The Back Snapping Beat is a powerful tool of defense that can also be used as a formidable offensive technique against the opponent's sword. It happens in the blink of an eye and delivers a force quite unexpected. What you decide to do after that, well...it really is dealer's choice at that point.

Watching the video, you are also bringing your elbow back slightly, making the lever of your arm a little easier/faster to lift, and making it more likely that you are going to hit the weaker part of the opponents weapon.

In longsword you push the pommel with minimal right hand movement to get the snap. Nice idea!

This is a very valuable piece of information, and thank you Rob for sharing it with us publicly. Our group practices Bolognese Fencing, and we use a lot of rising falsi for beats that follow quickly with a counter. It's always been a challenge for me because sideswords can be a bit weighty and that reduces response time. I actually hadn't analyzed my form enough to see that perhaps this waving motion you're describing was a factor. I'm going to take some time and experiment with creating a more rigid lever with the hand.

I'm glad you talked about the tool you chose for this video in the beginning. I was curious as soon as the vid came up, knowing you favor a different sort.

I've been trying to work out why I can make this beat work with a rapier, but not a broadsword. Now I understand why. And know exactly what I need to do to practise better beats

Yup. At our school, one of the mechanics tough is to keep the pommel tight. Your video gives a better explanation. This is a great reference when people ask why! Nice one.
