I didn't realize you should let your batting get some air. Good to know. Thank you for saying so. The clamps are a great idea. And guess what I have some (several sizes). 😉

I watched this video recently and decided to give this method a try using my kitchen bench and putting a cutting board over the sink lol. It was fantastic. I made a queen sized quilt sandwich in about an hour and a half, with a break in the middle. I used the bench as a) the height is easier on my back; b) it's granite so I don't have to worry about the pins scratching the underneath surface; and c) it's probably the biggest flat space in my house apart from beds. Clamps cost me under US$10 on Amazon. I'm so impressed, I'd recommend this method to everyone. Thank you Rob for making my quilting life so much easier.

Your methodology for prepping the sandwich layers to be basted with safety pins is exactly how I manage my queen size quilts on my 3X6’ folding work table. Lots of running around, but with ironed layers and by beginning in the middle, it works reasonably well. I have rarely been troubled with gathers or pleats on the backing, thank goodness. ( as I am 75 and make quilts for family and friends only, I think they would forgive the odd fold😉❣️if it happens)

Thank goodness someone is showing how to get a "larger" quilt ready on a smaller work space. I have asked that question several times with no response. Not everyone has a huge table to work on and the floor is difficult at best. Bless you.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I’ve made a bunch of quilt tops but have yet to finish any of them because this part seemed so overwhelming to me. I have made one quilt sandwich- on the floor, which was very very uncomfortable, and I don’t have much confidence in the end result. I’m going to redo it right now to be sure it is nice and even from the middle out, and then I’m going to quilt that sucker, lol!

I use the backs of used cutting mats beneath the quilt, when I pin baste. I leave them all open & use a tool to lift up the tip of the pin so I can close the safety pin. I have 2 standard ironing boards to place to my left & in front of me at my domestic Husqvarna machine. It helps keep the weight from pulling my quilt out of straight...after petting it multiple times.

Three or four of my quilty friends get together at our meeting place for a “sandwich day”. To help make things more comfortable, we install risers to two adjoining tables. We each bring a few tops and it makes for a fun productive day.

Love this. The most recent quilt I did on our mid-arm we ended up laying a tarp out on our driveway to baste it. It was an adventure. I think in the longrun we spent longer basting it and getting it ready for the midarm than I spent quilting it on the midarm.

I always have issues basting my quilts. I have a domestic machine and quilt on it. I have watched many videos on how to baste a big quilt on a smaller table. I have clamps as well. But I never thought to just float the batting and the quilt top one too of the backing. I guess that helps the eliminate the puckers and pleats. Thanks Rob.

My husband and adult sons are my basting buddies. I can't pin due to RA in my hands and fingers (even with tool). I use 505 and work on a banquet table in the back yard. I do the layout on my 4x8 island, then fold back, adjust, and spray outside. Works great!

This is an awesome helpful video. I was looking for something just like this to do basing with pins. I believe this is the old-fashioned way. I’m a hand quilter and I’m a beginner so this is helping a lot. I still have to figure out how I’m going to hand quilt. My teacher has told me hey we can’t put this together until you figure out how you’re going to quilt itso it’s quite a challenge. I hope you’ll have somebody on sometime talking about hand quilting. Maybe I’ve missed it. Thanks again.

I too don’t have a large table, and can’t do basting on the floor. Bought 2” thick insulation panel and sawhorses. This makes an easy, lightweight table that is portable, and doesn’t take a lot of space to store. The foam is dense enough to be sturdy, and I don’t care about “pecking” issues!
