Eluveitie- King

What's cool about Eluveitie is that the "metal" part of the folk metal, is very much based on melodic death metal. Very cool blend of genres

They often sing in Gaulish which is an extinct language. This alone sets them apart from other folk metal bands. Two of my favorite songs by them which have a great video are Inis Mona and The Slumber.

The U.S.music scene is like a giant wet blanket. Grateful to youtube and folks like you who are curious. The best action is in Europe and Japan right now. The mainstream music industry here, including the press, seem determined to keep us stupid.

Eluveitie-Havoc Off their album Helvetios The whole album is the story of war between the Gauls and the Romans. I'm a long time fan of these guys and this album is probably my favourite.

"I feel like I'm at home" - you're right, folk melodies are playing in our blood and bones if you know what I mean. It's primal. It's instinctive.

A most creative way of playing the Hurdy-Gurdy there in that break-down. Like a super fast guitar riff.

Honestly the entire Ategnatos album is amazing front to back. And a lot of it ties together through songs. The chorus in this song appears in a couple other songs in different ways.

You would love their liveshow! Probably the most brutal (still friendly) moshpit ive been in. Especially since it was in switzerland the singer joined the crowd for a song to experience his own band from our perspective.

If you want to hear more of Fabienne Erni (the female vocalist in this lineup) but in a more pop-metal/gothic metal context, I recommend her side-project ILLUMISHADE. Also, the former vocalist Anna Murphy (from the Call of the Mountain era of the band) has a new band called Cellar Darling.

Now I can scratch "Witness Hurdy-Gurdy metal" off the old bucket list. I loved this

Former Eluveitie singer (and hurdy-gurdist) Anna Murphy has her own band, Cellar Darling. The video for the acoustic version of Death was filmed in their own homes/local studios during lockdown.

These guys live are amazing. They toured with gone in April. Great show in Portland

Along a similar thread as Eluveitie is one from the band Apocalypse Orchestra - "The Garden of Earthly Delights". It's kind of Gregorian chant medieval music meets metal.

I saw Eluveitie live last year and it was phenomenal. You could hear every instrument clearly and they were crazy tight

This 'at home' feeling ur describing is actually, what Eluveitie try to accomplish with their music. The singer duo once said in an interview that they try to invoke the feeling of home and being happy about it with their sound. For them its obviously the great mountains and mystical folklore in switzerland, but I feel like it could trigger for anyone. I am swiss myself, so I get exactly what they were going for. Cool to hear someone express the same feelings, especially when theyre not native :)

I really love Eluveitie they have so many great songs, Omnos, Everything Remains as it Never Was, Call of the Mountains, and so many more :D

I have seen them perform live a few times now. They are incredibly good. Best performance I witnessed was at the Turbinenhalle in Oberhausen (Germany), stayed in the pit for the whole concert. \m/ :D

This band combines my two favorite genres of music, traditional Celtic, and metal and I totally understand what you mean about feeling "home." It stirs my ancient Highlander warrior soul. I had never heard this band before seeing them live in a small hall. They blew the roof of the place. That was the old line-up with Mary Murphy on vocals and hurdy-gurdy. This version of the band seems even heavier. Hope they tour the US soon.

Eluveitie is one of the best band I have seen live and I didn't even know who they where when I bought the tickets, they toured with Lacuna Coil and Infected Rain last fall but Eluveitie blew pretty much everything away. Fantastic show. They are definitely a must see band live.

Hey! I'm actually here after watching your reaction to The Islander. If you want more folk metal, I recommend a small band from Australia called Valhalore. They are a great cross between Viking and Folk metal. Their songs Solace/Solitude is amazing and very much like The Islander. Legacy is a great heavy song from them with an amazing music video. They definitely deserve more love and you having them come on your channel I think would be awesome for them!

Hell yeah! Now if you want more, I suggest King. Also, Ambiramus, if you want to hear a slightly different and more melodic sound from them.

I grew up in the 70s listening to the likes of Steeleye Span. They did everything from a capella Sea shanties to folk/pop-rock cross overs like "700 Elves" Folk and metal works! This rocked!

An Eluveitie concert is fucking awesome if you ever get the chance! :) And let's add Switzerland to the world tour list! And if you love folk/pagan/symphonic, you're gonna love Skalmod!

But i cant keep it in: you ARE at home atm XD Heilung may get your tribal heart. If you like Folk Metal you might wanna give a shot at In Extremo - Liam, Schandmaul - Sturmnacht, or for just Folk Faun has some good ones too like "Andro" (its a rather old one bit a gold one ^^) And ofc Wardruna has some very good ones too (Bjarkan is a favorite of mine^^ the one sung in a viking ship museum) Wardruna and Heilung also both make music for the vikings TV show and Heilung also made the soundtrack for a video game (Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice) Finally for a more metal heavy folk you should try "Equilibrium - Rise again" that could be for your headbanging needs. That said im not a fan of the vocalist growling i oftne feel like hes ruining the songs by opening his mouth but if you are into deep death metally growls hes your guy^^ Anyway "Rise Again" will make you headbang to a flute. that story alone is worth it XD In the official version they also use gopros to film themselves from their instruments view. bit scary with the singer but gives you a good look at their gear

Prepare to take that hat off to headbang and have way too much fun with the official video of Treasure Chest Party Quest by Alestorm. While folk or symphonic metal is not really my cup of tea, having a flute (or whistle?) solo in the midst of this sound is pretty awesome

I remember being to a pagan fest near the city I live. It's about 12 years ago when they were not that popular. I think it was 25 Euro for a day full of bands. Eluvetie, ensiferum, turisas, koorpiklani, moonsorrow, Tyr and Finntroll I bought a shirt from their slania album and lately saw that they released slania 10 years anniversary. They took the same cover and made the girl adult, she was a child on the original cover. That was a really cool move, I still have that shirt even though it's a bit short around the belly :D

Great one \o/ Eluveitie is one of the best unique metal bands of today, they deserve way more attention. Btw you're having a great guitar taste, i have a ESP Eclipse Standard with a ENGL Fireball, such a great guitar.

This band is fuckn amazing. There’s nothing else to say about em. I have a playlist exclusively for Nightwish, Eluveitie (sp?), Delain, Sonata Arctica, Sabaton, Epica, and some Wardruna, Heilung, Danheim, Unleash the Archers, & a few more songs sprinkled in. It’s my go to playlist for almost everything. The title of the playlist is just: 🎧🎧🎧

Theres an artist known as Patty Gurdy who does alot of hurdy gurdy songs and shes living my dream by being a hurdy gurdy player in a metal band. Patty does a real cool cover of Over the hills (and far away). She's in the next Ayreon album too. How cool is that??!

Maybe some "folk/medieval"- (mittelalter) rock/metal from Germany like in Extremo (it is in German). I recommend "Troja" or "Störtebecker" but my best recommend is "Frei zu sein"... In Extremo is one of the granddaddys of medival-rock in germany. Sry for my bad English Cheers from Bavaria

Isn't the thing about folk music that feeling that somehow you know it? Not in the sense that you heard that song on the radio sometime, but that it's a thing that's been living inside you forever, deep in your soul or your dna and somehow the best bands produce an audible expression of some instinct within you that was there in your ancestors eons ago and brings it into your consciousness. And then you add the energy of metal and it's off the scale.

You should also try Cellar Darling. Their previous singer with drummer (maybe some more members) have moved to that band.

The only suggestion I can really offer when it comes to this band is literally their whole discography, although the Helvetios album has a special place in my heart. I know exactly what you mean when you talk about symphonic and folk metal. You should totally check out some Tyr (Faroe Islands), Korpiklanni (Finland), and Orphaned Land (Israel). Those are some really different sounds but I think you'd love them all.

Just saw them live with Dark Tranquillity and Amorphis. It was amazing and I had to come back to this as Rebirth is stuck in my head ever since.

Fun fact, the primary melody of the song is an Irish song called "I am stretched on your grave" and the whistle solo section uses the Irish song "Lads of Laois"

The Hurdy Gurdy is such an interesting instrument. I've been fascinated by it since I first heard it on some punk/alternative thing 30 years or so ago. You could also check out Cellar Darling, Stormseeker, Patty Gurdy (who used to be in Stormseeker and recently did some with Alestorm and is playing on the next Aryeon album, "Transitus")...crap, I feel like I missing at least one more band that uses a hurdy gurdy.

I know im almost one year late but... Michalina from Poland (hurdy-gurdy player) started to learn playing this instrument after she heard it in eluveitie. Long story short: band contacted her after seeing her performance and now she is playing in band that was her inspiration to start playing and she has her own hurdy-gurdy shop. Tell me what you want but for me its fking imprsssing.

You could also check out Cellar Darling which is the band of the former singer of Eluveitie! Insomnia, Death, Freeze... many good songs from the newest album.

I've seen them live twice. Once with an older lineup that included Anna Murphy on Hurdy Gurdy and vocals, Merlin on drums and Ivo on guitar, now all in the band Cellar Darling. Also seen them once with current lineup. Awesome show both times. Great Live band. Got to meet the new Hurdy Gurdy player...she is super nice. Was supposed to see them September 25 but covid19 screwed that up. hopefully they come around again sometime. 😁

Missed the premiere again 😅 You feel like home? Maybe it's your Celtic roots speaking to your soul. All this while I thought the Celts came from Scotland and Ireland, but the Helvetians from Switzerland are also part of the Celtic tribe- where Eluveitie got their name from.

I had the same king of experience recently with symphonic metal. Here is my take away on why this appeals so much to me. I was introduced to hard rock by a friend at the beginning of the 80s with AC/DC, then in the mid-80s my cousin introduced me to Metallica and I was a metalhead for life, but as Metal went down the heavier and less melodic route starting with Slayer, then Death & Black Metal, I could not follow, so I stayed with my classic metal up to the Trash era. But recently I got introduced to Nightwish and everything clicked, this was the evolution of the complex compositions, time signatures & key changes, the Metallica of S&M, but with the orchestrations builtin and interwoven with the Metal sound from inception, so everything I like about Metallica, but just taken to the next level. So basically to me Symphonic Metal takes the aggression I love from Metal and makes a perfect marriage with the melodic charm of a full symphonic orchestra & choir, the best of both worlds.
