TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 - Intro solo
0:48 - Welcome!
2:07 - The lick
2:43 - How are we gonna break this down?
3:27 - The diminished scale(s) explained
5:17 - What notes are ‘outside’ here?
11:42 - Where the b2 is found in the lick
14:31 - Timing. This is CRUCIAL
15:27 - Bonus content for bulletproofguitarplayer.com
Robben Ford is one of my favourite blues guitar players and a trick that I learned from him years ago was his use of the half/whole diminished scale over blues progressions.
Robben likes to use this scale to create tension over the I chord right before the chords change to the IV chord in a 12-bar blues. This scale is great for creating tension because it contains notes that are found outside of unaltered dominant 7th or major chords, which are the chord types most commonly played in 12 bar blues progressions.
In this episode of Spicy Licks, I’m taking you through a Robben Ford inspired diminished blues lick that uses the half/whole diminished scale to create tension over the I chord. This tension is released as soon as the chords move to the IV chord and you land on the root of said chord.
I always like to explain the theory behind the licks in this series, and so I’ll take you through a few key points that you’ll need to understand in order to execute this lick correctly as well as understand how it works.
So, you’re going to learn about the construction of the half/whole diminished scale, what notes from this scale can truly be considered ‘outside’ in the context of a 12 bar blues, and we’ll also touch on timing - it’s absolutely crucial that you understand the timing of this lick because without that, you’ll have a hard time landing on the right notes at the right time.
The bonus content for this lesson - available exclusively to members of bulletproofguitarplayer.com - includes:
Video of the intro solo with TAB (downloadable Guitar Pro & PDF files)
Blues Shuffle in A Backing Track (video & downloadable WAV file)
Three bonus lick lessons that use the half/whole diminished scale in blues progressions (downloadable Guitar Pro & PDF TAB files)

OK, Ross. Herer's my message I should have prob'ly shared a while ago. My story is a little different than yours. I used to play guitar totally by ear, learning with others and from others in blues/jazz workshops. Got some playing in jam sessions and pub gigs under my belt - all of that like 20 years ago. Now after having raised my kids a trifle and getting to grips with the professional path I chose, once again I manage to find half an hour or a full hour to sit with a guitar and crack my fingers bending again. And here comes you with this very distinctive kind of serving attitude that shines through all you do here. It's as if you were running to record a video strip to share some idea that you have designed or learned from somebody. Others have already complimented the composition and flow of your videos. What I would like to pinpoint is that your use of "call and response" technique is splendid - it truly guides watchers' attention. What I personally love is that you link so many dots from within guitar practice, musicality, music theory, your personal experience growing with a guitar on your lap and kindness towards the listener that you've managed to re-energise old mans' joyful and mindful playing. Please accept my sincere gratitude for your work. BTW: Your pronunciation is bliss for a non-native speaker educated in high-brow standard English. For me it is like listening to a fresh and insightful manner of phrasing on an instrument ;-)

Thanks for putting soooo much effort into these. A resource like this back in the sixties would have been useful, to say the least. I had "Mel Bay Guitar Method Grades 1-7". It was wretched. Never practiced and sight-read everything (poorly). All the teacher did was puff on Winstons and write the fingerings over the chords. Put me off of playing until I was 17. I'll see myself out.

Other than the playing, which is great, I like to point out that the format and presentation of the video itself is very good. It's all I want in an instructional video: accessible, clear, structured, bite-sized, the illustration of the concept is good (we can hear it, we can read it, and we can use the video to navigate - the shot helps), and gives enough information to help us develop our own ideas.

Obviously, the live scene has taken a serious beating of late but do you plan any live dates at all? Not sure if you have a band at the moment? If it wasn't for the pandemic Josh Smith - who I'm sure you'll know - was booked to play Aberdeen last year.
