Disney Animation during their classic era is well known for recycling their own animation, but none are the best example of that than their adaptation of Robin Hood, and in this review, we'll look at this basic version of the tale, but this Robin Hood is still has a lot of the classic fun that Disney knew how to do best.

That deleted ending is incredibly underrated. Prince John may be known for being a goofy kind of villain, but having him try to kill Robin Hood himself after all that happened really added an edge to his otherwise childish personality. Plus, him being defeated by King Richard just showing up was clever.

Say what you will about the quality of animation from early 60s and late 80s era of Disney, but I really love the sketchiness and pencil strokes of it, I really do. It gives it a very organic and tangible as it gives that sort of feeling and look as a way to say that they were actual drawings with life and personality. Also, like what AniMat says, Robin Hood is a lot of fun.

On top of writing and performing songs for this movie, Roger Miller also wrote music for a Tony Award-winning musical, Big River, just seven years before his death. He even served in the Korean War, which he did so at only 17 and where he coined one of his favorite one-liners, “My education was Korea, Clash of '52.” He actually chose to enlist because he stole a guitar out of desperation to write songs, but turned himself in the next day and chose the Army route to avoid jailtime. His cousin's husband was Sheb Wooley and Wooley taught Miller his first guitar chords and bought him a fiddle. Wooley, Hank Williams, and Bob Wills were the influences that led to Miller's desire to be a singer-songwriter! And they didn't just retrace shots from the Jungle Book and the Aristocats, but Little John is Phil Harris, who also voiced Baloo and Thomas O'Malley respectively! For Robin Hood, he's voiced by Brian Bedford. Originally, Tommy Steele was chosen because of his performance in The Happiest Millionaire. However, Steele was unable to make his character sound more heroic, and his replacement came down to final two candidates which were Bernard Fox and Brian Bedford. Disney executives had first seen Bedford performing onstage in Los Angeles, in which they brought him in to test for the role in May 1971 and ultimately cast him.

Fun Fact on the Movie: Disney refused to show their animated classics due to theatrical re-releases until the 1980s when Michael Eisner became the new ceo and wanted videocassette sold however when Robin Hood and Pinocchio became available they were stupidly overpriced so renting would be safer than buying the movies. The next year Frank Wells & Michael convinced the board to sell videos for a discounted price to target family and began the infamous Disney Vault deal

Robin Hood trivia: Initially, Disney considered a movie about the European fable Reynard the Fox. However, due to Walt Disney's concern that Reynard was an unsuitable choice for a hero, Ken Anderson used many elements from it in this movie. Originally, Friar Tuck was to be a pig, but was changed to a badger to avoid insulting religious sensibilities. The Sheriff of Nottingham was originally a goat, but was changed to a wolf as they seem better representing villains. The characters of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Pat Buttram), Friar Tuck (Andy Devine), Nutsy (Ken Curtis), and Trigger (George Lindsey) were all voiced by actors known for doing westerns. This is because at one point in the production, the setting was the Old West. A few months before release, the Disney animators needed Sir Peter Ustinov to come back to the Disney Studios to re-record some of his lines as Prince John. The animators made phone calls to New York City, London, Paris, Vienna, and Tokyo, trying to locate Ustinov, only to discover that he was working at the NBC Studios in Burbank that week, a half-mile down the street from them! Sir Peter Ustinov also voiced Prince John in the German dub of the movie, but not King Richard.

Interesting facts about this film: Peter Ustinov, the voice of Prince John and Roger Miller, the voice of Alan-a-Dale were guest stars on episodes of The Muppet Show Louis Prima, known for performing King Louie in The Jungle Book, released an album based on the film called “Let’s ‘Hear’ It for Robin Hood” as compensation by the Disney company for not getting an opportunity to do a voice role. This film was the first Disney Animated film to be released in the Classics VHS line in 1984. The scatting of Roger Miller in the opening song “Whistle Stop” would be sped up and become the chorus of The Hamster Dance Song. The song “Love” was featured in the 2009 stop motion animated film Fantastic Mr. Fox and 2023 Amazon Super Bowl ad “Saving Sawyer”. This film was an inspiration to Byron Howard while making Zootopia. And last, but not least… This film inspired and mainly served as the basis for a KZfaq Poop by Hour of Poop titled “Friar’s Rubbing Wood: Fall of Nottingham”. Class dismissed.

Robin Hood isn't the only Disney movie that uses recycled animation. That practice was also used in other films like The Sword in the Stone, The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, The Rescuers and The Fox and the Hound The Sword in the Stone Sir Ector accidentally hitting Kay on the head with his sword (101 Dalmatians) Two knights riding against each other at a joust (The Truth about Mother Goose) The Jungle Book Three wolf puppies wagging their tails as they see baby Mowgli (101 Dalmatians) Mowgli being lovingly recieved by his wolf family (The Sword in the Stone) Baloo and Bagheera trying to rescue Mowgli from King Louie (The Wind in the Willows segment from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad) The Aristocats Marie being rescued by O'Malley and given to Duchess after falling from a milk truck (101 dalmatians) The Rescuers Penny running through the bayou as she escapes from Medusa (The Jungle Book) The Fox and the Hound Various animals taking shelter from the rain (Bambi) and a squirrel leaping to the next tree (The Sword in the Stone)

This was one of those Disney films I never had a copy of when I was younger (I had a ton of Disney VHS tapes and DVDs but we were missing certain ones such as Mulan, all the packaged films from the 1940's, Cinderella, The Black Cauldron, and a few others) and never actually watched in entirety until I had Disney + in 2020 during the pandemic. Then I finally got to watch certain films I never had as a kid and this was one of them. It is an interesting film as an animalfied adaptation of the storyline and I'm sure it inspired a lot of animal artists out there. Not the mention, it was one of the first Disney animated films to be released on home videos when Disney was against home media.

“Robin Hood” is certainly a Disney film that I really enjoy. While it’s not in my top 10 favorite Disney films, I’d say it’s definitely in my top 20, with its fun characters, charming humor, and interesting portrayal of the Robin Hood legend. Also, if you’re confused if you should laugh at the jokes revolving around Sir Hiss or admire the creativity with how he was animated, I’m simply all, “why not do both?” They help in fleshing Sir Hiss out to be another fun and memorable part of the film, similar to what they did with Kaa from “The Jungle Book”. Also, if we’re about to get chilly with the next review, and if it’s for a Don Bluth film, then it looks like we’re about to go on an adventure with “The Pebble and the Penguin.” That’ll be an interesting one to look at, but here’s my advice: don’t make Drake laugh!

It was like a short period where people jumped on this Disney hate bandwagon and criticizing the animation of some movies. Some of the criticism was that Disney has the money to make good animation and that they're constantly being lazy. Besides all that Tumblr nonsense this is one of my favorite Disney films. ❤️💖 I truly loved 😍 and enjoyed this movie 🎬 in my childhood! I always ♥️ watched this movie on VHS 📼 and I still owned the VHS copy of Robin Hood. True, it may not be Disney's perfect masterpiece films like Fantasia or the Lion King. But still an enjoyable fun family entertaining popcorn flick! 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️

Alright! NOW We're Talking! All to say I LOVED this movie, all the up to the day I was born! I mean that seriously my mom actually have stories how many times she would play this when I was little (More as a tool to calm me down when I would be grumpy). Even today I hold merits to know every scene, every line, every song, from beginning to end. In fact you know this is such a childhood favorite that even became a key inspiration for Zootopia if I'm not mistaken. In fact I even knew some people who still love doing the whistle stop bit, I even say it even taught me how to whistle. Honestly I'll say I might not handle some of the criticism consider it as a childhood favorite, but hey not everything is perfect, and I'm still glad how this turned out. I wouldn't even change a thing!

Ah, Robin Hood. A.k.a. One of my childhood movies. This flick was always a comfort to me whenever I was feeling down, helped by the great voice cast giving the characters a bit more depth than they would have in any other scripts. My favorite characters include Robin Hood, Little John, Prince John, Alan A'Dale, Friar Tuck, and especially Lady Cluck. Cluck and Tuck are especially high up, though, because the former is so unafraid of Prince John's actions that she manages to steamroll quite a bit of the guards during the archery brawl in the middle of the film. The latter reminds me of myself and to a degree my folks, as we too are done with the BS going on that hurts those with less power than them. Bottom line, this film is one of my absolute favorites from the characters and voice acting alone. Though to be fair, the animation is also really good.

This movie was alright. But I wish Robin Hood and little John had more screen time in the film because they kinda feels underdeveloped in this version. But This movie did give us the hamster song. So that’s already a plus.

Disney's Robin Hood is the most popular "kid-friendly" version of the legend. Though the real irony of the Robin Hood Legend: John actually did become king after Richard passed. John the first, last, only, and worst of his name.

Disney’s Robin Hood is another childhood classic of mine! The characters are a lot of fun and the slapstick is always entertaining. I always like seeing the recycled animation during certain scenes like “The Phony King of England.” I do wish that the deleted alternate ending was in the Final Cut however, it seemed to tie in the events better. Still, this film is always a pleasure to watch time and time again.

Thumbelina deserves to be in the section of Animat Watches just to see how cringey and toxic the movie is and how bad it aged; and when he makes a review of it, I'm sure he's going to be pretty hard on it. Same goes to A Troll in Central Park I haven't seen The Pebble and the Penguin, but I heard that it's Don Bluth's least bad movie from the 90s

@@jonnyboy4289 Thumbelina is also my least favorite Don Bluth movie and one of the worst animated films of the 1990s. I agree that A Troll in Central Park is easily Don Bluth’s worst film, but Thumbelina is horrible, as well, despite being somewhat overrated by nostalgia. Aside of being another poor Disney copycat, the movie's worst crime is that it feels way too old for a film of 1994; instead of being fresh and brilliant like the Disney films of the Renaissance such as The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, Thumbelina feels more like a cheap cartoon from the 1930s for its cheesy and old-fashioned content that didn't resonate with 1990s audiences.

In terms if the narrstive itself being kinda weak, that does kinda reflect the source material. Truth is there isn't actually any definitive single story of Robin Hood that was the primary source, but rather a collection of short stories, plays and poems all about the character (not unlike the whole scene with Robin and Little John robbing the Prince disguised as fortune tellers). Heck, even the oldest reference we have to Robin Hood is just that: a reference, and not the story itself. It wasn't until centuries later that writers started trying to create a single cohesive narrative about Robin Hood from all the short stories.

❤️💖 There is a Disney fan theory ✨️ that has been going on where Robin Hood is a prequel to Zootopia. Robin Hood was the influence and inspiration for Zootopia which is directed by Disney animator and director Byron Howard, who stated that Robin Hood was his favorite Disney childhood movie. 🦊🦊 Both Robin Hood and Nick Wilde are closely related to and Nick Wilde is Robin Hood's descendant. Both Robin Hood and Nick Wilde ironically dressed in light green 🟢. Mayor Lionheart maybe related to King Richard. Robin Hood takes place in Medieval times while Zootopia takes place in far future. 🦁🦁 Do you believed this theory? 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤️

I must point out some medieval stuff. 1. Maid Marian's outfit is completely historically accurate. Every piece existed and was worn together in the 1100s to 1250s. 2. Destroying pies would not go unpunished. The local Baker's Guild burned their hair off to make each individual one and they all got destroyed. Some heads will roll for that. 3. Anyone would be shot at for being in Sherwood Forest. That's the Royal Forest only the king can hunt in those woods. Yes, kings did abuse that power. They did make the entire 100 mile radius royal forest. They used it to control travel.

The problem with the plot of Robin Hood is not even the fact they skip directly to the Reinstablished Kingdom of King Richard, but the fact that it takes agency from the characters themselves. They just resisted to the tiranny of King John, but it was another character, that shows up at the ending of the story, to end it. Pre-90s Disney always had a problem with character agency, where the protagonists just let the story happen to them until it ends.

@@brendis16851 that's not an intrinsic problem. It would be the "flat arc" type of story, where the protagonists don't change but change the world around themselves. But that doesn't happen either. It's friggin' proto-Mufasa the guy who saves the day.
