Friend that was a great video and more than just an unboxing. I don't think you will have much trouble being heard out in skip land. I guess for me the SSB pep watts is amazing. The conversion shows that. Amazing ability to get the signal out. I know you have a really nice antenna setup etc. and that will handle the power on AM/FM and SSB. I remember a few months back when I heard you talking to Midwest USA and heard both sides of the conversation well enough. You found out after the contact that you were only running 12 watts PEP on CB 38 Lsb. LMAO. I remember you telling me within the hour of the contact that you forgot to power up the amp. It does happen when propagation is running and the bounce has power. I was running 300 watts pep and could only talk to the midwest. I think we are Skip Chasers and the thrill is the unexpected. Just when you say it cant it does. Great Video and setup my friend. NY202 USA Drew.

Hi Drew, the size of this thing is unreal compared even to my RM 505v, it dwarfs both the RM 400 (red one in the video) and the 505v, I got my 8- AWG wire in the post this morning so when I get some time later I'll be putting some of those heat shrink connectors to it and firing it up (maybe do a video on that) Yes the 109 Don from Columbus Ohio was a great contact but it was done on 8 watts not 12, I was amazed you saw the contact from both sides that was just fantastic, I remember yes within the hour lol. Tbh I'm a little scared to be pressing the microphone for the first time, it does give you the sense of anticipation of what to expect lol 73

Hey there pal, have you had a good holiday and feel rested.. Yes it's been pretty good recently, ive not had time to get on the radio this past week although i have been listening, I've heard Egypt, Morocco, Bermuda, America, Brasil and other south American countries and many far off stations coming in, but the propagation has been too low for me in my area, yet I've seen other peoples video's making excellent contacts twenty miles away from me, i guess im just not in the skip footprint yet.. What size linear are you thinking of getting.. i highly recommend the Rm Italy Kl 505v.. it may look the same as the 503's but it's a much better built amp and worth paying the £40 more, it also has the added bonus of two built on fans to keep it cool, i can run mine on FM with a seven watt input and it will drive it at 230 watts all day long and will pep at 400 SSB easily with a drain of 34 amps max.. So far with this 703 I've not tested it fully yet but did hook it up on FM to make sure it was working, i used two 50 amp psu's in series, it is a high drive linear so i fed it twenty-five watts from my Superstar 6900n and keyed up and it gave me a straight 400 watts on FM.. the instructions that came with it stated it can input up to 35 watts so it will put out more, the drain on the meter said it was 48 amps.. I've not had time to fully test it but may get time to do so over the weekend.

Do you know if it comes with internal low pass filtering?
@DeltaXray444
@DeltaXray444 2 жыл бұрын
Like the Rm 505v it is made generally for the 10 meter band and after i tested it on the oscilloscope the secondary harmonics on maximum output were very good will little distortion.. so it is filtered to a certain degree but RM still state that using a low pass filter for 27 mhz is recommended. on air i have had excellent reports on audio with no muffling or distortion across 10-11-12 meters and i have maxed it out on testing with a 60 amp psu.. all in all it is very clean on transmit. I haven't opened it up yet as ive been very busy hence my belated reply to you so i do apologise. So far it has worked very well, i fed it on radio's with the stated maximum output of 30 watts input with both single and double MOSFET's without any problems, the output was 490 watts on FM and on ssb it p.e.p'd out and did peak at 500 watts.. i stretched it with 35 watts too to see if there would be an increase with short bursts but it didn't peak with any more wattage on either, the amp drain on max output was 52 amps using 8awg. all tests were done using a dummy load. I'll email Rm Italy to see what they say about filtering, they have been very helpful with prior information i have asked them about.. Hope this helps,

@DeltaXray444
@DeltaXray444 Жыл бұрын
Hi Steve,, First I'd like to say it was good to see you with John Mower Junkie at the SC Ham Fest.. Rm Italy have come a long way over the past few years and have stepped up their build quality especially with the internal workings of their latest linear's such as the 505V and the 703V.. I have two of these 703's in line as well as a 505V on different radios and they perform exceptionally well.. The trick is to run them at there peak so always on full power which reduces resistance on the outputs.. this leads to a very clean outgoing signal without and audio distortion.. I've seen too many people overloading the linear with too much input watts to try to maximize the outgoing power and this is not good for the linear and in turn will sooner rather than later blow the finals.. Inputting around 20 watts peak is best and will give you around 400 watts peak output and it will run all day only getting Luke warm.. Yes you can give it the full beans of 35 watts input and wring out the full 500 Watts but your signal/audio will sound and perform dirty.. it's pointless anyway running it hard because nobody is going to see the difference with signal between a clean 400 and a dirty 500 at the other person's radio on receive.. all they will hear is a strangled muffled audio.. People fail to realise that this linear runs all Narrow bands including AM FM CW and SSB it will not perform the same output on all bands.. For CW it will easily run the full 500 but for AM FM and SSB running the linear clean does not require any more than 20 watt input.. Again running it light will benefit the the linear with a cleaner output with less distortion on the modulation Keep it light and the linear will reward you tremendously and give you years of use.. This thing has a monster size heatsink and those two big fans run silent when turned on and once keyed up gives a quiet whoosh sound returning to silent when you un key the mic and all the time constantly keeping the linear cool.. Power wise it does its job and better than any other linear in its class.. We have to also remember it's the largest 13.8V linear on the market today and it needs at least a 60 amp power supply to run it. The 703 gives you the power you need and so does the 505V on SSB and packs a punch.. for FM the carrier wave is solid so the linear will get hot if run on full power it's just the nature of the FM carrier.. AM/SSB our voice is our signal so the audio input spikes when needed.. talk louder or with a good power mic and the linear will push those watts out.. Even myself feeding it with 20 watts on SSB with my Sadelta Echo Master Plus it will peak around 480 and still remain cool with good audio which isn't far away from the spec RM Italy state.. A really good solid linear and treating it kind will last a long time.. definitely worth it in my opinion..

Hi Glenn, how does this amp work on your FT450D? I've recently bought the KL703 but yet to try it paired with my FT450, I was wondering how much input drive you're giving it. Thanks
@DeltaXray444
@DeltaXray444 Жыл бұрын
Hi Ed This is a high drive amp and it works very well on the 450, I set the radio to a 35 watt output and make sure the audio setting doesn't rise above the ALC, the ALC will limit the amount of audio driving the 450's outputs into the amp keeping it clean and not overdriving the linear.. the linear is set at 14.1 volts from the PSU even though the linear states 13.6 on the rear it's safe enough to feed it at 14.1 to drive it.. you can feed the linear with 35 watts on SSB AM and FM and the linear will do near it's claimed 500 watts.. but remember that when you go up or down the band the Swr will change so depending where your swr is it may kick out less or more power with a slightly higher or lower swr.. I've run this linear on SSB for a long time many months and many hours at a time it doesn't even get Luke warm those fans are excellent at keeping it cool.. although on a fixed carrier like FM it will get warm if you have long overs but never gets to hot.. also I use tuned jumpers to maximise the output, you will be surprised how much difference that different length jumpers give you with the output.. my jumpers are six and nine feet long using RG213u Military grade coax. Hope this helps P.S always have a meter in line after the linear so you can monitor the linear's output,. Just to be safe. Hope this helps, shout up if you need any help.. thanks.

It sounds like you are getting things in order which is very good, by the way I always run the linear on high output all the time,, one thing to note is if you run the linear say with a 35 watt input on low output from the linear remember that you will be putting in 35 watts to get around 160 watts output on the linear's low power setting.. this will put strain on the linear's internal components.. in other words you will be driving the linear hard to get little out, so it's always best to find the sweet spot with input watts.. So reduce the input watts if running the linear on low power and also medium settings.. you will still get the 160 watts output on low power with something like a 15 watt input from the radio instead of hitting it hard with 35 watts input.. What I have said here is one of the reasons why so many people blow there linear's up.. because they don't realise they are putting strain on the linear.. Also the linear is pretty clean on the final output from the antenna.. also make sure your meters can handle the linear's output and also the antennas rating of how much power it can handle, obviously you don't want to transmit on an antenna that can only handle say 200 watts.. I will also add that if you have the linear in line and not using it the pass through wattage is only fifty watts, so make sure if you are using the 450 with it's own output of 100 watts you never have the 450's power setting above 50 watts.. You probably know all this anyway and I'm not trying to be patronising I'm just explaining things that are well worth remembering.. I wouldn't want you to put your 450 on 100 watts when not using the linear when its in line when the linear's pass through rate is only 50 watts, the most I do is around 40 watts to be safe.. Good luck Ed and I hope you have fun using it, they are a very good linear indeed and if treated/respected it will last you a long time, one last thing always make sure your swr is low no higher than 1.5.. lol

@DeltaXray444
@DeltaXray444 2 жыл бұрын
Il be honest with you here, I try not to use AM with a lot of power, I'm always confused with how much American radio's swing, I don't get it.. on all my radio's that have AM (and I have many) when keying up on Am there is hardly any swing at all, there may be a little when I talk and the wattage out of the radio is relatively the same and may only increase with modulation by around half to one watt, we never see those swings on AM like you American channels show.. As crazy as that sounds it's true.. I get it on ssb when you do get a lot of swing but when amp builders show the peaks it's a little bit decieving, then when folks buy amps the first thing they realise is they aren't getting the same output power that was shown in a video.. I see this all the time.. they either complain or blow the amp up because they don't understand the difference between AM and ssb peak swing readings.. Ok so let's start with the 703 amp I have conversed back and forth with RM Italy and they tell me the 703 input power for AM FM is the same which is 35 watts input.. so when using ssb you want around 35 watts swing into the Amp.. you can go more but keeping it around 35 watt swing will keep the input drive happy, it is a high drive input linear after all.. it also makes sense to have a good meter that reads pep (peak envelope performance).. Also remember we don't scream into the microphone to speak at peak volume so at 35 watt swing you will never overcook this amp and even with 35 watt swing you are probably hitting the output transistor's with around 20 watts swing.. obviously the louder your voice the more watts will hit the finals.. having a good microphone helps to maintain around a 35 watt peak into the finals.. I run mine on 14 volts (you have to remember it is a mobile linear and when a car is running the cars loom is at around 14.5 volts so running it from a power supply at 14 volts is safe.. Another thing to help you reach peak power from the amp is having the right length jumpers, experiment with longer jumpers you will notice say a six foot jumper will only give you 350 watts but a nine foot jumper may give you 450 watts (jumper size makes a difference regardless of what people may say, try it you will see for yourself.. I use silicon sheathed cable at 8awg it's much more flexible.. this is important has it will carry you amps comfortably from PSU to amp, 8awg will carry a load of around 180 amps easily.. don't skimp on cheap under powered wire.. all these things here will help you achieve a comfortable output from the linear.. also make sure your swr is low and use a tuner if necessary, and also make sure your antenna is rated above the maximum output of the linear, another thing is never try to squeeze every last watt from the amp as it's pointless and will just result in lowering its life expectancy.. Sorry this is long winded but I try to give honest answers, after all I use one myself so I'm not going by hearsay or what others say who give advice yet have never used this amp.. Here are my settings that I have used since using this amp and it's as good now as when it was new.. you can use these settings without worrying about overloading the amp.. Power input 13.8 volts or 14 volts maximum FM input between 25 watts to 35 watts AM 30 watts your modulation will peak it at around 35 watts SSB maximum of 40 watt swing I use these settings all the time without stressing the amp and it always runs between 450 to 500 watts, the amp can do more but you would only be stressing it or over saturating your audio. There is much more technical stuff I could mention but it's very long winded but I hope this helps, good luck and enjoy the amp, she's a beaut.

hi, have you a link to the awg wire with the fitting for this amp ? Thanks

Hi.. here is the link, you will need a good set of cutter's if you need to cut the length, but you can order the correct length too if need be.. This will carry 180 amps so is more than enough to carry the load from amp to supply. Thanks. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8-10-12-14-16-18-AWG-Gauge-Flexible-Silicone-Wire-Copper-Black-Red-RC-Cable-UK-/402631270444?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

They are a very good linear in my opinion, like most transistorised linear's if you feed them with the correct input they will last a long time, the 703 will do half a kilowatt all day long and never get warm.

Hi.. I try not to overdrive mine, but the RM3 outputs for them to be replaced are very cheap (around £7 UK) I'll listen out for you, I'm always around those channels when the skip is running.

I use a hundred amp supply and that runs the 703 pretty comfortable.. I've seen other people try a 60 amp but they aren't really big enough, I blew a 60 amp running it on FM, a sixty will run it ok on SSB but not at peak power.

@@DeltaXray444 hi and thank you reply well I’ve email rm them selfs that I think it needs to be address if anybody sees this messages and are using a kl703 rm Italy email me back today saying a 50amp will fine .it’s miss leading information even from them them selfs as your saying a 6o is not ideal for fm a 1oo amp is better we all know the RM makers are right dam touchy if you use wrong power that they recommend well I’ve got them direct on email I think I need to address them and others please email them because if a 5o amp damages a kl703 I got the proof what they said

@@winstonbanks1057 I'm not sure why RM would tell you a 50amp would be fine.. how can this be.. at full output power on FM the amp drain is around 54 amps.. So even when running a 60 amp PSU the 60 amp would get hot very quickly and as in my experience on when I run my 60 amp PSU it got hot and the PSU fan kicked in almost instantly when using FM.. this blew my 60 amp PSU very quickly as the PSU was struggling to keep up maintaining the 54amp drain.. Just because he 60 amp PSU is rated at 60 amps doesn't mean it will comfortably run a 54 amp drain,.. 54 amp drain is a heavy load to maintain and the 60amp PSU will struggle to maintain the draw before the psu's fan kicks in because of overheating under drain from 54 amps.. This is why I changed to a 100 amp PSU which is more than capable of doing the job.. Transmitting is much more harsh on FM as it is a single straight carrier and piggy backing the audio on the same frequency on transmit.. whereas when using SSB there is no signal output until the audio is transmitted via the microphone and uses much less amp draw from the PSU.. a 50 or 60 amp PSU will run the 703 when it's on low output.. but when on the high power setting output/watts on FM a 50 or 60 amp PSU will never run the 703 at its full potential.. I've heard many people say many different things about how to run the 703 even people who have never owned or used one before.. I'm just giving you my own experience from actually owning one and seeing what occurs in reality once you hook the 703 up.. I hope it all helps you.. my advice to anyone is to use a PSU that will run and handle the 703 at its most power of around half a kilowatt.

I use four 25amp supplies with a combiner to regulate the output they are around £30 each.., I got an electrician to put them together for me.. it's much cheaper than buying a 100 amp bench supply which usually cost over £1200. You can buy the 25 amps on eBay.. I'm not electronically minded and needed help to get the 100 amp supply put together.
