I met Paul Barton twice in person. One of those encounters was at the NRC's anechoic room in Ottawa's east end. He showed me a spot in the anechoic room floor where the wedges were compressed as a result of Floyd Toole falling off the platform.

I'll never forget the first time I heard my first pair of PSB speakers. They were magical, reasonably priced and had amazing sound. I was at Audio Alternatives in NE Atlanta. They were about $300 a pair for small bookshelves. Amazing sound. There were speakers that cost into the $1000's that could not compare. Only competitors were Monitor Audio and Meadowlark which cost way more.

Stephen Moss I had to respond to another comment about the fact they are reasonable as far as speakers are. I'm about 25 thousand dollars into a music library including the equipment. I have multiple amplifiers and sources. I haven't even fallen for anything gimmicky yet. No magical wires or anything like this. I'm a huge fan of the accuracy these speakers have. The large speakers I have seem to have a very good roll off of the frequency hand off from one speaker to the next so I don't hear and muted or dipping at various frequencies. Paul Barton is a very good guy and he has created a company that has been researching , testing and developing the equipment for the hi fi enthusiast at a very fair price. He's not trying to make money without providing something of value. It's a business and he's changing a competitive position and he has really put himself into this company. Owner and engineer. Only other person that is similar is Andrew jones. Anyone who is hating on this company or its products is probably never owned anything of value so has no reference and it appears some of them are jealous that they aren't able afford them. It's America. It doesn't take luck, hard work, continuously learn and observe the process and adaption to work with or better than that process.

PSB are engineered,and not some vanity project that is more superficial appearance than performance. I'd say that the monitor audio to compare would be the silver, because the bronze aren't as good as PSB. Meadowlark used very good drivers that cost $$$ and they charge a ton. When cost is no object, it's easier to design with. Designing a quality speaker the average person can afford is hard.

The problem is perception. Audio snobs often ignore PSB and ELAC because they are not costly enough or audio jewelry. The prevailing thought in the USA (even by mediocre companies like Polk) is to charge arbitrary high prices in attempt to command respect. The LSi/9 were the perfect example. Almost 2 grand for $60 in parts and a rudimentary crossover. They had a nice tweeter, (Vifa ring) and nothing else. $1800 a pair for speakers that aren't as good as PSB costing 1/3 a much.

Canada produced some very good speakers that are world class. PSB, Paradigm, Merak, Energy. We had a company called Marsland speakers where we procuded the raw drivers that are still sought out today.

Way back in the day Mr. Barton came into a local Hi Fi / Bicycle Shop in Trenton Ontario with his latest creation a badly built box with a load of Phillips drivers I think it had 4 Philips poly Tweeters horizontal across the top. When they asked for our opinion being teens with no filter honestly it sounded awful and we said so. Forward 50 + years just finished refurbishing a Sub ll and it is a very musical device and I don't usually like subs but this has changed my mind about subs.

Yeah i had to pass speakers in the measuring booth just like you...most of them never passed, but still i was told to allow for production..

May I suggest a great test cd.. Keith Jarrett from Standards vol2 "God Bless the Child." The piano in the midrange the bass where it belongs and the dummer beats 4 simbles to every drumb beat. It couvers it all. Not to mention it is a great piece.

Now that hifi speaker companies seem to be kind of waning due to the economy. What struck me is who's going to take their place. I mean look at what went into these speakers. Can a small shop compete with that? Im not so sure...

Even cross over components deviate from what a standard ref would be.
@lazygamerz
@lazygamerz 9 жыл бұрын
Dave Jones Yes, but they have made millions of them so they know the mean deviation and use that in their design, so the design is still good even with all the deviation seen in the parts.

I'm sure you will understand that it's something that your government has allowed. My united flakes have done the same. Trade tariffs were specifically designed to prevent the citizens from being outsourced by their foreign competition. It's easy researched as to the context and nuanced reasoning. But they don't teach that in school. How constitution is a living document but the only thing that meant was adding things that would have been unforeseen but the framework and regulations like tariffs were not supposed to be removed. It's supposed to be adjusted by congress to assure prosperity for the citizens. CIA , FBI, gun control of any kind including for felons, federal income taxes and these new federal licensing standards for DOT. The regulations and regulatory commission have non elected people creating laws that are designed to prevent small businesses from being created. I can keep going. But don't hate a man trying to become wealthy. I am too. Blame the government who has created a huge problem for these people who are here with no education and will to work because the government is paying for everything. There's no jobs left here and illegals are taking the labor jobs and the populations so brainwashed that they aren't willing to understand that while it might be hard for them to have this hardship they committed a crime and they are not going to jail but sent home. Immigration is another lever that congressional leaders are supposed to control. So I'm rambling again. People are lazy and unmotivated and they're intelligence is gone and they'll have the government they deserve.

@46:00 50+ years he just lost me again there is no comparison between Ceramic and Alnico anyone with a set of ears can hear the superior performance of Alnico over all other magnets. Edited Ok wise guy "I'll just use a bigger magnet" a bigger magnet isn't going to up the lines of force in the magnetic field that Alnico processes.

Well I'm agree with your presentation. But, There is A circle of confusion other than F.Toole one. Loudspeakers Judged with recordings made in a room with no standards with a loudspeaker in a room which is build with no standards. Till now I've realized only two things. " Distortions cannot be avoided, they can only be minimized", "Prevention is better than cure".

i noticed that those are probably ?? whose speakers are you testing?? now are you having to pay to get those tested ,or are you getting to test these on the free for the testing facility to have classes to learn from testing your drivers.. i cannot believe that they will charge your company that amount of money and you will pay . what gives?

How tf would you know? do you own his product? if you can afford to buy his product than you two deserve each other. The fanatical pursue of audio perfection is admirable but foolish and a waste of thousands of hours, with that much dedication he could have cured cancer by now. This product is only available to soul voided, materialisticly rich.

Jaime Flores PSB isn't even that expensive. I do believe you're being a bit melodramatic. Music in my opinion is the most important part about humanity and it is an expression of the soul of man. Any time listening to music is not foolish but rather an intellectual and spiritual experience. Music has profound impact on humanity and even plants are thought to have effects from the sound waves. Music is being used for therapy because it helps create pathways for the brain. Teaching children to play music early is proven to increase their intelligence quotient and their understanding of mathematics is always in the top percentile. Music is cultural and creates connections with people that are profound. They can make speakers that quality for less money ? Maybe. Andrew jones has a great deal with Elac but they don't have the fit and finish of PSB. The owner is also the engineer so it's not some conglomerate or stock holders who hire whoever they are inclined to. This man puts his entire being into his company and took a huge chance to make a speaker for reasonable price that is accurate to the source. I've had a few hi end speakers and my friend has a pair that I've listened too many times. The crossovers roll off seamlessly and I've never heard any frequencies that sounded mute or enhanced. It's about the best way to critically listen to recordings because the music isn't colored but it I'll add of course you have to have everything else correctly in order but this hobby is a reward for the money you've earned. It's a good man to give your money to. I'm going to be attempting my own speakers and amplifiers and I'm going to be spending lots of money and time building up various prototypes and then testing equipment and then this probably will be something I don't ever finish to my satisfaction and I'm not considering it a foolish thing to do. It's something that makes me happy and I'm not sitting on the couch watching the brainwashing box. Hell if you don't want cancer don't watch tv as a society. Because after seeing the kardashians and witnessing reality tv becoming a thing that people watched I began to pay attention to the people who were watching it. They are literally in a trance. Next time you see someone watching regular tv or reality tv pay attention to their faces and eyes. They glaze over. I don't think it's 100% bad but commercial tv is the way you are being programmed to do what you are told you sheeple. Don't believe me? Look up the video of Big Bang theory without laugh track. Not one thing is anyway funny even a little. Add the laugh back in and it's nearly impossible for tv watchers to laugh along. I never watch so I don't have the Pavlovian response. Music is art. Art is an expression of men's souls. It's a pursuit I think is the god connection that everyone wants. You want god? Stop ignoring your frequency cause gods in the music. Want cancer cured? Convince everyone to reduce non fibrous carbohydrates and any chemical processes stopped immediately. Sugar and the livers response is a huge problem for society and the population is expected to understand anything about that disease when they don't tell you exactly what it is and how it happens? Not just reducing glycemic carbohydrates but the fat intake has to replace the calories not meat. Also any nightshade like tomatoes and peppers are inflammatory and can cause cell damage If you said no more sugar and all that and cancer is done within 4 generations I bet you anything that some sugar paid scientists like Neil Tyson would say that it's science and cancer is not curable. Sugar isn't bad. It's needed for the brain (ketones are). And even if someone wasn't fighting it. Even it the science has been proven and shown they'd be protesting and rednecks will be saying it's the vegan hippie liberals. Any way I just realized how verbose I was now. I'm sorry. I was foolish enough to smoke herbs and listen to this presentation.

There are two ways to analyze speakers, technical and organic. Paul has a way of melding the two and it is a gift.
