Your boy, Kit, from the United States of Barbecue. You're a good teacher and a bada** drummer. This helps me out a great deal with my solos. I play blues.

Right hand lead is a great tip for playing on the drum kit. Helps to build a solid groove. The Elvin Jones style, inverted paradiddles and paradiddles are good ways to move around the kit. Not sure if it started with Elvin, but a dominant right hand is a big part of what I've often heard called Elvin Jones style. I recently saw a video of Steve Jordan saying many famous rock drummers had the "roll" in "rock n roll" because of Elvin Jones' influence. For drummers learning this concept, an easy way to see how a right hand lead helps strengthen your groove is to play a simple rock beat (4/4 with eighth notes on the hat, kick on 1 and 3, and snare on the backbeats). On beat 4 of every fourth bar, play two eighth notes on the snare drum; a simple fill. First try the fill RL, then try the fill RR. Most likely, you will notice the RR version sounds more consistent and has more precise timing. By playing RR your right hand doesn't have to stop and start. It keeps playing the same thing as on the hi-hat, except on the snare drum.

This is a very similar method that my old teacher used to teach me how to fill, groove, and solo. Use your right hand to lead the "melodies" around the kit and let the left hand fill in the gaps. Mentally, you are no longer cluttering your brain with complicated stickings and rudiments. Just think of how it sounds, and play it. No more paradiddlediddle double diddle single single blah blah.

Nice Rob, simple stuff goes along way. For the newbies not knowing he is doing if Rob didn't mention it...Ex1 is RLL over 4 which will eventually resolve back to RH on 1 again (on the 4th bar); Ex2. i believe are inverse doubles, leading with the RH accent goes you the fell that you are accenting the 1st note of the doubles; Ex3 is just playing paradiddle all accents with RH. This is a great exercise even playing on the pad RH lead then switching the LH playing the accents. 5 stars again my man Rob - UDAMAN!!

Another great video .. I love the concept .. am having a hard time hearing and grooving the first pattern .. (finding my way back to "1") .. I know the pattern is generally RLL RLL ...... but I know you break out of it at times to get to multiples of 16 .. I would love to see the full sticking of a bar or two of this first pattern.

Hey Rob I just wanted to say thank you so much for your awesome tutorials. They have been very inspirational to my playing. I had a question about the Herta Rudiment. Carter Beauford is the main drummer that I see using this Rudiment alot and sounds amazing every time. It would be awesome to see you demonstrate the Herta on your Kit and give us different ways to apply it around the kit.
