As a vet this was really hard to watch knowing something was seriously wrong for a few days. While at first I was judgmental that you didn’t bring RJ in, I had to realize it’s different as a city ER vet than living out in the country. You’ve always done everything for your animals and I love you guys for it. Seeing trauma like that there’s nothing that would have saved RJ. Don’t blame yourself at all. As you said animals will do their thing. Wishing your family love during your difficult time of loss.

Speaking from the position of a farm girl of over 20yrs. Freak stuff happens on the farm. Ppl looking in, and who have never been there, don't understand a farmer mentality. We do our best, to help our animals, until we cannot, and then if we can't, and if we can possibly afford to, we call a vet. Even then we have to take all things into consideration, once a diagnosis is made. Y'all did your best. Glad you have some resolution to what happened to RJ. Sometimes we don't always get that priviledge, on the farm. Sometimes it will always remain a mystery. That is farm life.

Well said… People who haven’t lived on a farm and been responsible for the lives of their animals often do not fully understand. That means on a daily basis you can have your heart ripped out… But you can also have joy from living with these beautiful creatures that God blessed us with… We had to put our guard dog down yesterday so forgive me if I’m a little emotional on this issue.

don't understand the farmer mentality? which part? the not caring? or the actually caring? or the sometimes over caring? because that's a Pretty damn big generalised brush your throwing there. Also anywhere that works with animals from zoo's to animal rescues to wildlife rescues have to deal with pretty random stuff. it's not a "in club" it's just a fact of working with animals, random stuff happens sometimes just like with humans.

I think about RJ every day. He passed away on your lap with your arm aroung him it is just like a human they need that closeness and the love that you gave him he felt very confortable near you and he just couldn't fight any more He went being loved and he knew how much you care for him

I'd not watched your vids until now. I felt your pain at losing RJ. If ppl give you a rough time, just let it pass. My name's Linda, so when you said Linda abandoned her newborns, that upset me. I feed Hummingbirds, Doves, and too many small wild birds to count. Many of us have a heart for animals so do our best to help them. I have a huge Bombay female cat, Onyx about 5 1/2 years old. I feed at least 5 neighborhood cats daily. I bought a large heated "tent" the cats sleep in, on top and underneath to keep warm. We're in northern California so it does get cold. God bless you, your family, and all of your critters. Sending love and hugs to all.

We were so heartbroken and cried for all of you in the loss of RJ. You guys are just wonderful in caring for your animals and there is no blame to place at all! I am so sorry RJ passed. He was such a joy to watch. Thank you for educating us. This past Friday January 19, 2024 I had to put my dog down, she had COPD for many years which was being treated but the last couple of days she was acting off. Suddenly she was struggling to breathe, the vet said her breathing was compromised to the point it was causing her pain and she wasn't going to get better. I am so heartbroken with her loss. Thank you for putting things in prospective. Again sorry for your loss and pain.

I’m sorry for the loss of your friend. I also had to put my miniature dachshund down that same day because her back failed her and she was paralyzed and in pain. I’d had her for 14.5 years. It hurts so much.

Gosh, I still miss my goofy red boy (in the thumbnail), he died when his pancreas failed suddenly. Lost my red and white female this last year, just old age. I'd dearly love to get another Dachshund, they are the most entertaining AND the most loyal dogs I've ever owned. But sadly, both of mine also had serious back problems as well. And now I'm older, sick and busted-up physically so I can't be lifting them or otherwise caring for a dog with a bad back. Breaks my heart. I still have my little rescue Chihuahua, though, and she's super sweet--never barks and is smart as a whip. She helps, but I still miss my two Doxies terribly.

I'm not not so sure Steve bit him. I have had alpacas & Llamas have seizures and break their necks from flapping on the ground and they eventually die. I wonder if there their bite marks or just broken spinal bones? I would ask the vet again about that possibility with RJ.

My uncle raised cattle. He was 75yo and loved his cows. He explained to me why he always kept two donkeys in with his cows. They protected his cows from predators.

I’m so sorry for your loss. RJ most likely would have died when you tried to load him into the trailer or whenever you hit a bump road. There’s no way people should/ could blame you. Unfortunately the animal world is very unpredictable. You provided RJ with the best life you could have possibly given him. Prayers 🙏🏻

Having had livestock all my life I know from experience that if something is going to go seriously wrong it will happen on a holiday weekend. Putting him in a trailer and bouncing him down the road for however long at a wind chill of -0 would have been terrible! You did what you could with what you had at the time. That is all anyone should ask. I appreciate your honesty at what happened so we can all learn from it. I’m sorry for your loss!!

I've seen a few cats bounce around like that before they die. One cat was hit by a van my mom was driving on our way to church. It just ran out in front of us and my mom hit it. It immediately started to bounce around really high in fact. It was awful to watch. Seeing RJ like that was really hard. I cried. I'm sorry you lost him and like that. Poor kid. Thanks for sharing. It's important for others to know what happened so maybe they can prevent something like this happening to them. It's good to see the love you share with your animals. It's good to see RJ wasn't alone when he died. Hugs.

I was gone overnight and the power went out and when it came back on his tank heater malfunctioned, his water got to 40° colder than it should have been. I felt so guilty for not being there to save him from that death. He was an amazing fish. So much personality and beauty and charm. 💔

I'm sorry to hear that RJ didn't make it. The short clip of his seizure reminded me of my dog. She had a violent seizure in July 2020, which was so heartbreaking for me to watch. It caused brain damage, and a week later she passed. The vet said it was a brain tumour that had remained hidden until the first seizure, and there was nothing I could have done to save her. I think God told me she was going to pass because the I held her and cuddled her for most of the night until the final seizure at about 6:30am when she passed. Even if you can't save your animals, at least you can be there for them in the end. 😢😢❤❤

I think had Steve bit another Donkey, it would have been a corrective bite. RJs neck isn't tough like a Donkeys neck. Both animals did what their species do. Linda probably sensed a weakness in her babies & left to get some food.... The animal kingdom is BRUTAL & BEAUTIFUL..... Y'all did NOTHING WRONG, I'M SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS....❤

Oh man, this is so heartbreaking. Poor little RJ. It was just one of those things that happens with animals. RJ couldn't holler at Steve and say, " Stop it, you're hurting me" but then again you never know how agressive RJ was getting and Steve said "Nope" But at least one special thing was that RJ passed away with his head on you lap, close to you as he crossed The Rainbow Bridge. Rest in peace sweet RJ. You were a legacy and you gave us many laughs and we will never forget you buddy.

Thank you Daniel for giving us all a chance to understand how poor RJ died. From the start I thought so much about what could have happened to him and fearing the worst was inevitable. It’s clear no one could have intervened to change the course of things. I will miss seeing and knowing about RJ & and of course, Rufus. It's always sad to see your animals die from an injury. I had no idea a mini donkey could do that. I plan to get minis and donkeys to protect herds. I will not be putting them in the same pastures now. Thank you for sharing your story.

There's a reason why people have guard donkeys but usually donkeys raised with a herd dont attack the flock. But as you said, males don't tolerate some types of behavior.

My sister had a big dog with epilepsy & RJ'S flailing looked like one of those attacks. So, that broken neck probably got to the nervous system 😢. I know how much ya'll loved him. 💙

Daniel, this is one of the best videos you’ve done. While it’s so incredibly hard to watch this video, it is life. It is nature. I cried for RJ and your family…the baby turkeys… but it truly is nature, and nature can be very brutal. As humans, we want to fix or control everything and step in when nature is tough, hard or cruel. Sometimes we are humbled by the fact that we can’t. All of your animals have a beautiful life there at AFH, and they are loved. You have nothing to take blame for, and I’m so thankful you were there for RJ to hold him at the end. RJ was something else indeed. He will be greatly missed. I am very sorry RJ suffered, no one would wish that. I hope the Arms Family will be able to recover from RJ’s passing. Daniel, you knew in your heart of hearts, loading RJ would have been too much. It’s a part of farm life. Some days it is amazing. Some days it breaks your heart. So sorry for your loss of RJ. RJ was a big surprising blessing to you guys from his Daddy Rufus. When you guys found out he was from Rufus. It was so neat and special you had RJ and Reba as offspring from Rufus. They are a miracle because you guys thought Rufus couldn't have and more offspring. I remember when you discovered RJ and Reba in your pastures. They were so cute and so tiny and it was such a joyous occasion when you guys discover them in the pasture and you guys realized they were Rufus's offspring, so and daughter. I or we were all was so so happy and so glad that You guys had apart of Rufus back at your homestead. Everyone who watched your channel with Rufus was alive, when he passed and when you found his two beautiful precious little little fur babies alpaca's in your pastures were a real miracle. I'm sorry for the loss of Rufus and now his beautiful handsome beloved son RJ. Now they are together living it up as father and son alpaca's in heaven together. May both of them rest in peace and the little turkey babies too. You did your best of taking care of RJ. Daniel you always do your best taking care of all your fur babies at your homestead.
