Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 (2009) - Movie Review

Rob Zombie returns to continue his wild re-imagining of the Halloween franchise. With Laurie Strode in a constant state of PTSD from the events of the first film and Michael Myers aimlessly walking the Earth, we are set on a path towards an explosive ultimate confrontation of brother and sister. An overwhelming least favorite for fans and critics alike, Halloween 2 is a film that most people would much rather forget than acknowledge. Finding myself in the extreme minority that not only appreciated but loves what Rob Zombie went for, it's time to defend this criminally misunderstood sequel.

@Sam-tc2de Dude, I watched the movie. I've seen it multiple times, in fact. Rob Zombies' written dialogue never goes down well for me. Lmfao to each their own, though. The opening sequence in the hospital is badass and the best part of the movie. There are things i do enjoy about it, I just don't personally like the direction Rob took with Lori and the acid trip like sequences meant to symbolize her psychosis. I get what he was going for, but it's just not my kind of Halloween film.

Gabberman9000 Films While I agree with what you’re trying to say... what else would he call it? It’s a sequel to “Rob Zombie’s Halloween” so... “Rob Zombie’s Halloween: The Sequel”? Lol much of the marketing referred to it as “Rob Zombie’s H2” or simply “H2” anyway so I think it was differentiated enough. No one will get the two confused.

I don’t get all the hate for H2, it’s brutal and realistic. It shows how Laurie is dealing with the events from the first film and how broken she is. The atmosphere is creepy and gritty, and the kills are phenomenal. I like the theatrical cut wayyyy better bc it shows a damaged but optimistic Laurie but it doesn’t have Sheriff Bracket’s breakdown. Angry brutal Myers is my favorite. Scout gave an amazing performance

A lot of people hated the fact how could Rob put his hands on Carpenter's movie, how could he make Michael a hobo, adding everything you see in it, dirty, with all his symbolism, the people even wanted to make a petition to stop Rob from making it! Personally, i love it, i'm a very big fan of it, i totally get the hate and it's kinda impossible not understanding people hate it, i don't get why people hate Friday The 13th remake, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 Remake, A Nightmare On Elm Street i get why they hate it, same for RZ's Halloweens

This movie was awesome and completely underrated for it's time. You just have to understand where he's coming from about the mother and the white horse. Michael said when he was in custody in protective services with his Mom visiting that he always dreamed of her as a ghost with a white horse. That and the mask was just perfect for him and they had a great actor for Michael Myers. The original director may not have liked his direction, but I loved his new perspective of him. He may have been the first mortal Michael Myers, but that was actually fleshed out into what actually made him how he turned out.

This movie is just weird in my opinion. Sometimes I love it as sometimes I absolutely hate it. I do give Rob Zombie tons of respect. It does something different and I really appreciate that. I love Danielle Harris and Brad Douriff did an amazing job in this movie and how they took care of Laurie and were very caring in this movie. I don't mind Laurie slowly getting more and more crazy. I also love the way that they actually had Laurie discover that she's Michael's sister because that's something that they never bothered to do in the original Halloween 2. And I think Myers is brutal as fuck and I actually don't mind the "hobo" Myers cuz I mean that's what Michael would do instead of standing there in the jumpsuit and mask when he's not killing, and it makes the mask feel even more special because he only puts it on when he kills. My only problem is that I'm just not a huge fan of Rob Zombie's style. I love his cinematography (especially that fuckin farm or whatever scene where he fucka up those farmers), but I'm not a huge fan of the Rob Zombies music video style. But I don't know. And while I actually kinda like the way they went with Laurie, I do think she was a bit annoying at times but it's not that big of a deal. But probably my biggest problem is Dr. Loomis. I just don't like how much of a dick he is and ya it's supposed to be different and not like Donald Pleasence, but he's not supposed to be a huge cunt like in this one. Overall this movie is actually pretty good and a bit misunderstood Edit: and that white horse shit was just stupid Edit#2: are you gonna do a spoiler free review of Halloween 2018? Edit#3: nevermind u just posted it 😅

The movie was pretty good, in my opinion. But, as for all the Michael Myers supernatural shit, as well as his mom ghost, I heard that Rob Zombie's original plan was to have it be revealed that Laurie was the killer the entire movie, and Myers was a fantasy induced by PTSD. Kinda like with Chucky being in Nica's head during Cult, but both ideas were poorly executed.

Cody, thank you for clarifying the difference in tone between the Theatrical Cut and the Directors Cut. The reason I hated watching this movie so much is because I have only seen the Directors Cut. Yes, Laurie is very, very unlikable in the Directors Cut. So much so that I think that is what turned me off to the movie (that and the whole White Horse, Sherri Moon Zombie aspect that still leaves me shaking my head). I have never seen the Directors Cut of Rob Zombie's Halloween from 2007, just the Theatrical Cut. Now I really need to see the Theatrical Cut of Halloween 2 and maybe I will get a new, more fresh perspective on the movie. Yeah... Don't watch the Directors Cut.

Honestly, this movie is just a couple of changes away from being great, I would just take out most of the white horse stuff and make Loomis a bit more likable. Those were really the only two things in the movie that I hated. Other than that, I think Tyler Mane is great as Myers. I know this is a hot take, but it might be my all time favorite portrayal of the character. He is just terrifying to me, from the way he looks to the way he acts to the way he kills. Can’t say enough good things about Tyler Mane. That hospital scene is also one of my favorite sequences in the franchise. I never really minded that it turned out to be a dream since it showed us just how mentally damaged Laurie was after the first movie. I could talk about this movie all day, so I’ll just stop here. Great job with the awesome review Cody, this is one of the few times I agree with one of your many controversial opinions.

Man, I remember when Rob announced this movie, and hyping myself like no tomorrow dying to see this, because I loved (still do) H1 to death. Saw this early morning opening day... During the first 25 minutes, I thought we were watching a new classic, and potentially a superior sequel. As soon as Laurie woke up, the movie went downhill. Loomis was a greedy douche, and Michael went after random people who had 0 connection to Laurie (Save the tear jerking Annie death sequence), which was off putting. Incredible first act, lazy second act, rushed, but effective 3rd act, but not enough to save the whole movie. This movie had so much potential to be a classic on so many levels, but somewhere Rob said “fuck it”.

Thank you for breaking the mold on not just slandering the film. Oddly enough zombie didn’t even wanna do the second film, he was contractually binded. Love the direction he went for in two by making it his own thing. This film is more of a psychological horror and I love it for that like you said it really highlights the trauma Laurie and even Annie went through it’s quite realistic in that regard

I love you defending the opening sequence, it takes the terrible boring storyline of original Halloween 2 and recreates it into a badass 10 minute dream sequence - and I must defend the “die!” at the end, Loomis begged him to talk for years and that’s the only thing he says to him before he kills him?! I appreciate your review. Very professional given the fact that you're not a Rob Zombie but can still critique a movie for its art. I am not a Rob Zombie fan but i agree. The transition of Lorie from a traumatized girl to slowly connecting to Michael. There's also a sad scene when the sheriff's reaction to Annie's death adds emotion in comparison to all the other movies where we don't get the emotional side to the victims. We connect with the characters instead of them being just casualties. That was the missing element that this horror movie needed. Its really got all the elements especially the psychological aspect.
@ericmoss8928

I love this movie! In my opinion, this is the most underrated horror movie ever! I like how all of the main characters have changed since the events of the first movie. Laurie is a traumatized party girl, Annie is more mature, Sheriff Brackett is more protective of Annie and Laurie, and Loomis is a greedy jerk. Aside from Loomis though, I like all of the new portrayals. And yes, I still really like Scout Taylor-Compton as Laurie! I also like how Michael Myers is portrayed in the movie. The "Hobo Myers" thing makes sense to me. Michael can only be in so many comas and cults before it gets old. And what was he doing between the events of the original H2 and H20 (and Resurrection). It makes sense that he would be a drifter, Avoiding the public eye. And I like the mask too. Maybe the reason the mask changes between movies in the original series is because the previous one deteriorates quickly and he replaces it with a similar looking mask. But this mask is so special to Michael that he keeps it with him despite it falling to pieces. Annie's death is also the most depressing death I have ever seen in a horror movie. Laurie's reaction to her dying and Brackett's reaction to seeing her dead and his rage after that really sell it for me. Her death gets me every time I watch it. This movie knows how to show that murder is a painful, traumatizing thing and how to show the different effects of it with different people. I also like how Laurie finds out about her relationship to Michael. I find it tragic. As for negatives, I don't like Loomis and I don't like the White Horse thing. The amount of profanity is still irritating but it is dialed WAY down compared to H1. I also prefer the Theatrical version to the Unrated version. Mainly for the VASTLY superior ending, but also for the dialogue changes. Watching the Unrated version makes the movie seem completely different! Again, I really wish that the 15-disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray from 2014 would have included the Theatrical versions of RZ's H1 and H2. At least I still have the DVD copies of them.

A spot on review of the Halloween series on a whole, and a helluva thumbs up on this review. Many similar thoughts on the great parts and the bad, not to mention a simultaneous exclamation of what was the worst part of this sequel..aside from the overdose of SMZ looking like she did in the Living Dead Girl video, that all of us but RZ had to painfully endure. Octavia Spencer has one of the harshest deaths of any Michael Myer's kill. There are times I can't even watch it depending on my mood. Overall, I have an issue with the timeline here. Is this supposed to be the 70s? If so, why is Loomis on a late night show with Weird Al? My understanding was that it was still supposed to be in the 70s, but I can't ever tell because he always uses that tone. As for Laurie, I truly dislike this version of Laurie. I thought she was annoying. I would've rooted more for Annie Bracket here.

I actually wish they had gone with Zombies original idea that made the white horse stuff make more sense. His original plan was that Michael really did die in the first movie. All the white horse and Michael stuff was supposed to turn out to be Lauries hallucinations while SHE murdered people (hence the dreams of killing her friends and her also seeing the horse). The studio vetoed it (because of the track record of slasher movies switching killers) and he had to make last minute changes to the script.
