Is it just me that sometimes watching him makes me so emotional. I think he is the huge reason that i love football/soccer. The simplicity but yet gifted and sophisticated. Its simply out of this world. I missed michael jordan's era in another sport, also i would include roger federer still going strong, but i am glad to say that i witnessed messi era with soccer. I would also add he looks at the referee when he shows him the yellow card and is humble and winks to him because he knew he was doing something unallowed when taking off his jersey. Cristiano is a world class player,no doubt. But, this year what Messi has provided to football in terms of dribbling (no showboating), scoring, assisting with his inch perfect passes are way ahead of Ronaldo's tap-ins, headings and showboating. Cris is a great goalscorer but Messi is complete package. This duo may not win Balloon D'OR anymore. They're in equal terms on Balloon D'OR for Madrid's influence. But, in fact, Messi is the best player of his generation and may be of all time. God can't make a more perfect player than Messi.

Arjun Saha The thing is, it is all on things he won in the year, and not how many goals were scored because that would mean Lewandowski or Cavani would be in third for the Ballon dor. Ronaldo won a load of competitions, helped his team get to the world cup, and much more so i believe Ronaldo was the correct choice this year, although messi showed more skill and many better goals, however that is not what the ballon dor is about.

If not goals, because going by what you said, Messi also helped Argentina to qualify, had more influence in the team, but on the other hand, Ronaldo scores but can be done without him, the finals of the Euros is an example, he was average and did not even play the finals but Portugal still won the competition. You're right. Ronaldo is nowhere near him. I don't think he care about ballon d'or anymore though. We've seen it in the way he's currently playing. He is now creating more chance for others than for himself. He is therefore not selfish and not driven by his own ego, and i respect him for that. If real Madrid want to make CR7 be their main goal scorer, just so he can pile up goals and proclaim himself the best, then so be it. No matter how many goals he score he can never do what messi does.
