Just bought a 07 sterling at 9500 MBE4000 engine from a private seller. Found a mechanic on fb who did inspections. …..he came out and hooked up the diagnostics computer to the trucks computer. He checked for codes, hours, combustions tests etc….truck only had 7,000 hours with 151,000 miles…..checked brakes suspension etc….checked out pretty good…gotta do brake pads and shocks tho. Hopefully it holds up

I would add, crusty old zip ties, galvanized turbo/CAC clamps, all of those look bright and shiny! water clamps and silicon hoses, CAC /turbo connector tubes for indent, turbo clamps for rotation.. if they are pointed down.. NO mech would install them like that lol. Hammer tap U-Bolts/Huck Bolts for breakage.. and top main coolant into therm housing! As you say, Watch for neglect in the small details and you can tell how much the truck was cared for!

Maintenance, Maintenance and more Maintenance, don't be afraid to do oil changes and don't go by what the manufacturers say, don't be afraid to send oil samples to check viscosity, I have personally always ran Mobile Delvac since I learned that it runs the longest of the truck oils shy of going synthetic and even Delvac starts losing viscosity at 12,000 miles so I did oil changes at 10,000 miles and the only engine I had overhauled went 1.8 million miles before the overhaul, the more electronics You have the cleaner You need to keep it and when purchasing a used truck ask for Maintenance records people who actually take care of their equipment keep a log of everything done to the truck and receipts for tax purposes especially for major repairs Engines, Transmissions and Rearends ,if it looks like it wasn't maintained by all means walk away.

What I get from this is that owning a truck is like owning a boat x 4. I see all these KZfaqrs talking about making big bucks in trucking. If they're owner operators, they must be making negative earnings come year end with all the maintenance and repairs unless they somehow have the time and equipment to work on it all themselves in addition to driving 3,000 miles a week. Seems like a good business to go broke in.

It's simple buy a truck out of a lease fleet or a company fleet were maintenance and service of the truck was priority, most of them start getting rid of their trucks at 500 to 600 thousand miles. Never buy a truck from a run of the mill dealer usually a name brand dealer is better Pete, KW ect. Never buy a truck from and owner operator unless you you know the truck and how it was taken care of, the worst is an owner operator running a piece of junk. Here is the list in my opinion has the best resale value in the market best to worst. KW, Pete, Western Star, Freightliner, International, Volvo. Napa has a good fleet of used trucks.

I use Mobile Delvac as well in my truck. Change it every 15 to 20k miles. Nice thing about my Volvo is that it uses three oil filters, so I can go a bit further between changes before the oil starts to change color.

A lot of the freightliners in the fleet I work on were “safe “ (90% of them) to the half million mile mark … By that I meant 90% of our trucks went close to 500,000 with little to moderate repairs. The occasional engine light usually a simple sensor (inlet or outlet NOx sometimes a pressure sensor )once ina while needed DPFS. Inspections tires brakes ocational wheel seal . Most one boxes on our fleet start shutting the bees around 550,000 on average We had one at 380,000 need one and another at 739,000 needing one

Bearing seals , crankshaft seals.....have a metal spring sandwiched in-between rubber which the rubber is what contacts the shaft and I believe the spring is there to keep a tight fit between the seal and shaft thus maybe keeping dirt and debris out . I like to grease the shaft and contact point of seal when able . If that rubber wears away then the spring comes in contact with the shaft thus if not caught in time will wear a groove in shaft . Which then usually the shaft has to be replaced , welded and machined , or resleeved and hopefully that is the least of your problems .

I was there from 2004 to 2008. I came there on March 2004. I was in the CM shop, Alpha company. When you do a mission delete, all the components stay on the truck and look normal. The EGR valve won't function and the EGR core will be blocked off. And you just put a hole in the DPF filter. The main problem is that you have to be concerned about overheating the turbo with a bad tune.

Good afternoon, I was wondering if you could recommend a good shop in the Monroe / Toledo, OH area to do a inframe rebuild. On a Detroit 60 series 14l

Can we buy an OBD type and plug it in. Have you done a video on how to plug it and how much is the cost?

I'm kind of curious. If a truck has a smart idle system in which the engine is running at some capacity ( I'm not sure how much,) how much would that count towards the mileage/hrs of an overhaul?

Take the amount of hours and divide by 24 to see how many days that truck has been operated for. Then subtract 10 hours for every day to get average total load time

Awesome video just wish you would've focused more on engine. You told us at the beginning that a rebuild could cost 40k or so. I'm worried about the MOST expensive repairs when buying a used semi..not shocks , brakes , tires ect (which can add up yes but not amount to a small fraction of a rebuild). More engine checks woulda made this video a 10. Other then that 2 thumbs up!

Looking at a 2013 Volvo vnl with 678k miles , manual transmission and a isx15 and a 2017 Volvo with a D-12 I shift 800k miles- I’ve owned both of these motors pre- def generation and both excellent motors. I would appreciate any wisdom. Thank you
