Beginner question here. How do you resolve the groupings? In my head, each exercise doesn’t naturally resolve over two bars (32 notes). Do you just finish the two bar fill at where ever you are within the groupings pattern? I hope my question makes sense. Love your videos. Father of a drummer, trying to learn to help my son on his journey (whilst learning myself). 👍🏻

Thanks Rob I have been working on these groupings since covid19 hit. What I'm doing now with them is constructing phrases . So you will come out of the phrase on the one . Anyway like you said the possibilities are endless. One of the things I like about this concept is how it can phrase over the bar line. I'm going to apply permutations to this concept and polyrhythms and metric modulation. This is the kind of stuff my brain has had stored for years but wasn't quite sure how to get it out. Its amazing once that creative bulb goes off. The possibilities are endless!

Also, I found sometimes for a 7 not group it's really interesting to to lead a 7 stroke roll with the left hand (LLRRLRRLLRRLRR no rest straight 16th note). You can come up with some pretty off the wall sounding stuff once you get that down.

Love this lesson ive done the three just a basic ghost note groove but the 5 and 7 add so much complexity and realy only take some counting and a little dynamics thanks Rob deffinitely the best drum teacher on KZfaq

if you guys know the funk song "if you have to ask" by the red hot chili peppers, the main guitar part is an odd 3-sixteenth note grouping ostinato with accents every 3rd 16th note. you can google image the sheet music for a visual.

Absolutely doing this all day on my Flamenca . Thank Rob ! The real thing is, set up a groove for two bars (one that is smooth and comfortable, experiment with plugging two bars of polrhythm in and note how the groove feels bad in the experimental section. Let your ears and body tell you when it starts to work, sit with it for a while, once it feell like a musical phrase and comfortable (as opposed to the formula and uncomfortable ) try out another idea in the second half. Modular approach to ear training and technical comfort..... nice ......all that is missing is harmony....

You are one of the few drummers I have seen using straight stands only. Is it just preference or some secret I do not know of? Great grooves. Show me a gravity blast, uhh I mean a one handed roll. Sorry my metal side gets the best of me.

Hey Rob, I noticed that your playing on the Yamaha Birdseye Maple Absolute Hybrid Kit. How easy to you are those drums to tune? I have the Yamaha Absolute Hybrid maple red autumn kit for my rock,metal,progressive rock, stuff. Can you tell me how you tune the top and bottom of your toms. My kit is a 9 piece and it sounds great. Also I have a Yamaha Live Custom Oak Kit and they definitely have a different pleasing sound than the maple kit. That one I like more for R&b, pop,Jazz,fusion music and dance music. You can see my 343 drum covers I have done on my red kit, Live Custom Oaks,Dw Collectors, Yamaha maple Customs which I don’t have any more,except for the 90s Dave Weckl Signature snare.Yamaha hip gig kit that rocks. I just want to get the most and best sound out of my Yamaha drums the Hybrid Kit. Colin

Everyone works on odd groupings in Fills and SoLOS. 😊😊😅,,, but hey,,, guess what….. they can be imbedded in Your Grooves as Well with super interesting Results…….. go do iT.😂
