Robert had an interesting career. He had his 1970s successes ("Doctor, Doctor", "Sneaking Sally Through.the Alley"), faded for a bit, became the rock critic for the New York Times, and used that visibility to jumpstart his comeback (both as a soloist and, as noted, in the supergroup The Power Station). And then he died, too young. "Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky", to quote the lyrics by Kansas. (Have you done Kansas yet? Do it. Not just "Carry On My Wayward Son", but "Icarus [Borne on Wings of Steel]" and other lesser-known tracks.)

@@rora2297 Wow, really? I spent *decades* thinking it was so cool that the NYT had an actual rock artist as their critic, rather than some old grump who loved Perry Como or whatever. And then I was so excited for his 1980s success. Where was Wikipedia when I needed it? Apologies to anyone I misled. Thanks. (In my defense, the NYT''s bridge [Alan Truscott] and chess [Robert Byrne] columnists were world-famous experts, so I just assumed this was another prestige hire. But I guess games of skill are different than the performing arts.)

Here is a short history of this all time classic rock song. - "Simply Irresistible" is the first single released by English rock singer Robert Palmer from the 1988 studio album Heavy Nova. In 1988, the song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, being denied the top spot for two weeks by Guns N' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine."[1] It was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for three weeks.[2] It also earned Palmer his second Grammy Award the following year, and the song was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Single.[3]

Well, you wouldn't be totally wrong about the commercial part. This song along with the style of video and even Robert Palmer himself were in a few Pepsi ads after this song blew up. For proof, check out the trilogy of "Sailin' Shoes">"Hey Julia">"Sneakin' Salley Through The Alley", it's ten minutes of fun and three well interlaced songs. Also, in 1985 he first thought of that concept of using manequins as 'background players' for the video of his single Addicted to Love. At the time it was something that has never been done yet such a simple idea that he inspired dozens of artists to immitate him. Most famously, the video for Shania Twain: Man! I feel like a woman where Twain reproduced the same setting as Palmer but switched the genders as she sang while male models behind her 'played' the instruments.

Robert Palmer was the king of '80's glam rock. We saw him at the Amnesty International show in Oakland in the early 80's. He closed with Addicted to Love - you guys gotta react to that one! The next act was a very young Tracy Chapman. Just Tracy and her acoustic guitar doing Fast Car. The contrast between the highly polished glam show of Palmer and that young lady alone of stage singing her heart out was amazing.

And this look they did for several of his videos really had a huge impact. It's hard to overstate the impact music videos had at the time. This "model" video came out in 1988. There are actually two more "model" videos: ADDICTED TO LOVE (1985) and I DIDN'T MEAN TO TURN YOU ON (a cover of the original Cherrelle version), released in 1986.

Robert Palmer was great. Sneaking Sally Through The Alley is another great song with a very 70's vibe for something different...plus his time in the 80's supergroup Power Station (with members of Duran Duran) was excellent. A stylish and talented guy.

being a teen during the 80s was great, MTV really gave us something different to do, you was either out side playing or indoors watching MTV, there was no internet, no pause button so you had to watch it closely. .lol Robert Palmers MV are classic

He actually has one or two more songs with what my dear old friend, Bob used to call "the slinkies:! LOL But if you want to hear a GREAT song by him you'd have to go back a few years to the Hey Julia/Hey Julia/ Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley medley. Or at LEAST just Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley!
