Ready to break out of that decade-long minor pentatonic rut and start playing blues solos that HIGHLIGHT the chord changes? 🤔
🎸 Check out my book ‘Beyond Pentatonic Blues Guitar’ 👉geni.us/beyondpentatonic
🎸 Don’t know me well enough yet? That’s fair! Here’s a FREE blues improvisation masterclass so you can figure out if I’m full of sh*t or not BEFORE you buy from me 👉www.bulletproofguitarplayer.c...
------------------------------------------------------------
Do you feel like you run out of ideas when you’re soloing? Like you’ve played every lick that you know and can’t possibly think of anything else?
If that’s the position you are in, I’m guessing that your solos currently consist of a series of licks you’ve memorised over the years that don’t make much logical sense when thrown together in the context of one solo.
The best improvisers are, in my opinion, the ones who are able to develop the dynamic of their solo and tell a story with the notes that they play from beginning to end.
So how do you go from playing solos that sound like a bunch of memorised licks thrown together at random, to playing finely crafted and developed solos that are actually memorable for the listener?
Well, using a concept called a ‘motif’ would be a great start. A motif is a small chunk of musical phrasing that you can repeat and alter in different ways throughout the course of your solo.
Listen to my solo at the start of the video - there are three small phrases I repeat throughout it. Three motifs. I played the SAME three phrases TWO TIMES each within the space of around 30 seconds.
So, when players come to me looking for soloing advice because they feel like they don’t have enough licks, I’ll ask them - well, why don’t you repeat the licks you’ve already played?
There is no rule to say you can’t do that!
Turn some of your phrases into MOTIFS and use them to DEVELOP your solos in interesting ways.
In this lesson I provide suggestions for things you can practice doing to get started with using motifs in your playing, and in the EXTRAS section of bulletproofguitarplayer.com I provide more examples of using motifs in your lead playing as well as the TAB and a video breakdown of the intro solo.

What a brilliant lesson! I realised that I've heard motifs all over the place, in all sorts of music, but it never really clicked for me how important they are or that I could actually do something similar. This will change my practice and my playing - thanks Ross.

Hat, no hat, You Rock! This made me smile since I've been trying this for much of the past year and it was your doing as well. I saw a video you did where you were showing something--I have no memory of what--and you threw out a couple fast bad-ass licks and I ignored most of the video except for my attempt to learn one of those long convoluted licks that you just tossed out. It took me a long time to get the lick and I loved it...so much that I tried it in other positions. It worked great in 4 positions so I added them to my improv and then started to add or subtract bits and timing and starting places and it was magical. I learned it such that any key works well, no thinking involved. But me being me, 69 and only a few years at it, it takes me a lot longer than it might others, but it is none-the-less a blast to do and you were the impetus. These hints/lessons are priceless. Time to get back to Bulletproof (I got it when it was starting on Udemy). It was initially over my head. I think I'm ready now. Stay Well and Keep them coming.

Another great lesson Ross. I have your course and it has finally got me "understanding" music and the guitar. "The magic pill" of "memorizing" shapes and licks meant that I was leaving the musicianship to somebody else and just regurgitating. Memorizers eventually get the dry heaves because there is nothing left. I have not looked at a chord chart in over a year, because I can look at the neck and build my own chords and change colors with inversions and spreads etc.; see the arpeggios at an instant and how those scales and modes fit. Incredibly freeing. Now to prove that I am not a paid spokesperson - DUDE, you gotta re-record your course. I know its a lot of work, but the first thing I thought when I started watching was, " What kind of parent would let their 8-year-old get a tattoo?" Not to mention that your lighting, composition, audio and post production are getting SOOO much better. Also, you now look like a 14-year-old with a tattoo. There are a lot of great content providers out there, but between You, Quist, Fretjam, Jens Larsen, David Hamburger and Corey Congilio - I am finally getting where I want to be - having fun every time I pick up a guitar because I am understanding where I am on the instrument and where I can go from there. Thanks.

i second his course! it got me started looking at guitar differently.. and he is open about the shortcut stuff... i dont go to him exclusively, but his fretboard memorization stuff and visualising patterns and such definitely improved my vision. and lets be honest: money talks in this world: 12$ per month, full access... theres courses which charge a lot more, might be more choices... but if you understand his courses...yea man, you can play music!
