Too focused on the noise differences. Was curious on ride comfort, space in second and 3rd rows. Also speed/power, responsiveness and regenerative braking.

I agree. Especially if the audience is looking for their first EV. Coming from the gas-power supplied power vehicle they may not even notice the noise.

One of the big differences between a gas luxury car and a non luxury car is sound dampening. Windows are double paned as well. Noise is a big deal.

After watching both of your review videos, I’m convinced that the Model X and R1S aren’t direct competitors and they serve different customers. Adventure, off-road, hauling - R1S. People hauling, tech, comfort - Model X. In the Model X’s case, I think a closer competitor would be the EQS SUV or the iX. The R1S doesn’t have a direct competitor. Either way, we need more choices in the EV space and it’s great to see more options.

@@losequis7682 Just curious, what tech in Tesla does Rivian not have that is so important? From my perspecitve, the only thing in my Model X that I would absolutely miss going to Rivian is having the driver door close when I step on the brake. Can't think of much else.

its a myth that the people buying rivians will do any offroading or hauling in such an expensive vehicle, its capabilities fall behind a standard truck but it is a cool toy for those who can afford it.

I have a X Plaid and love it. I have done lots of long road trips and my choice of Teslas somewhat based on the supercharger network. It is totally painless to go on long road trips.

One major MAJOR benefit of rivian are framed doors. SO much better than frameless. Sound better when closing door, doesn’t need the window to slide up and down and no one’s pulling on the window when closing the door.

Interesting about the noise. With the radio on no one would here it. Think you’re being a bit picky. I do own a 2022 Y Performance and am taking delivery of a second Tesla in a few weeks. We have a Model X arriving between December 15-January 19.

I like the Tesla Model X range, quietness and supercharger network, but that $30k price difference is a big deal. Plus Rivian gets the 7500 credit even before the new policy gets rolled out. it would be a very very hard decision.

Not for me! Rivian is the clear winner by miles for this dude... paying 30k more and having to deal with that terrible yoke makes it a non starter. Plus no Musk baggage.

I thought for years about buying the Model X yet just couldn’t pull the trigger. I waited for the refresh yet don’t love the paint/build quality relative to the price and so decided on the Rivian R1S which I get in early 2023. In my test drive I really loved the quality, performance, and capabilities. Interior is super. I guess I’m more of a SUV guy. I’m sure there’ll be some hiccups yet the value is pretty ridiculously good for Rivian. Still want to Model Y for my wife :-). Just my 2 cents.

Rich rebuilds just took his R1s on a road trip… I recommend watching it if you want to road trip. Also consider the battery size vs. range. Translation - lots of time charging…

I think that Tesla will be adding that top down view at some point.. they have the cameras and if they are removing sensors, it will make it so much easier to park. I rented a Polestar 2 with the top down and it's nice to have.. in the model Y, (my daily driver) I am used to the sensors, but could easily get rid of them with the top down view. I agree with your neighbor and Ian.. the sounds are most likely amplified because it is a big box back there. my Y makes more noise if I put the back seats down.. My old S had air shocks, and the would go up and down but made no noise at all.

This is like comparing a 4 runner or other real suv to a minivan. Nothing wrong with each but there's a reason they are geared towards different people and needs. I pick up my R1T in two days. When I test drove it I loved the whine of the motors. Gave a more tactile feel. My M3P is almost too quiet. Just my opinion. To each his/her own

Very nice vehicle. I am a Model Y owner but wish Rivian the greatest success. Competition like this is good for the EV industry and gives EV owners more choice. What’s the R1S range when towing 7,000 lbs though?

I don't like that you're playing down how noisy the model X is. If you drive around without music or whatever (like you were the Rivian) the model X is loud. So loud that anything over 40-ish MPH and you can't even use the car to talk on the phone.

It's also worth noting, that the Rivian doesn't have any antiroll bars front or back , this is adjusted dynamically , this is good and bad. Good in that vehicle platform should remain flatter and more stable. Bad in that extra complexity is introduced into the system , that could give trouble down the road with unreliability, and maybe contribute to that noise , where suspension airbags have to empty a little bit and then fill a little bit keeping the compressor working alot.

You do realize that Elon does not think that way. Not behind closed doors anyway. He is no different than any other mega rich business tycoon. He wants for his business what every business wants - total domination of the market place till they become a true monopoly. As usual throughout history, the only thing preventing that is a competitive market place and rules/ regulations that prevent the bigger fish from eating up the smaller ones.

It was the air compressor... there are two reasons... 1- the car is on auto height adjustment setting and the car kept on adjusting the height... 2- it is possible that one of the air suspension is leaking, the compress kept pumping air into it. For my car, I don't hear the noise on scenario 1... I think it is more like scenario 2.

Honestly, if I own a car specifically made for offroading and it doesn't make any noise, I'd be pretty dissapointed, cuz I won't get that rugged feeling without the noise.

Informative, interesting and fun review! I might suggest putting a level on the floor of the vehicle since the whole point of the feature is to level the vehicle. Few body styles are perfectly parallel with the chassis... for styling sake the body lines may slope a little or a lot. Thank you for your video!

Thanks for a great video. The noise would be issue for me after driving EV's for 10 years (Leaf and Tesla's). I don't like the front styling...headlights do not have the streamline look. The X is much better in styling. Nice to have all the room of the Rivian. Charging is still a problem for everyone except the Supercharger network...not only numbers but reliability. I like the yoke but miss the horn in the middle. Still trying to get use to the turn signals without having to look down. It is especially difficult if you make a u-turn and then have to turn again. Overall the yoke is amazing to be able to see out the windshield.

Amazing review. These are the types of reviews people want to see. Real world reviews are not possible sponsored reviews. My son is thinking about either 1 of these. I am selfishly pushing the R1S because I want to borrow it some times to drive. I saw an R1S for the first time just 2 days ago in Oklahoma. I was driving from Tulsa back to Dallas. I see Rivians all the time now in my area, but not the R1S.

@@pvman2 Once the big car companies get into the EV game Rivian and Lucid will not be able to compete......they will disappear like Hudson, Nash, and DeSoto did in the 1950's......and the cars they sold won't be worth scrap. Bad investments.

@@chadhaire1711 That doesn't exactly say why they are not great vehicles. Personally, I think Tesla is here to stay. I somewhat agree with you regarding the likes of Lucid and Faraday, but Rivian has good investors, decent manufacturing rate, and a contract with Amazon that will generate a significant revenue for a while. Let's wait and see.

@@chadhaire1711 The legacy makers are struggling mightily. It will still take them a few years to catch up, and only a few will make it. In the meantime, Rivian and Lucid have a very good chance to succeed as long as they perform well. Their products are AMAZING, both already offering performance that Tesla doesn’t, which is just incredible. But success as an auto company requires more than great product. We shall see.

To me the two most important issues are first is the company going to be around to get parts. Secondly I bought my vehicle for road trips. This eliminates CCS charging for dependable road trips.

I like the noise in my R1T but I’m coming from a Ram and not another electric vehicle. I don’t miss the purr of my hemi quite as much when my new truck sounds like a space ship when I romp on it.

that noise is definitely the air compressor. its a design flaw - they didnt put enough sound sound and vibration dampening. its in the same location as the R1T but its not a big deal in that vehicle because it outside the cabin so its a miss by their design and testing. the sloshing noise might be water in the door. its a known issue it can collect down at the bottom and theres a drain plug to release it... probably another design flaw

The Rivian's are beautiful. I love everything about them honestly. I bought my Tesla over all other EV options because of the infrastructure though. And it doesn't seem as though that's changing any time soon. Neat trucks, not practical for my use case because of the infrastructure, or lack thereof.

I agree with your friend a open back like in the Rivian or SUV or station wagon there is a sound noise but not in sedans and apparently not in a model X which is open , maybe better motors!?

The Rivian HVAC compressors/fans seem a LOT louder, too, moreso outside than inside.. heard/saw comments about that in other R1T review videos. Interesting that the air suspension compressor is also noisy... maybe some extra noise shrouding can help...

I'm curious if Rivian will emphasize noise reduction, because early Tesla's had major noise issues with under the hood components that they had to eventually address in a similar fashion.

Some drive times for my last "road trip" 2060 km to Germany and back again from this week: Actual Model Y: According to ABRP 20 hours - Actual time with traffic jams and accidents in Germany was 26 hours... Model X 2022 Plaid: 20:25 hours Rivian R1S 180 - hats the largest battery!: 21 hours Aptera Gemini 100kWh: 19:22 hours Model 3 LR 82 kWh: 19:25 hours - will be fun to compare it with the Aptera on real world road trips. Cybertruck Dual Motor: 23 hours Ford F150: 23 hours And just for the fun, with my Fiat 500E from 2021 it would take 26 hours. 😁😁😁

Good review, thanks for posting. Sign me up for the Rivian. I'm a Tesla owner since 2016, currently I have a Model X Long Range with FSD. The only thing that Tesla has over other EVs that in my view is important is the charging network. I would trade my X for an R1S today if I could.

Lexus LX 600 has dual tanks for it's available Active Height Control (AHC) system allows total travel of 5.1 inches to avoid the constant compressor activating. Good comparisons. Expert 3rd row reviews.

Lexus, need a large electric suv. Until then, no more more large lexus LX's for me. Electric is the way to go. Very little maintenance, tires, window shield wiper fluid and maybe something else.

The LX600 doesn't have air S Suspension lol. It uses an active hydraulic suspension system

The compressor is inside the vehicle which would be harder to isolate, but give them a few years and I bet it will be solved. On a gas vehicle that compressor would be up near the motor. Again people keep calling the X and an SUV, but it's truly a CUV. If you look at what a sport utility vehicle started, Go to the original Jeep Wagoneer, the Suburbans. Those are SUVs. A CUV is based on a car chassis. The X is based on a car chassis Ala the Model S.

Hertz rental convinced me to try a Model Y recently and I thought it had a surprising amount of road noise. I'd get an R1S if I had to buy an EV now though...because it is the most useful to me. I worry the most about the air suspension compressor... Gets used a lot and is always the problem on suspensions with it from other manufacturers.

I have a 2013 lexus LX 570, and about to sale it to get a R1s. I had to fix my air suspension after my SUV was out of warranty. $800 dollars after 8 years. All good. Eights years no oil change etc etc with rivian. I'm ok with that.

With Rivian's larger battery now available how do the ranges compare with the two mfg's? Everything the Rivian does better is super important to me; everything the Tesla does better is no big deal. I think it's great that we're getting more choices, more competition and they're pushing each other to improve. I'm looking at the new Volvo models coming this summer, both of the Rivian's and the upcoming R2 will be a welcome addition.

An informative and fun follow up, Kim! I suspect that the cons of the R1S (like the noise) are due to being such a new startup. Betcha the first Tesla Model Xs off the line also had quirks that needed improvement. I'd say that the R1S is a more versatile and fully functional EV, but has two drawbacks: it lacks the Supercharger network (but that will change over time) and has lower energy efficiency (2.09 miles-per-kWh compared to your X's 3.02).

The Model X is not an SUV. It IS a minivan. The R1S is an electrified version of a traditional SUV. The excess sounds coming from the air pump is certainly fixable with some extra insulation, if you just can’t deal with it

Awesome comparison Kim! I can add to your comments about getting used to the yoke. I recently added one to my Model Y and have never looked back. The yoke looks and feels amazing. I may have the best of both worlds though as I obviously still have a proper horn and stalks. There is a learning curve to the yoke but once you master it you will not want to go back! Takes the car to a whole new level.

If money wasn't an option we would own the model x 6 seater... my brother in law has one and the doors are clutch for small kids. It's like an over priced but really nice looking minivan with awd.... but we don't have a cross over for rugged adventures instead it is for the few family trips we take.

It is difficult for me to understand why someone would choose the X over the R1S (especially with X being much more $$$$). The R1S seems to offer so much more versatility, room, capability,...... and it is a looker! The X is the least attractive tesla to me

First time sitting in a Tesla is an experience because of the hype. But after that if feels cheap and I’m talking about the plaid.

Go on then, trade the ability to drive anywhere for the roulette wheel that is public charging? Thats the bottom line 125,000 uk miles over 9 years never having to que or never having a duff charger. No mater how good the EV its useless for distance work without a dedicated charging infrastructure......case closed

If they get rid of the air suspension and just put normal springs under it, the compressor noise complaint would go away. It's a shame that a feature they spent millions to include and drives up the customer price is something that hurts the package.

model x all the way since i love the looks, tech, charging network, quietness, and the comfortability, it would be better for me since id do mostly road driving then offroading and if i even do any type of minor offroading the tesla would be good enough.
