Challenging the Prime Minister on Homophobia

I got the unbelievable opportunity to meet the UK Prime Minister and challenged her on DUP homophobia and the damaging effects it has on the LGBTQ+ community. It all happened at a reception put on by the Prime Minister to celebrate the community but it was a moment I felt needed to be used for more than just smiles and wine but real talk about real issues.
What do you think are the biggest things the government in the UK or wherever you're from need to do to tackle homophobia and promote equality?
Thanks for watching!

Riyadh K I live in France, and honestly as someone that has friends part of LGBTQ+ community, the most important issue is probably how hard it is for people to accept them. In a political way, adoption for same-sex marriage and having babies are probably the most important ones I believe. Slowly getting there but some political parties still slow down the laws, that I believe are needed for the well being of the community. Once laws will be approved, and easier it will get for some people (special old people) to accept LBGTQ+ community

Unfortunately, we will still have to fight it for a long time. Almost every religion around the world tells people that homosexuality is wrong. Some religions are very hateful and aggresive to the LGBT community. So as long as religion exists, homophobia will exist too. We can only try to prevent the hatred now, but there's a long way to go for full acceptance.

+Ana Alice A That would be perfect, but we won't change the people. Religion is a part of some people's lives and it does create their views on certain things. I don't really think we can call that putting religion into politics.

as a lesbian living in northern ireland i appreciate this SO much. coming from a protestant family and being particularly surrounded and influenced by the DUPs bigoted and homophobic views on lgbt manners was really hard for me personally; i struggled a lot with depression and self harm when i was around 13 years old, attending therapy but to no avail as i was just too terrified to admit that i was gay- i was so ashamed and afraid of my own identity. positive representation of the lgbt community and people like you who spread a message of equality and positivity helped me to love and become completely comfortable within myself, much love xo

NEVER turn down an opportunity to confront a politician holding ill-considered and/or ignorant opinions in public! Avoiding accomplishes nothing, while confronting may just shine a little light in to their minds, or at the very least allows them a chance to put their feet in their mouths in full public view...... You made the right choice to attend. Now, I'm waiting for your presentation to Elizabeth II.

Oh my god Riyadh, I am honestly in tears right now. I am so incredibly proud of you, and you don't even know me. I am in Northern Ireland and quite honestly, feel totally embarrassed and disgusted that NI doesn't have marriage equality. Especially considering I have family members who are part of the LGBT community here in the North and South. I normally love my wee corner of the world and am usually quite happy to say where I'm from. But the inequality being pushed by thon eejits up in Stormont really and truly saddens me and makes me embarrassed to be "Norn Irish". I am over the moon that you got that little jolt of confidence and said exactly what was needed to be said to the PM, but said beautifully and with grace. I just hope that she takes everything you said on board and that some day soon, I will be able to proudly say I'm from Northern Ireland again and marriage equality is a normal, every day thing here. Well done Riyadh. Lee xx

If you don't agree with it, then don't watch the videos. No one twisted your arm to come over here and watch this video. What other people do in the bedroom or who they choose to spend their life with should have no impact on your life whatsoever. I know how I live my life and what I do in the bedroom with my husband has literally NO impact or effect on your life whatsoever. You do you boo and live YOUR life the way YOU want and maybe don't judge others. If I can remember back to my Religious studies days, I don't think your Jesus was big on judging others.

Crafty Loops, I had no clue about this, I’m from England (London) and we do have the the same rights as heterosexual people and u not having the same rights as Northern Irish straight people shows the U.K. is not united. Theresa May is for everyone whereas Corbyn is “for the many, not the few”

Trust Northern Ireland to be at least 20 years behind the times. I am on the same page as you, I'm usually happy to say I'm from Northern Ireland but I have the fact we don't have marriage equality and it is embarrassing. Also the everyday homophobia is definitely still a thing. I got suspended from schools a number of times simply for expressing myself and who I really am. I hid my sexuality from my parents for years because I knew they wouldn't take it well. And I was right. I was kicked out off my home and told to never come back. And no, my parents haven't softened up, they still won't talk to me. I really just want people to see that it is real, these are the real issues, not RHI or any of that shit. I want people to see that this is not just a little thing for a little minority, that this is an everyday struggle for everyday people. Oh my god I literally cried writing this! Sorry this is so long but thx for taking the time to read it if you did lol.

Ye seem till forget this country is majority against the gay marriage and the protection of traditional marriage. This is one of the reasons why I will vote the DUP. Anyways ye lot have equal rights ye have civil partnership which has all the benefits of marriage but the only difference is the name. There are indeed so many issues, and one is the issue of the right to a private life, and that is a fundamental human right. It's not about legalising homosexuality, it's about legalising love. Just plain and simple love ♥

Nina Joan For "nobody" there are many people who think this is important, because the point is: human and civil rights! It's in the detail! Minorities have to be protected, appreciated and respected! This is a matter that could relate worldwide (Chechnya, Iran, China, Africa etc.). So please: Educate yourself. We are not talking about so-called "gay propaganda" or the so-called "gay agenda". We are talking about civil and human rights!

Great video, glad you got a chance to leave your mark on the current Prime Minister; she does seem like she really does want to be progressive but as a Vicar's daughter who is now rather old she probably needs encounters such as the one with you to show her what modern society stands for and demands. Riyadh K -- As a 70+ yr old gay American I was in tears of joy and pride listening to you. You are a beautiful human being in every sense. Here in Boston we, too, are proud that we were 1st in USA to affirm marriage equality. The world needs more bright young people like you in political office and I urge you to consider it. Laughed out loud at your Downing St decor comments. ("Maybe it's just the gay in me.") I fell completely in love with you over that line alone, as it shows the human side you spoke of that those in power need to see. Let's hope the PM watched this clip and put a few brothers/sisters to work on a rehab. At 16-18 I worked for the tiny NYC decorating firm hired by Jackie to do the WH, which included the creation of the now famous Rose Garden. May you have a very long and (continued) very beautiful life. Surely your Nan is smiling down on you.

Riyadh, I'm so glad you've shared this story. I'm from the UK but I haven't been home for about a year and the majority of news I've heard has been damaging to the LGBTQ+ community. Obviously the big ones being the Trump election and the DUP - a lot of the time it seems like we're going backwards. It hurts a lot more than I try to let on but it's people, like you, within the community that help so much more than I think you realise. Hearing about what Teresa May said and about your meeting with her gives me a little bit more hope that in the UK we are still progressing when it comes down to LGBTQ+ rights. Also your show on BBC 3 was great and I can't wait for any other projects you're working on. - Thank you xxx

This was such an amazing opportunity and I'm so glad you went and actually spoke to her. A lot can be said for protesting and whatnot but real conversation is the utmost important part of change. Congrats, Riyadh, you deserved this. Love from Ireland xx

Riyadh, I just want to thank you for doing this on the behalf of our community. This was such and incredible opportunity and you used it for something so amazing and I hope that she remembers what she learned that day and applies it to her policies. And getting the PM to watch your show? That's the greatest thing - and I hope she does.

Alex Stace Agreed. Whilst I live in the UK and I'm not transgender, I find it awful that transgender people are being discriminated against like this, in any part of the world.

He says it's due to costs of transitioning, yet in fact the actual cost of trans - related health care would be 0.02% of actual military spending. It turns out that they spend more on VIAGRA than they would on trans related health care so I don't know hat facts and where trump got them from. I saw it on the Washington post part of the discover section of snapchat

Asthmatics, those who are colourblind, and those with mental illness are all barred from the military (Not because they're evil, but because to be a soldier you need a certain standard of physical and mental capability.) Those that are transgender are still classified by the American psychiatric association as suffering from gender dysphoria, a mental illness. This is not to say they are delusional, unwell, or bad, but that the gender of their brain simply doesn't match their physical body. Furthermore, the community suffers from incredibly high rates of suicide, self harm, and depression, all far above the normal rates. Even when adjusted for those post transition and those who have been accepted into their community, the suicide rates are incredibly high because it is mentally incredibly difficult to be trans and those who are have an immense mental strain. This is not the fault of the trans person who was born this way, but it does make this person particularly likely to be unsuitable for military service. There may be individual cases of colour blind people who's condition won't affect service, just as there are countless trans people who don't suffer from this kind of depression, but because the military is not a social project, there has to be generic rules that apply universally jn order to protect both the other soldiers and themselves. I understand that because trump is basically inept and a republican and you're probably a very tolerant person that it seems like an evil decision rooted in bigotry, but try consider the fact that a soldier must be fully fit to serve in extreme conditions and the fact that many other groups are excluded.
