Let's imagine a growing city. Cims are moving in and traffic is flowing fine. The population hits 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, and then it hits. Traffic grinds to a halt. Services can't get through, and buildings start dying. Most problems in Cities: Skylines are caused by bad traffic due to lack of a planned road layout using "Road Hierarchy". This video explores road connection concepts to help your citizens move freely and without backup.

I'm currently experimenting with a magic-roundabout-style system of single-direction (all traffic on the highway is going clockwise) hexa-/octagonal highway rings around neighbourhood cells, with two or three internal arteries for quick connection and a roundabout at the center. I'm sure it would drive real people insane having to do slight detours and constantly having to turn right, but the game population seems to like it and it makes for a very space-efficient highspeed road network.

One thing that I've noticed in real life is that local roads are often connected to arterial roads but with only right turns being allowed. That way, the arterial isn't disturbed, but there's also more connections and pedestrians have more mobility.

Best video on road hierarchy right here. We all know that the bigger are for more volume (that's how other videos usually explain them), but this one actually shows us how you're supposed to set them up and connect them with a very nice example that you could actually copy for your own city. I would like to have seen the next step, and that's the squares filled up and see it in action, but I guess we can do that ourselves. Your point has been made!

@@YUMBL When you started adding paths? Yes. Those are great. But also not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a second connection that a firetruck could use. great video about road hierarchy and a video all newbies should watch and derive their cities from. I used to play SimCity ALL THE TIME and got so used to the grid system, because that really was the limiting factor. So I got really good at these types of city layouts and it is the best way to start learning about efficient traffic systems. From this point on you can experiment around and make beautiful layouts, less effective for cars, but more interesting visually and for pedestrians. The one thing I always like to add is an elevated 4 lane road, then highway, perpendicular to the ground level highway, spanning the entire length of the city, often with a bend to the corners. This allows for extremely fast one way connections when ESPECIALLY industry related traffic wants to go from one end to the other. Once you add pedestrian overpasses to the roads, your traffic will stay above 90% consistently, with the help of metros later in the development. The most crucial information in this video: "Have the least amount of intersections as possible"

Just a small side tip, Arterials should get bus lanes, whereas collectors and local roads should get bike lanes or bike paths running parallel if there's no zoning. You rarely see high speed arterials with bike lanes in real life. Beautiful layout BTW. I'd like to make layouts like this however I need to move to PC because PS4 vanilla maps are horrible and not having move-it sucks

Love that service interchange, we have some of those around the Copenhagen area and it makes sense, so comuters only make right turns and help decrease traffic. Having watched a few times, I notice now that one of my mistakes is making the arterial span too long. These quadrants look like they might offer better flowing traffic instead of forcing everyone down the same one or two roads.

Also, about service interchanges. You can harmlessly add a couple right-hand turns outside your main interchange. Like, say, looking on the last minute of the video. The cars moving from the right bridge to the "upper" city could make a right-hand turn right away from the bridge without driving all the way to the service interchange, thus freeing it from 12.5% of the traffic. Also, you can make an outcoming right-hand turn on that spot from the "lower" city to the bridge (for example, I'd upgrade the road next to the forest to arterial and make an exit from it), and that's additional 12.5% of the interchange traffic. In my experience of playing CS such separate right-hand turns (and sometimes even left-hand turns, if you go crazy) can spare you A LOT of traffic problems.

Even on collector roads having intersections too close to the arterial intersections can create problems. Second flaw : you want traffic to be able to move around without using arterials ( from 1 block to another) so overpasses or underpases are requiered in downtown areas. My city core has it and prevents overuse of arterials. Plus it looks really good with the IT cluster skyline. Also, i use for my highways what i call dedicated urban motorway design : the roads that run closest to the highways ( both motorways and expressways) only intersect with the ones that crossover the highways, so not with the ones that lead to service interchanges. It works brilliantly and allows for buses to travels between blocks ( making lines attractive) cumulated with crossroads between them. My issues are the way too attractive bus and train lines that i create (the more you spend, the worse the financial deficit gets). Otherwise, great video that should be seen by anyone that need a refresh or find a way to start ! Pressed the like button to help

for vanilla interchange go from two 3-lane highways into one 6-lane road (you can actually connect them in a neat triangle), then 4 lane, then 2 lane. btw if you smack a toll (two of them, one per highway) right before your 6-lane it will slow them down before they merge making everything smoother.

It's so you can recreate the North American mistake of demolishing low income neighborhood to run a gigantic highway through it displacing thousands while lowering land values nearby creating gigantic unprofitable slums because no houses or businesses want to be there. All the while create traffic problems by funneling both inner-city and suburban traffic on to the few service interchanges and taking up valuable buildable land away from local city governments. lovely dystopia ;) But CS will make it look nice with its by default high tech futuristic looking buildings.
@A.Martin

@@YUMBL sometimes though you will take a direct offramp or onramp from your highway into your grid without a local road crossing the highway. It isn't always the case you have a local road passing over or under the highway. Doing that can be a hinderance even because you are mixing highway traffic going on and off with traffic just wanting to cross the highway. Like you have a CBD and majority of the traffic heads just straight to the CBD down the highway, you might have only north bound ramps going direct to the CBD from the highway. Whereas people wanting to go elsewhere in town can take the regular interchange to get elsewhere in the town centre.
@bobbodaskank

There's something lovely about starting strong with a service interchange that services both sides of the highway from the start. I think a lot of players focus really hard at the start on one side of the highway because of that default interchange and limitations with tile unlocks, but I think this leads to new players struggling with transitioning to larger and more effective layouts. For example, many players get trapped with exactly one interchange available when their industry takes off, and suddenly industry traffic is clogging the system. A simple service interchange that services both sides of the highway allows players to conveniently move industry to the other side of the highway, separating the traffic, and giving room and time to move toward additional highway connections, rail, etc. that can help reduce the need for strict zoning segregation.
@YUMBL

@@YUMBL Hey, on the topic of industrial traffic, have you considered making a video on effective warehousing with the industries DLC? Thanks for explaining this. Through hilarious trial and error, ended up with a road hierarchy layout without knowing there was a formal name to it. Very exciting.

A thing that a lot of people don't talk about is the angle of a road when curving. Depending on the type of the road (speed) should dictate how harsh you can bend the road angle. The game kind of prevents you from doing this (highways won't make sharp turns) but the client can supersede it, which most of the time is not good, because, although vehicles collisions aren't integrated, vehicle speed IS integrated. If a vehicle on an arterial is going 60MPH then suddenly has to brake for a damn near 90 degree turn, it will take longer to get to its destination and cause rubbernecking. Great video btw!

thank you for showing us that interchange, i've always wondered how to incorporate a two-way road into one but could never figure it out on my own. was always just frustrated with trying to go from two separate one-way roads into a single two-way

I’m glad you liked it! I’ve started watching actual city planning videos to wrap my head around it. Most skylines videos don’t explain that there are two fundamental types of interchanges.

@@YUMBL As a Dutch Traffic engineer, it is mostly the politicians that make the decisions on building roads or other kind of infrastructure. We only provide the calculations, designs, positive & negative effects etc. etc. The only power we have in terms of making decisions, is wheter or not some roads need maintainance and what is the best option to solve a problem. of course we are limited by budget and other factors ofc.
