My first Gamecock game ever was the historic 1984 season; opening game against the Citadel with my late father. USC barely won 31-24 while rotating QBs. Looked like it was going to be a loooong season but it ended up being magical as any die-hard Gamecock fan knows. Great stuff guys! 👍

Coach Morrison's "If it ain't swayin', we ain't playin' " came from the fact when the upper decks were added the support structure wasn't as strengthened. In the early 70s the west stands were completely rebuilt from the original 1930s. In 1982, the east stands had the upper deck added. The east stands are the only original portion of the 1934 structure. "The new east upper deck created some controversy during the 1983 season. Fans reported it was noticeably swaying-as much as a foot by some accounts. The swaying was especially pronounced during a game in which the Gamecocks routed Southern Cal 38-14. Joe Morrison was subsequently quoted as saying, "If it ain't swayin', we ain't playin'"-a phrase that eventually made it onto bumper stickers and other items, and is still a popular saying today. Giant shock absorbers were installed under the east upper deck for the 1987 season; however, during the 1988 season, many spectators reported seeing a ripple effect across the east upper deck when the marching band played the song "Louie Louie." The university indicated that the sway or ripple was safe. To this day, the east upper deck still sways when fans jump up and down. In addition, several parts of the stadium have been known to vibrate due to the decibel levels generated during a typical game. " You should add the original Carolina Stadium was called Melton Field and was located where the Thomas Cooper Library is so we almost had a directly on campus stadium. Imagine that gameday traffic insanity! I think for all the bashing of location by some people it's in a good position as being downtown Columbia would be so horrible. Just imagine with the trains!

I've had seats all over the stadium. The upper west are the best. The view of the game is wonderful...the scoreboard great view, the sun going down on the city with a colored sky is perfection. Go Cocks. Spur 'em.

I was there Halloween vs Tennessee for The Program. They dropped banners over the scoreboard and there were multiple teams on the sideline during halftime when they did the shots...lol.....

If I'm honest I like Alabama's setup with large screens in the corners. I'd rather enclose that end. We went from 80,250 capacity from 1996-2019 to now 77,559 with the recent renovations. I do believe sooner or later that building the giant screen basically sits on will be taken down. And that end will be like the opposite end. Probably 15-25 years from now.

That corner of the stadium is kept open mostly so you can move big equipment/stages in and out for concerts and whatnot. Great concerts have come to Willy B over the years.

Great job Nate and Triston! And as a lifelong Gamecocks Fan, I have to say the atmosphere at Williams Brice never disappoints, from 2007 on Thursday Night versus Ole Miss when Sandstorm was born to 2010 when we beat Alabama or 2013 wins over UGA and Clemson.

I’ve been a Carolina fan for as long as I can remember. Trust me it’s a while.....I could care less about seeing downtown Columbia. There needs to be more seating. More seating promotes more revenue. More revenue enables upkeep and better resources. The better the campus, curriculum and stadium the better the prospects will be.

Fun fact -- Having spent many days and nights supporting the previous scoreboard (as an employee of the manufacturer, Daktronics), I want to shed some light on the word "JumboTron". For the record, the video board is not a "JumboTron". The word JumboTron is actually a trademarked term coined by Sony and used as the brand name for their large screen multi-CRT video boards (Sony no longer produces any products under the JumboTron name). It eventually became a generic term for all giant video displays (regardless of manufacturer), but Daktronics video boards are LED video boards and Daktronics has always distanced itself from the phrase "JumboTron".
