Ran into Mr. Orrall last night (06-15-24) in Gloucester at a John Butcher Axis gig with Sal Baglio and Barrence Whitfield as special guest (holy Channel days flashback!)! We were both sporting our Channel t-shirts so I of course had to grab a picture. What a great and humble guy, this song just oozes the 80s -- SUCH a great song!!

I recently moved and just now I was going through a box of memories when I found this little pile of Top 40 lists that our local pop station used to give out every week and my best friend and I would collect them. On one of them I had written a one word description of how much I liked each song, and by this obscure song that I couldn’t remember for the life of me, I had written “great.” So I had to come to KZfaq to refresh my memory. I wasn’t disappointed.

This great song got a lot of airplay in Boston at the time. Lynnfield High grad Orrall had several songs on the radio back then.

This has always been one of my faves, but about 10 years ago I was in a bar in Fort Smith, AR and Carlene has a gig across the street and after her gig she and her band came to the bar I was at. For some reason I was very drunk so I told her she sang on one my favorite songs, and when she asked me what it is i couldn't think of the name of the song for about 30 seconds or so. When it finally came to me her expression was total shock and she told she had forgot that song, and she couldn't wait to tell Robert that someone remembered it.

I knew Bob Orrall in 1979 and '80, when he was beginning his recording career in Boston on local label Sail Records. The band I was in at the time had the same management. I did a bit of lead guitar for him some of those 1st albums, notably Fixation. I remember when he released this song and the album it was on and we all knew he was on his way. This is a great pop song from '83. Really good. I had forgotten how good Carlene Carter was. Really sounds like a Stevie Nix type of duet here. It is SO Eighties! He's a huge presence now in Nashville and has become famous down there as a song writer (250 songs written and recorded by other people) and producer. Good guy, great talent.

Takes me back 40 years to grad school. Frequently played on the Chapel Hill station WXYC in the 80’s. I thought about it over the decades but could only recall bits of the lyrics. So great to rediscover it. I didn’t have the 45 but it got lots of college radio play. Loved WXYC. Got me through many late night study sessions. One of the great “call - response “ songs. CC’s voice is amazing.

I had the 45 for this song and played it over and over. When I got married, left my 45s and albums with my parents. I've missed it forever. Could not remember name of song! Remembered it was a duet with Carlene Carter and a guy, could not find it on iTunes or anywhere. Went through my 45s at my parents' house and found it! I love it just as much as I did in 1983. I had never seen the video until 2 months ago. It's the back/forth round/round endless nameless agony of relationships. I get the sense that in real life, they'd have the exact same dialogue 1,2, who knows how many years later. Both Carlene Carter and Robert Orrall sound so unaffected--just real.

You won't hear artists sing like this today. The authenticity and vividness is drained out of much music these days with technology. Just the minor vocal quips are a beauty to behold, and I like the slight chemistry that comes through the both of them despite it being a breakup song. Like many have said here, it should have been a much bigger hit nation-wide!

Amazing, I missed the first time around when in to 80s Top 40 as a teenager but became a huge Carlene fan in 1993 with Every Little Thing and did a dive back to eventually 1977. I found this on a Hard to Find 45s cd. I wonder why she never put it on any record, including her excellent Hindsight comp cd? Turned out, she matched her hubby Nick Lowe with a Top 40 hit. OK, nice melody, but there is quite a bit I don’t understand about this song. 1. “But you know where I’m going tonight. You can find me where the feeling’s all right.” In other words, “Um, honey, I’m going out to the club to pick up some other dude to fuck, OK?” 2. “I didn’t wanna do it, but I couldn’t say no.” “Yup, I fucked another dude. I couldn’t help it, I was really horny.” 3. “I’m not about to let you walk away; I thought I’d walk away from you someday.” “Don’t leave me, babe! I want to leave you first!” This is not likely a winning argument if you’re trying to persuade a woman to not leave you, am I right? 4. “You talk so tender, then you run out of gas.” Well maybe this explains Nos. 1 and 2. He’s got erectile dysfunction, is that it? Is that what this song is about? If not, please explain.
