I have just heard Amsel Elgort, who plays Tony in the WSS remake, sing Maria. He leaves out those central repetitions of Maria, they are beyond his voice. Aaron Tveit is an amazing real tenor with strength and sensitivity.

@ThatGreenDayFreak, if I were ever wound up tightly enough to sing that B-flat, two things would happen: 1) I would instantly become constipated and unable to walk, and 2) I'd almost certainly blow a gasket just trying to hit it (so it would definitely not sound pretty at all).

No please, don't make opera voice more from musicalls than they already become.
@donxavier102 жыл бұрын
A very meh rendition of this piece. Not sure if this singer was having an off night. He was definitely having issues in several places in this song, as evidenced by his having to take breaths in odd places that threw off the phrasing. He's extremely tense on the high note. Watch his face. You can see his veins bulging. Not to mention that his vibrato starts to slow noticeably while he holds that note. A sign that he didn't properly prepare for it. It's only a B flat. Any professional tenor should be able to hit that note without those kinds of issues. In the end, his voice is so shot that he has to flip to his falsetto to float that pianissimo, but his breath support is so haggard that it doesn't have the ping that it should.

When I saw the recent movie, I loved Rachel Zeglar’s performance, but I found it hard to believe that she would stay with Tony based on Ansel Elgort’s performance. However, if Aaron Tveit played Tony, I would’ve totally understood why she would have wanted to stay with Tony after killing Bernardo 🤣

Aaron Tveit, a name I'd never heard before Schmigadoon, is a real tenor. Maria is a test for the male voice. And his movement on stage is so effective, rather than standing in place for the entire song. He is a fabulous dancer in the Gene Kelly mode, I've recently discovered.

The whole thing is just incredible, best I've heard. Well done Tveit, well done.

@@gamer5101 Marius has some low notes in his big song ("Seul devant ces tables vides"), but at least he's written with a tenor voice in mind. Now, Tveit has sung the title role in "Sweeney Todd" - and that is serious baritone stuff.
@Donello28 күн бұрын
@@crees1445 Joe Gillis requires a somewhat lower voice than that of Tveit, best would be a low tenor like Hugh Jackman or really high baritone (none that comes to my mind). However, recently he has even sung the title role in Sweeney Todd, which is written for a real baritone.

Aaron Tveit is everything. His voice is angelic. To describe how beautiful he sings Maria is beyond words. Just watch it and even play it hundred times won’t be enough…. At least for me. Aaron Tveit is a perfect name for challenging and difficult songs on Broadway musical. He can literally sing any songs. Perfect. When I heard : …. Suddenly …. it’s a very unique voice you hear. I’m no vocal coach but at least I can catch those short moment and I think that’s what makes him unique. You can hear it in some of songs he sang.

fave version as well but unfortunately he's now too old to play Tony in a movie: he's 11 years older than Ansel Egort and 18 years (!) older than Rachel Zegler. He's also 16 years older than Richard Breymer was in the 1961 version. It may work on stage, but it would be another Dear Evan Hansen situation in a movie version. It doesn't take anything away from this performance tho

I don’t think the Maestro did that, it was Aaron. He tends to cut applause off, he does this in concerts. Almost as if he is uncomfortable or even unworthy of the crazy ovations.
