This is part five of our KTM 690 & Husqvarna 701 complete engine rebuild. In this video, we begin the process of rebuilding the engine, starting with assembly of the top end. Is there anything more satisfying than seeing the cylinder with the piston mate to the engine case.

Very good Video. I'll have to learn all of this, as I have 3 engines this winter ready for an overhaul. Suggestion: Giving the rating for the bolts in Newtonmeters for us metric folks would be a very nice and welcome addition.

Great vidéo. Why don't you use a pin in the balancer shaft (hole in left cranckcase half) to find TDC, and to align the camshaft when you put back the timing chain ?

That's the best way, but not necessary. On some bikes you can just remove the washer and use the bolt, but others will need the special tool. It's just one less tool you won't have to buy. -Charles

new CYLINDER HEAD SCREW use or not , i change my gasked and i use all old screw

So I just finished assembling the engine and I just noticed that the picture from the manual noted that the clip has a particular direction.....and I installed it the other way. The clip was fully seated into the groove and was a real pain in the butt to get in place. Does the clip HAVE to be installed in that direction? I've assembled many engines before and never had an issue with clip direction, I usually just put the opening at 12 or 6 o'clock. Really don't feel like tearing this engine down again and buying new head bolts and a gasket. I waited 4 months for those parts..

Are you able to do a top end with the engine still in the bike? I have to do one for a customer and just doing some research

You probably could, although it would most likely more of a pain to do it that way. The motor drops out the bottom without much work and you'd save yourself a lot of headache by doing the top end with the motor out. Good luck!
