I have the same problem I am a big guy with a deep voice. I have to change my voice and be more fun to get dogs engaged. People have laughed at me but never has a dog laughed. I love training dogs and I always like seeing other trainers methods. Thanks Robert you are one of my favorite trainers. Please keep giving us your point of view. You are making a great difference 👍

More owners need to see this. So many owners have good obedience but the dogs drag their ass bored out of their mind. When you open up that possibility of fun and play it’s beautiful.

I love this! I tell everyone that has a hard time with recall to be as flamboyant as possible. Pretend you're the life of the party and you've just arrived to one. I hear too many people yelling "DOG! COME!" in an angry or frustrated voice.

Thank you so much for this! We have had several rescue GSD's and I love how intelligent they are. Our latest one (we've only had for a few weeks now) was a cruelty case and she's quite anxious, rarely wags her tail or wants anyone to touch her. I've been working on basic training but, watching this, I realise that I need to be a LOT more fun and way less regimented with her! THANK YOU!

Awe! So happy this owner enlisted your help. With my youngest dog, when I’m serious, he’s serious. When I go into play mode, he becomes the happiest, craziest “Frat Boy”. His favorite play activity is to have me throw his duck. He will bring it back 50 times. At least one of those times, I will chase him once he gets the duck. To see the look in his eyes and the excitement he has doing laps around me being “naughty” makes me laugh so hard!! He’s giant and looks like a galloping Clydesdale.

I love that you had a GDS like Annie to show how much engagement and and fun make them learn faster ❤ my Shiba Inu is a bit like Annie when it comes to shutting down with correction and I’ve been working on that for the past two months. By the way; great tip with the belly leash. The recall on long leash and no leash increased exponentially! I own a gsd who was ran over as a pup and has only one eye... and dog training was the best thing we did. We went for about 18 months (which i know is long but we eneded up doung tricks and advanced training after she graduated from her basic obedient class and got her k9 good citizen) and it def was the best thing we ever did together..she is still a dog and has issues because things surprise her on her blind side but i tell everyone who gets a dog to go to an actual dog trainer because training is for you too. Even now 5 years later we still are learning new tricks 😊 and this was the same style of training we did to keep her engaged 😊

This is such a great video. I am not a big guy. Quite the opposite I’m a small woman lol but I have noticed with my Rhodesian ridgeback tone is everything for her. It’s hard for me to maintain that enthusiasm she enjoys tho like it’s exhausting for me so sometimes I have to keep a session like that short. I have noticed this attention to tone the most during “heel”. Total game changer.

The owner is scared of her you can read it in his body language. She displays it in her motion, he commands to control her. It’s clear he has a respect for the dog’s capabilities. The fact he doesn’t want to give her a treat by hand shows a lot. She could have been aggressive but he has trained her not to be. She is scared to be a dog. I understand I have broken my dog’s spirit quite a bit, working to get it back. Some people have to learn to be dog people. I am one, at least he is taking the steps to get it right. I hope he does. Thanks Robert! I adopted a sweet lab/shep mix who presents this way. I have never had a dog that acts this way. I am going to have to look up working with a soft dog. This will help tremendously. I only ever did play training...but i have been considered a bit of a lunatic most of my life😅 im so relieved watching this..i had that bit right...im a short old bird but despite the appearance okay with big bad gsd...am going to get as a nenber..when i get help...

Just tried it and this helped! I have a lab who I do rally with, and it depended a lot on her mood. Which was ofc a bit difficult. I tried tugging with her but she’d just spin out and start doing the zoomies. Afterward I would need to put her up as she’d be too overstimulated and tired to train. This helped get her engaged enough without her spinning out

This video helped me a lot, have a 15 month old doberman who is super intens in almost everything exept obedience training. After a few session with this type of training is much better already.

Good job Robert , your right about training the dog to there drive and personality. I got two shepherds and when I take them to the dog park they know to focus on me cause I play the whole time with them . They don’t even look at the other dogs

Yeah with dogs like this hunting type of outlets our great,outing where you just let the dog be a dog/also hand signals non verbal commands,but with fun games and engagement, yeah play with dog,most the this comes from owners/trainers that have that type thinking "if I feed this dog it better listen or I will hit with this stick" in return shuts a dog down/and I see many that had the shock collar on act broken too,from the books I read in the lat 70s dog training was fun for the dog,building confidence, rewarding,you your dog our a team, ,the dog should show it wants to please you,,,,,,,,not bulling,spirit breaking, or forced listening

As they say, a dog is man’s best friend. You need to interact with them as a friend and not as a slave master. After all, they want to please us. Training should be something our K9 looks forward to and we use to build that bond.

You can't be afraid to be a bit silly! I find crouching low and high voice gets them going, especially for a come command.

Is there any benefit to dropping the treat rather than let the dog take it from your hand?

At 7.18 mark in the vid a caption pops up which says "keep corrections mild on a soft dog." I would think this could also apply to some dominant headstrong breeds such as in my case an akita, because altho' being a strong breed they can be very sensitive to overly harsh corrections. Indeed in certain areas of training, for the safety of other people and dogs a harsh correction must be administered and this is where an experienced balanced dog trainer knows where to apply the soft or hard approach. Doing what you are showing in this video is how I train my akita, but for an example if my boi suddenly went deaf for a few seconds and decided to totally disregard my instructions and go after one of those other dogs, I would then instantly gim him a harsh "NO" and then a quick jerk on his leash for a correction. I would also keep my training sessions short to keep my boi from losing interest in the sessions but do many, many sessions over a longish period of time. As many of your subsribers will well know 'patience and dedication to longterm training' is the key to having a well behaved dog.

I seen videos saying that trainers use commands in different language so other people won’t be able to give the same command I only know english and spanish can you show us how to train a dog to only listen my commands and not others?

So, Annie is a soft dog. What different strategy for a hard working line GSD. I train her in "drive" Then bring it down. I used to compete, with a crazy [brilliant] collie, and 2 GSDs, long long time ago.

Hi Robert! Have you done a video on keeping contact? If so can you link it for me!? I am wanting to start this with my BMD puppy but am struggling to find anything on it. For example, side stepping and the dog side steps with you. She keeps contact while heeling but not sure how to start teaching this.
