In WWII Johnson went aboard a B26 bomber as an observer, filming sites for Roosevelt. According to news reports, the plane came under attack and then returned to base. For this, Johnson was awarded a silver star while the rest of the crew (you know the ones who actually flew the plane and manned the guns) received no awards. This event tells me all you need to know about LBJ.

This wasn't necessarily his fault though. I know to call Lyndon Johnson dirty would be an insult to dirt, but Douglas MacArthur gave Johnson this award because he thought it was politically expedient to do so! To be fair, the way Johnson flaunted it tells you everything you need to know about Johnson as well. He made up these wild stories about what happened on the flight, things that didn't actually happen!

LBJ had connections in the military industrial complex, his closest friends owned companies and industries that produced military hardware and LBJ knew if he escalated that war, that would benefit his friends and ultimately benefit himself as president from their support. John F Kennedy stood in the way of helping those friends of LBJ profit. There was only only one way to correct this issue, that was to get Kennedy out of the way. As to whom LBJ and J Edgar Hoover and George H W bush employed to do this really isn't clear, maybe the CIA, FBI, the mafia, or even a hired sniper, who knows. The one thing clear is they needed a patsy to put the blame on, and that patsy was Lee Harvey Oswald. But then i have a feeling Oswald was gonna be a liability to them if he ever said anything, so LBJ and J Edgar Hoover had a change of mind about keeping Oswald alive and had someone hire Jack Ruby to "tie up loose ends" as they say, with all the redacted blacked out lines in the declassified reports, evidence and the chief justice Warren commission investigation papers that were released, we may never know the complete truth of who all was involved. Just shows how much the democratic party politicians would eat each other up back then without feeling guilty as they are doing today.

Regarding Johnson - (1) Vietnam was a HUGE mistake from which the country never fully recovered, from a psychological standpoint and from the drugs which became prevalent in US society after so many troops became users to try to deal with the PTSD they returned home with. He also made numerous other foreign-policy mistakes. (2) While the goals of the Civil Rights legislation were idealistic, I don't think the pace and manner in which these were enacted was ideally executed - he was becoming more and more conservative, like his friend Connally (who switched parties) and I think the way in which he enacted this legislation was a big FU to the Democratic Party; he knew it would lose the South for the Democrats for many decades to come. (3) His role in the JFK Assassination and it's cover-up.

So dishonest and lastly cowardly to make some point by mixing up someone else’s words that in context disqualify it - makes me mad. If there is one thing that Rob Reiner is pointing out and should be with all of our leaders, are their backgrounds. LBJ had a fear of ending up like his father, a man who's life went down the tubes and became a laughing stock with the people around him. LBJ feared he would go the same way and that scared him into being very "pushy and dominating" to get things his way. He had to have control in order to avoid this kind of fate. Didn't want to leave it to others. Caro does a great job of explaining this and by reading his books you'll see why LBJ behaved a certain way. RFK and LBJ both had interesting ways of growing up.

On this I agree. ( And I'm a Republican) What Vietnam did was to undermined all the great things that Johnson was capable of doing to help make the 60's truly an avenue of future social change for the better. When that opportunity came he became trapped in the myriad of events that those times produced that foil even the best of dreams and intentions. At his core he was a new dealer. He was the product of the FDR road map to ease the burden of suffering that The Great Depression created. He learned what government could do and embraced it to solve problems and make things happen to better our society. Always a practical man, he learned the in's and out's of practical politics and used this skill to become an effective force. I doubt any student of his life would say that he wasn't the greatest Senate Majority leader of his time. But all and all, this isn't what makes you a President. That extra charisma, that extra polish and luster wins the day. It was true then, and it's true now. Things happen and life happens. Had JFK not been assassinated in 1963, then LBJ would have never had the opportunity to use his enormous political skill to affect real change in the American experience and been consigned to the backwater of political history. But he wasn't. But this enormous opportunity came with lots of strings. And at that time, in the here and now that was he had to deal with the world as it was.

He was the Devil. He was the 2nd Vice President to become President after the President he was Vice President for was killed in his homestate after McKinley was killed in his Vice President's homestate, Theodore Roosevelt's New York. Not a coincidence. While Johnson was still President Robert Kennedy became the 3rd presidential assassination in a row to be killed in the homestate of the next President, ex-Vice President Richard Nixon's California. Gore became the 4th presidential homestate incident when he was politically killed in the homestate of the Governor brother of the next President, Bush43, the son of a Vice President, Bush41, that wanted to be President again, possibly through his son. If Gore had won it would have been the 2nd time that Gore had defeated a Bush for the Presidency after defeating Bush41 with the help of Clinton in 1992. The same M.O., homestate conspiracy was used to defeat Gore that was used to assassinate JFK in Dallas. Both incidents benifiting the next President to become President_

Madeline Brown, who met LBJ in college and was LBJ's girlfriend, mistress, confidant, by all accounts his one true love the rest of his life, admitted after his death that he called her virtually every night. She first described his hatred of JFK and RFK and how they looked down upon him as an unethical hillbilly who they had to accept as VP to win Texas in the 1960 Presidential Election. This included the night before the JFK assassination and she states, after his usual rant about JFK and RFK, he told her that "after tomorrow those two will never embarrass me again. That's not a promise, that's a fact" She never admitted that conversation until after his death and Lady Bird Johnson's death because she said he was the love of her life and didn't want to embarrass the family.

Well, imagine that…. JFK and RFK looking down on LBJ as an unethical hillbilly…. Hmm… Maybe that’s because that’s exactly what LBJ was. It can get tiresome pretending someone to be much more than what he actually is. Now…. If you’ll excuse me I’ll be on my way to Texas to peel the letters “LBJ” off of a whole bunch of road signs. 😉Embarrassment.

LBJ would have meetings with staff while he sat on the toilet and made disgusting sounds. He was involved in the murder if JFK. LBJ had a son with Madeline. That son was killed. Madeline had loose lips after that. I hope they repented before they died. God is loving, forgiving and merciful. John 3:16 💕✝️🛐💕

@@meredithheadquist6657 - I’ve heard about his staff meetings in the bathroom when he was busy but not taking a bath or shaving. Ah-hem! He also was quite proud of “Jumbo” and had no problem showing “him” off. He’d take reporters driving around his extensive ranch. When he felt that he needed to visit the “little boys’ room” but there wasn’t one anywhere nearby he just took care of that right there - even when some of the reporters were women. Then there was a time when he was giving an interview to reporters in the bedroom on Air Force One. He was changing clothes. He was in his undies. The reporters were all men. That was inappropriate enough but then he removed his undies too and was standing there in front of the reporters in his birthday suit. It’s one thing for adults of the same gender to be in their birthday suits in front of others of the same gender in the locker room, but not anywhere else. He was crass, crude, disgusting, classless, unethical, lacking in morals and completely unworthy of the political positions he held.

Utter baloney. Brown's 'story' is a fairy tale from start to finish, and we know this, because the 'supposed event' at which Johnson said these things - and get this, per Brown not only Johnson was there but also Nixon and Hoover - COULD not have taken place. For one, Johnson's whereabouts on Nov. 21 are known, and he was nowhere near Brown nor at the place at which said conversation took place, you know, Clint Murchison's home. Problem there: Murchison did not own a home in Dallas then, but had his residence in Palestine TX. Johnson was nowhere near that hamlet. It's a juicy story. But is BS. And slander, to boot. Johnson had absolutely NOTHING to do with the murder of Kennedy, and in fact, looking at personal beliefs and achievements, LBJ was the bigger liberal than Kennedy. Problem was: LBJ lacked Kennedy's looks, charm and intelligence. And THAT is the sole reason the BEST domestic affairs president of all time, Lyndon Johnson, has been targeted by a bunch of Oliver Stone adepts who rather watch easy to digest movies and read tabloid pablum than actually study what the man believed and did.

Vietnam was a contrived enemy to make alot of people rich with Lbj's help. Look at the The Gulf of Tonkin Incident. There was no firing on a boat that was way out of international waters(see Fog oF War doc. or 60 Mins for proof .)Remember the constitution "enemies foreign or DOMESTIC"-founding fathers were aware of the dangers.

Important to remember that Vietnam was a war that never should have happened, but LBJ did not get us into Vietnam. Have you seen Ken Burns’ 12 part documentary “Vietnam?” It’s very illuminating. The US was still in “Stop Communism” mode when we got into Vietnam. We were not winning, but LBJ and Nixon after him escalated the unwinnable, immoral war and were dishonest with the American people. LBJ didn’t run for re-election in 1968 because the public outcry against the war was loud and clear. He regretted his decision to continue that war. He knew by then that he’d made a colossal mistake.

Being born in 54 my memory of JFK was his inauguration and death. LBJ was the first President I can remember. The movie has some very good insights into LBJ and the people around him. The portrayal of Sen Russell and the hardened attitudes of the South are spot. LBJ was a practical man who knew the times were a changin'. JFK got the nomination over LBJ because of his charm, looks, wit and charisma or the media which became the 800 lb Gorilla for White Southerners when images of racial oppression were impressed into the national consciousness. The Hollywood filmmaker purposely or unwittingly captures this aspect of American History. Today Trump is the embodiment of a post main stream media age with his election by alternate media, social media and ongoing tweets through social media. Through the eyes of an outside power like Russia the American phenomenon of an active press is apparent.
