the madness is often the " speculative mind". By that i meen the mind that try to anticipate things that is super hard or impossible to anticipate. Like short term fluctuasjons in the markets. The speculator ( in reality the gambler), thinks he/she is rasjonal because he uses " logic" or math. But he cant controll his own emotions ore anticipate the changes/fluctuasjons in the emotions/psycology of the masses SHORT term ( in the short term the markets is a casino, in the longterm it is a cashmachine). The short term speculator also think that all the other players think like him, but in reality a investor is never short term. always long. We can see the same in politics, people reading the news and think that they can anticipate what is going to happen next. And so they get distracted/triggered etc and loose focus on the task at hand in they`re own life. The larger " scam" here is that the media/adverticers and the profesjonals in politics/finance prey on the weak " monkey mind" of the masses and the masses need to be entertained ( and junk information) and too have cheap karbohydrats/fat ( Sorry for my shitty english).

The quality of being able to admit you're wrong is one of the most admirable ways you can be, especially in this toxic culture of egotism today, paradoxically. We all think that we need to be right about everything, all the time, to such an extent we can no longer just have honest discussions. Robert provides us a guiding light on how to do this with truth and bravado, and this conversation is a breathe of fresh air!

Dear Robert: You might like to know that my 14-year-old son, Soren, has read *The 48 Laws* multiple times and wouldn't read anything else for months. He finally compromised and read *The Laws of Human Nature* and is now working through *Mastery.* He's expanding into Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Emerson. I like to think that, with the help of your writings, he will become a master of whatever craft suits him and a deft navigator of life. On another note, you might not like to know (unless you welcome a challenge) that I was unpleasantly surprised at the partisanship of your discussion today. It struck me as condescending to portray those who are not on the left as simply brainwashed and in need of better psychological influence, i.e. slogans. Other great intellects -- Roger Scruton, Victor Davis Hanson (and from the past: Edmund Burke and David Hume) -- as you must know have a conservative bent that is thoroughly grounded in reflection and a deep study of history, economics and philosophy. Today I was led to doubt how seriously or consistently you practice the discipline of attacking your own beliefs. Zen is about finding reality, as you say, but didn't Edmund Burke, or your own writing on Little Ba Wang for that matter, open your eyes to the madness that can envelop the left, including its luminaries? Do you not see a madness possessing the left today as well? Or do you really only see this on the right? I would love to hear you converse on these topics with Victor Davis Hanson (an historian of war and classicist, as you probably know). After what I heard today, you seem in need of a good intellectual challenge. Ryan Holiday agrees with you too much, like a disciple, as you accidentally called him once. "Disagree with me, that there may be two of us!" All that said, thank you for your unique and practical writings and for helping my son to fall in love with reading and thinking. Respectfully, Alex Krantz

Wow your son is a genius in the making. But i wonder which life experience does he draw from inorder to understand 48 laws of power. I tried reading 48 laws of power when i was in college but it was too heavy of a book until recently as i was maneuvering through my entrepreneurial journey.

@@Zimboprenuer You're right; my son is too young to have much appreciation for, say, the lessons on betrayal--yet. From a very young age on, though, we all love stories, many of which contain lessons we don't fully understand until later. Most Aesop fables are like this. Robert Greene tells stories we all need to hear, but which are sometimes taboo, such as the genius of con artists and the latent sucker in us all. This, I believe, is part of the appeal of Mr Greene's writing. "Nitimur in vetitum" [We strive for the forbidden] (Nietzsche).

This bit was so good I had to come back to the video and replay the entire thing just to get at it. Thank you both Robert and Ryan. 25:33 More than anything, zen (buddhism) is a philosophy of reality. It's trying to connect you to what the world really is like and it starts from the premise which buddhism does. That your mind is inherently living an illusion because you're seperating yourself from the world and the world isn't like that. You actually are a part of the world that you're in.
@MattAngiono
@MattAngiono 2 жыл бұрын
Cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman has even shown that we're evolved to see illusion almost certainly. By using evolutionary theory he demonstrates we are optimized to see the world in terms of fitness paybacks, and seeing reality always requires to much from these finite systems. Therfore, we are guaranteed NOT to see things as they are, which is fascinating. Of course, we have science as an attempt to do better, but it's always going to be imperfect, because science can't prove truth, it can only optimize away from falsehoods. I think doing some meditation and exploring zen or Taoism can lead to great insights, but they are limited and can be prone to magical thinking, just like any religion. It's important to retain a balance, with self inquiry and criticism, as even intuition will lead to illusion, because it's based on the same systems at a subconscious level. If we believe our own story so deeply, then that becomes part of our intuition, and can misguide us in much the same ways. I think that's why science is still so valuable, as it allows us and even asks us to question everything (including science itself)

I want to be completely open minded and to question all of my core beliefs. When I step back and think about this pandemic, I just don't understand the current response. It made sense to shut down when we didn't know what we were dealing with and Italy's experience suggest perhaps a 10% death rate. But now we know the death for healthy people is less than 1%. There have been other rare instances of healthy people having ongoing problems with low energy and possible declines in brain function. How significant are these side effects? How can these small risks be worth shutting down the global economy? Are the restrictions causing more death, poor mental health, physical abuse, and drug and alcohol problems than it's worth? I can't see how this is not the case. It's like our governments are engaging in anti-cognitive behavioral therapy by encouraging catastrophizing. The thing is, we are not allowed to opt out. It's a totalitarian wet dream. Does anyone have any info explaining why this continued shutdown makes sense? Why not let healthy people decide whether they want to go about their business wearing masks? The at risk people can stay home and wait for a vaccine.

Activism won't change anything. To change the world you first need to transform yourself. Activists are generally not well educated. Society is becoming evermore complex. We need to be teaching models that show different levels of societal and personal development so that we can see the road that we need to travel in order to advance society to those higher levels. The mobile device has become a source of many things, pain and pleasure, but now its been weaponized and this isn't just tools/computer, it is a way of life now, it can be abused look what's happening with social media, and apps that cause tons of negative emotions. We humans don't know how to deal with it. Sure the disciplined discriminating mind lives a balanced life but what about young teens and adults, and families that don't understand what this tech is, and the nature of some of these tech companies... it is invisible to a lot of people.

Insightful as usual Robert and Ryan. I must say that I think " Yes We Can" was a viral Democratic slogan. It confers Hope after an acute economic depression

My complaint was the expectation that our brain is to RESPOND as fast as computers with information when our computers are slow to respond. Hurry up and wait. No silence while waiting.

It's always good to watch your videos and absorb the wisdom of yours. You're true on many things (especially about people's defensive nature). But no worries cause I'm reading LAWS OF HUMAN NATURE and I'm loving it. Thanks robert!

(Context 22:45) Robert it’s not that people just want the sugar pill or something wrapped up in a nice palatable fairy tale that is true. But Compare your book Mastery to Atomic Habits for example. Your book is think and huge and studious and it has got steps in there to take. Like looking at your childhood but the difference is that Atomic Habits is ACTIONABLE and genuinely leads to results affecting habits which in turn affect the 20k or so hours related to mastery. Mastery (the book) is long and theoretical and it (for me) doesn’t spark the feelings of affecting change outside reading a book. THAT’S the distinction I think most seek. Change.

Awesome conversation, thank you both for sharing. I have found much value from your work. Learning from history and from experts is great, but insight is needed to truly understand reality. You cannot derive Truth from the mind. Intuition is the higher mode of learning. All information taken from others is hearsay. Reading is helpful, but you also need to contemplate all that you read about, believe, and assume. Leonardo Da Vinci didn't become a master artist, sculptor, and engineer from simply believing the ideas he heard from others or from books. He contemplated and observed deeply everything around him. Check out The Book of Not Knowing by Peter Ralston to learn how this process works. ;)

The irony! Nobody in history has made more money off peddling Stoicism than Ryan Holiday. Unnecessary books on Stoicism, 100 dollar Memento Mori pendants, 400 dollar busts of Marcus Aurelius, 25 dollar Stoic page a day calendars. It’s disgusting really.
