As you get older, it's important to be humble and realize that you don't know everything. The more you learn, the more you realize how much you don't know. This is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. It's important to be open-minded and willing to learn new things. Don't be afraid to challenge your own beliefs and opinions. The world is constantly changing, and we need to be open to new ideas in order to keep up. It's important to be self-aware and to constantly question your own ego. Ego can cloud our judgment and prevent us from learning and growing. Be mindful of your own ego and strive to be humble. It's important to be patient and to take your time with things. Don't rush into things and don't expect to become an expert overnight. It takes time and effort to learn and grow. It's important to have a growth mindset and to always be striving to improve yourself. Don't be content with where you are. Always be looking for ways to improve yourself and become the best version of yourself.

Always thought about Robert Green’s philosophy as an anti-dark from the dark triad so to speak. And it would somehow corrupt my soul in some way. fast forward ten years later seeing these two philosophies play along and working together is sort of a great eye opener and humility..

I remember early in my stoic journey thinking it sounded like such a chore to have to be always practicing and thinking these things, I then realised your mind puts in all that effort anyway but it will be a bit of a d*ck if you don't take command of it and now it feels like something I'd be insane not to sustain and improve upon. I presumed the near constant depression and anxiety that led me to my 30s was just how I was but Epictetus, Seneca, Zeno, Marcus Aurelius and Ryan Holiday proved me wrong.

I love this idea of continual improvement and self work. The Japanese have a few philosophies that incorporate these ideas. One is adopting a "Waabi Saabi" mentality which is to embrace the perfection of imperfection, and "Kaizen", which is a continual improvement of self mastery. Wheeler's quote is actually a mantra that I tell myself on a daily basis, the full quote reads, "We live on an island surrounded by a sea of ignorance. As our island of knowledge grows, so does the shore of our ignorance." The zen metaphor is great, I think most hinduism and buddhist practitioners call those paradoxes that keep our minds stimulated "Koans". Kurt Vonnegut in his novel describes a couple that makes up a "Karass" & "Duprass" and they mentally play together using a language of "koans".

My wife and others are sometimes annoyed when I refer to decision trees and probability paths. Every possible decision has infinite branches, and when we make a decision, we cut off all of the other branches. Probability paths are the likelihood of events that affect us. There is a tiny non-zero chance we could get hit with a meteor. On the other hand, while we cannot control what happens to us, we can control our behavior in ways that direct our life path down avenues that increase the probability of preferred results. Not walking in the street substantially decreases the chance of getting hit by a car. Choosing a salad over a candy bar increases the likelihood of a healthy heart. We can affect the probability of results through the proper use of a decision tree mentality. Life is improbable to begin with - remember, your sperm was the winner! So you've already had a good start in the probability path. Don't make the sacrifice of all the other sperm a waste by not preparing yourself to make good decisions decisions.
