trucks for 5 years so we really have no data as to how their depreciation in general will look after 5-7-10 years and 150,000-200,000 miles. As I said, people can spend their money on whatever they want - no judgment here.

You're right it's significantly unknown until time passes and experience builds, but both cell types are Samsung, and both packs appears to have the same 95.7% usable capacity. This information was gleaned from the EPA filings and other testing, best summary I've seen is here: www.batterydesign.net/rivian-max-battery-pack/

@@kashelectronica7541 Dare I say, not "big" but "realistic and predictable" assumptions? Lets be honest, Rivian has only been delivering vehicles into actual production for *barely* over 2 years now, more specifically Sept of 2021. Based upon their actual, documented and current earnings statement, I would say there is a better than 50/50 gamble that Rivian wont even exist in its current form in 2030. Good luck with service and parts if that happens and dare say, your resell value.

As Kyle pointed out in the Out of Spec test..you only get the "better" Max range on the first charge. If your road tripping, Max pack charges or added miles at the same rate. So if you are only charging to maybe 80% on the road, Max pack is a waste of $$$.
@MotorsportUnplugged
@MotorsportUnplugged 6 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how much I buy Out of Spec's "10% Challenge" test honestly, it's too quick for the Max Pack to have much of a chance to soak up extra miles within the 'fat' part of the curve. Sounded like they were about to release another video with a more extensive side-by-side charging test but...no sign yet, maybe they are still talking with Rivian trying to sort things out.
@HarveyPayne
@HarveyPayne 6 ай бұрын
I realize OoS is trying to come up with standard tests to compare different vehicles and trying to represent “real life” scenarios to compare. The 10% challenge misses the mark for me. My test would be “how long does it take to add 150 real world miles?” This is about 2 hours down the road and time for a break anyway. The real physical test considers the distance between chargers and your load - this is a truck after all. My next charging opportunity is 120 miles away and I’m pulling a not so aerodynamic cargo trailer. I need to charge deep. The deeper you go, the slower it gets. I don’t think my X can make it unless I drive at 50 mph. Say I want to drive a more reasonable 60 mph. How long will I need to charge in the max vs the large? We have the R1T Dual Max Performance on 21” because range is important to me and we have two different trailers we pull with it.

@@HarveyPaynehow has Towing been with the Max pack? I'm in the same persona as you, I look forward to stretching my legs every 2 hrs. Can the Max go 2 hrs with towing?
@HarveyPayne
@HarveyPayne 5 ай бұрын
@@baselsalam Yes. Here's info on our lastest loop. Our longest leg is over three hours and yes, we are ready to stop for a break. We basically take I-8 from San Diego over to Gila Bend, then up around Phoenix, up I-17, to Prescott. On the way back we take the direct route from Prescott to Quartzsite, across to Palm Springs, then over the mountain back to San Diego county. It is 440 miles going there and 390 coming back. The reason we use this loop is because the R1T just can't quite pull the 150 miles from Quartzsite to Prescott with its 4500' elevation gain even when we charge to full. Well, MAYBE we could make it with 12% to spare -- I just don't have the guts to try. No place to charge out there at all so I don't want to get stuck. So, we go around on I-8 because it is such a better road than I-10. On our current loop of about 830 miles we go about 2.5 hours to the first charger about 120 miles away (66% of battery). Next stop is 127 miles and is only 2:16 (79.2% battery). The next leg we only go 50 miles in 54 minutes so we can stop at the chepaer RAN station (31.8% battery). The previous stop was an expensive charge so we only stop long enough to make this next part and to get a date shake. :) Our next two legs are short -- 90 miles in 1:37 (63.5%) and 55 miles in an hour (46.2%). These last two legs are climbing up a few thousand feet, most of which are that last 55 miles. Heading back we have our longest leg, That one is 150 miles and takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes (70.4%). Not bad considering the first 50 miles or so are on a windy 30 MPH mountain road with snow and ice. The R1T does great. Next leg is 133 miles and 2:26 (71%). Final leg home over the mountain and down the other side -- part way, is 95 miles and takes 2:03 (56%). Again, not bad for twisty windy roads through the mountains. The miles, times, and percent of battery used were from our last trip. The temperatures weren't too cold -- maybe high 20's to actually up in the 80's around Palm Springs I think.

Sadly I can't order a Large or a Max pack Rivian as I live in Europe... But thanks for your update, and I tend to agree with all what you say. I did watch the good Out of spec videos and I really like their 10% challenge normally, but thought straight on, this is a brand new pack compared to a pack that has been out for a long time. We can't compare charging apples for apples just yet as the max pack will still have optimization to go through that the large pack has already had when it comes to charging speed. The capacity test however seems very much valid. And this is where I agree with you. You end up paying quite a bit extra for top performance, and I have no issue with that. Should this just have been a "free" incremental upgrade? Well, maybe, but also they had not delivered the 400+ mile truck as promised... By the end of the day, the max pack delivers more than what your XC60 had in usable capacity as extra capacity compared to the large pack. Best value? don't think so! Worth it? That's up to the individual user. And you know fine well you can camp comfortably an extra night or two with that extra energy, so you'd probably say yes! Despite budgets and available time for producing contents, I was a subscriber to your channel a long time before I subscribed to any of the Out of Spec channels, and I am very much looking forward to follow along on your adventures with your Rivian! But what happened to your nicely modified XC60...?
@twolf2919
@twolf2919 5 ай бұрын
Sorry, but the "paying 80% to get that last 20%" generality just doesn't make sense to me in this context. It is not harder to configure a battery with more cells - provided the battery enclosure still fits the platform, you simply add the cells and you're done. Unless you know that Rivian did *not* have the room to simply add more cells? You said they increased the battery by 6% - so there was at least 6% of extra room down there. The only way your argument makes sense is if they just didn't have space for more cells.

lol, its great for me because I got lower pricing but for the regular pricing um no. Totally undercut yourself there didn't you. Max pack is not what they promised and yes they needed a fake max pack to get you off the books and the real max pack will be worth it but this fake max pack which I call large pack plus is not worth 10k extra. in fact this probably costs them about $1,000 more to build and should just be the new large pack.

I would feel better about it if I knew it would ultimately be the large pack. But for 16K 6% is not a good trade off when you consider value of the vehicle. But if I consider the spent at home charging rather than DC because I had it in the tank. That is helpful. That makes a difference.

I own an R1S dual max performance, selected out of the shop. I believe there is no difference between the dual and dual performance. Its a software limit only; no difference in hardware. Therefore i believe there is no difference between the dual and dual max. Just another software trick like what tesla did with some model S 60 and 75 with the same battery. The R1S has more range than i tolerate between breaks. Definitely nice for towing our trailer being able to get 1.6 mi/kwh average.
