You can probably roast longer if you increase the amount of coffee in the roaster as more beans will soak up more heat and stretch you roast out longer.

Thank you for the suggestion. That is definitely one way to stretch roast time. Do you prefer longer roast times your self, and is this a strategy you have used to that end?

@@cricocoo I do enjoy longer roasts of about 10-12 minutes with more weight of about 220-250 grams for espresso as I find the coffee fully developed and gives a nice balanced cup especially when paired with milk. However, for fruity coffees I prefer a slightly shorter roast of 9-10 minutes with around 200-230 grams as I find a shorter roast makes the acidity and flavours pop, whereas a longer roast mutes some of the flavours and adds balance.

Francis, how do you maintain a consistent temperature profile? Robusta seems to need a special kind of roasting?

Interesting question, thank you Pieter. With the Gene Cafe it is difficult to be very consistent if your environmental conditions are changing, but if they remain the same it is as simple as using the same settings. For this type of Robusta beans it needs special roasting because the density is extremely low. Other than that, in general Robusta has different "potential" taste properties than Arabica, so you might want to adapt your roasting because of that.
