’Rock DJ’ was the first single to be taken from Robbie's third studio album 'Sing When You're Winning'. First released in July 2000, the ground-breaking official video was directed by Vaughan Arnell, who had previously worked with Robbie on the videos for 'Angels', 'Let Me Entertain You' and 'Millennium'. At the 2001 BRIT Awards 'Rock DJ' won the British Video of the Year and British Single of the Year.
Both the single and album went to No. 1 in the UK. ‘Rock DJ’ was written by Robbie with Guy Chambers and Kelvin Andrews, while its clever use of a sample from Soul legend Barry White's 1977 single 'It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me' saw additional co-writing credits for Nelson Pigford and Ekundayo Paris.

Assisti esse clipe em pleno meio dia quando cheguei na escola em casa na mtv em 2000. Eu estava na pré adolescência. Hoje estou com 37 anos faz tempo hein. Parece que foi ontem. Since his teenage days , they used to bash him left and right, spread fake news, stalk, trash him and his work, dehumanize him to a point where he had a few meldowns, developed some long-term traumas and felt mentally safer living in the USA (not exactly in this order) cuz nobody knew him there and American media didn't really care about him at the time.

@@rdsox86 The first time I heard it in the states was on a VH1 special about "most controversial music videos" or some such, circa 2005ish I believe. I was enjoying it at first and it...it just...escalated so quickly. Cassandra is right, I experienced trauma but I still LOVE the song.

I’ve watched reactions to this by US individuals and they totally miss the ‘hi, it’s me Robbie…worship me….love me’ and he’s ignored. They just focus on the removal of clothes etc……… he’s a phenomenal song writer, performer, high functioning mental health individual who also has a brilliant sense of humour. Well done Rob 👍

He could just have fun without needing a woman to validate that. As can you! And us all. We don't need partners/to be paired up in order to have fulfilling, fun lives. As others have already said, the video is a commentary on how the entertainment industry demands more and more from its "products", using up every ounce of life in order to sate capitalism's insensate thirst for more. You can read it as "man gives up everything for women," but that's a more shallow view, and leaves other queries (such as why the man is so needy for the woman's attention, and whether the reverse is not equally true, that women must literally strip for the man's approval?) unexamined.
