I decided to put my brand new Suzuki jJimny and my BF Goodrich KO2's to the test. I decided to tackle some of the obstacles at Hennops Offroad on a stormy Sunday afternoon. Watch as my girlfriend and I ramp the Jimny and then nearly drown it! Obviously we make it out alive, but what a great day out!

I still have two months left till new Jimny launches in my country Romania. I want this car so badly. I'm obsessed with it. Every single video or article I watch. I simply love it. I've heared that BF Goodrich MT (mud terrain) are very rough and this is not ideal for offroad. I've found a very good MT tire Hankook Dynapro MT, has a softer thread. What do you think? Yes I know I do all my homework for my future Jimny for a year ahead of its arrival.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 5 жыл бұрын
Personally I wouldnt use MT, but I also dont live in Romania :D The thing with MT is that they wear quite quickly, so you will need to replace them sooner than something like the BFG KO2.
@AlexandruCristianB
@AlexandruCristianB 5 жыл бұрын
@@RoamOverlanding I heared that life of BF Goodrich MT is estimated at 50000 km or 31000 miles, and is alot. MT are like 80% offroad usage and 20% on road. While AT's are 50 50 % off on road usage.
@RoamOverlanding

Have you got diff breather extensions fitted? It’s worth having them before wading in water which submerge the axle, otherwise the sudden cooling of the diff by the water causes water to get sucked into the diff and contaminate your diff oil.

Probably been mentioned in the comments already. There is no diff lock, it’s an LSD with electronic brake, basically traction control.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding 5 жыл бұрын
Aware :) Was just a slip of the tongue while we were driving, old habits! My previous vehicle had a rear difflock.
@DanSlotea
@DanSlotea 5 жыл бұрын
As long as the result is the same, does it matter? Just asking. Would a dif-lock be more than redundant?
@johnarmstrong6940
@johnarmstrong6940 5 жыл бұрын
Dan Slotea The result isn’t exactly the same. Traction control only kicks in when traction is lost on one wheel. It then electronically locks the brake on that wheel to fool the LSD to apply power to both wheels. The negative is that you first have to loose traction momentarily, so there is a delay. The pros of this is that you can turn sharply on the trail without axle windup. Diff lock when manually activated locks the diff fully, so you have permanent traction. If you have both front and back diffs locked, you have full 4x4 traction. If you are on a trail in a relatively straight line, you are gonna have far greater traction, no waiting on traction to kick in. The negative is that you have to disengage diff lock every time you do a sharp turn (small slight turns are fine). If you don’t, you’ll snap your axle because the two wheels on both sides of the 4x4 have different size turning circles and the axle will windup and snap or a wheel will jump in the air to unwind the axle. I believe this is the reason many modern 4x4’s opt for traction control over traditional diff lock.
@DanSlotea
@DanSlotea 5 жыл бұрын
@@johnarmstrong6940 Thanks for the answer. By "the result is the same" I mean the car will be moving forward instead of spinning the free wheel like the old Jimny. So is there a reason to install a diff-lock in the new model? Could there be any situation in which the existing traction control system could fail to keep the vehicle moving?
@johnarmstrong6940
@johnarmstrong6940 5 жыл бұрын
Dan Slotea for the vast majority of situations while 4x4ing, the traction control is perfectly well suited, no need for diff lock. Even without traction control or diff lock, the old Jimny and samurai are incredible due to their short wheel base. The issue with new modern cars, like the new jimny, is that you can’t make any serious modifications to the vehicle, otherwise your warranty is voided. So no big lift, no big tyres, no diff lock. I’ve got a SJ413 Samurai with rear air compressor diff lock and it is incredible. The only situation I can think of off hand were a diff lock would be better, would be going up a serious steep incline, were one would have to avoid loss of traction all the way up. If you start to spin on the incline, and it takes a second or so to gain traction, that could mean not getting up the hill to due momentum loss. I’m sure there are other situations. Whether the old Jimny with a diff lock is better then new with traction control, I’m not sure because there are other factors to consider. Weight, size, approach angle, bigger engine and so on.

This vehicle will change my life. I will keep it standard. Put a rooftop tent on though and a tow bar. Rent a Venter and go to Namibia.

@@RoamOverlanding then im buying a Venter. Even if it is only boerewors and pap for 3 months for dinner. Thx for the tip. I think the Venter will come in handy. Oh and best or worst part is, l'm only a long serving publick servant and have to trade my VW UP!. this Jimny will also be my day to day so the suspension will remain standard. But this country awaits for the Jimny, and me and my Glock 19, and my girl and my cat. But every bonus month will be an adventure into the unknown.
